Facebook’s New Homepage Goes Live

-New Facebook Homepage Icon-This afternoon Facebook launched the updated version of their homepage for the majority of users. If your homepage has not yet updated, you will see it change by the end of the week according to Facebook. We’ve been discussing the updated homepage design for the past week and how this will impact brands and users. Facebook said that the homepage will be streaming but as far as I can tell, you must refresh in order to view any updated feed items.

In contrast to before when you could click the streaming live feed, or click over to just the links being posted, the feed is based on a filtering system. You can filter your individual feed based on friend list categories as well as the various applications. The highlights area of the feed is extremely interesting. Highlights are created from various applications including Facebook’s standard apps (videos, photos, events, notes, etc).

One story which appeared to be absent from my own news feed was the story which says “15 of your friends just changed their profile photo”. I’m assuming that will reappear at some point in the near future. In a few minutes I’ll be hopping on a call with Facebook to discuss the new homepage and will update this post with information that I receive from them.

Has the homepage switched over for you yet? Do you like the new design or prefer the previous version?

I have sent E-mails to Tech Support, to sales, posted on their page for "Pages" everything, they've flat out ignored my Children's museum and the Community we've built using their site!

  16. Based on the information coming from Facebook, I'm wondering if the following discrepancies between what is stated/implied on the new Home page tour are yet to be rolled out, broken or something else:

    1) No "Edit Preferences" at the bottom of streams on the Home page or on the Friends page,

    2) No birthday/events list in the upper right corner of the home page, and

    3) Actions to unhide friends on the Home page (why are they hidden?) as well as showing hidden posts do not persist. In other words, those friends go back to being hidden, as do the posts.

I ask this, in part, because I do have an Updated tab on my Inbox page; Nick suggests in his next post that this is missing.

What I don’t like is that, as for Pages there is a business/commercial background, Facebook is interested on work and improve for them, whilst to get updates from Groups, we still have to check them one by one (see wall, forums, posted items, new subscribers, etc.).

Is it possible to remove items from the highlights area once they are viewed so they can be replaced with others or rotated around? Again, i cannot find setting fir these new features. Also, do you know if you can send messages to more than 20 friends at a time now? I have my friends lists at no more than 20 each, but now with the new filtering system it be great to broaden my friends with each category.

  35. The new Facebook homepage/profile page deal is a true downgrade, and quite a disappointment. No longer are there collectivised stories such as "5 of your friends changed their profile picture" or "3 of your friends wrote on so-and-so's wall". It's all very singular. Another thing which I don't like at all is that one can no longer see one's status on the homepage, unless you very recently updated it (and not always even then). And of course the fact that I am forced to use the new homepage with no "switch to old homepage" option leaves me quite disappointed – sad, almost. There are many other letdowns with the new profile/homepage, but I'll leave the rest for everyone else to experience.

    Comment by Facebook User — March 12, 2009 @ 2:51 pm

  36. I like all the changes a LOT … the only thing I HATE is that your profile picture now appears beside the posts on the Wall tab. It just clutters the wall and isn't it a given that I wrote it if it's on my page?

    Comment by Tanya Ryno — March 12, 2009 @ 7:00 pm

  37. wow, i've only had this new layout for one evening, and i'm not digging it. the news feed is not live; it has to be refreshed. the live feed has disappeared. i pretty much watch the live feed all the time – i like knowing when x friend has created event y, and when someone will be attending an event, i like seeing when someone posts a photo, comments on someone else's wall, etc. the real-time aspect and detailed-ness (forgive me) were my favourite features of the live feed. i'm having major withdrawal. now the feed just looks like twitter – which is not a compliment.

also, as someone else suggested – if there are these 'highlights' on the right side of the page, i would like to be able to 'close' them and have others rotate in. already i'm totally sick of the ones that are there and want to make them disappear.

    Comment by laura — March 12, 2009 @ 11:55 pm

  38. Indeed, a downgrade, and very frustrating. The feedback that I have sent about the new homepage and design changes:

    Fri Mar 13 10:12:29 EDT 2009

The new homepage is not at all what you described in your blog entry:

    http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=5919508713...

"We think you'll find that the new home page makes it even easier for you to create content and receive real-time updates from the people and connections you have on Facebook."

It's not at all real-time, and not at all easier. I used the Live Feed before, and it updated itself IN REAL TIME, and it included all the updates I was looking for from the people and connections I have on facebook. Whereas, the new homepage DOES NOT update in real time AT ALL (I have to keep hitting reload to see if there's anything new), and it DOES NOT show the same updates that I saw on the Live Feed. It shows A LOT LESS. So no, it's not real-time, and no, it doesn't show me anywhere near the updates I am looking for, and which I had previously, with the Live Feed.

"Real-Time Stream – The biggest part of the new home page is your improved News Feed, or the stream of content that's most relevant to you. The stream lets you know what's happening right now in your world."

Again, no, it does not. Again, it is not at all Real-Time, and it does not at all show the content that's most relevant to me. It shows me hours-old status updates and occasional photo posts. It does not show me when someone commented on a photo or video or note, when someone added a friend, when someone is attending an event, when someone is tagged in a photo or video or note, when someone becomes a fan of something, etc. It does not at all show's happening right now, it shows hours-old status updates. If I want to know what's going on now, I have to go searching in people's profile page (and then digging down into the middle of the page, because the items on the profile page wall are no longer in chronological order at the top!)

"Controlling Your Stream – When you're reading the stream to keep up with friends, you'll see everything that's happening."

Ha. Again, no, I do not. I see old content that's hours stale. I see NOWHERE near "everything that's happening". I certainly do not see the same level of content or activity that I saw in the Live Feed.

I don't know if you're just not realizing that people used the Live Feed, or if you're just ignoring the people that used the Live Feed, or if you're just not realizing what your product used to do before this new "stream".

So please, either make this new stream ACTUALLY real-time, and useful, like the Live Feed was, or just bring back the Live Feed.

But don't try and sell us on how great and "real-time" this new stream is, when it's not anywhere near as real-time, or as useful, as the former Live Feed.

    Fri Mar 13 10:19:44 EDT 2009

Why are the order of the entries on the profile wall now out of order? It's exceedingly confusing, as to when things happened, and what's happened recently.

Why are the days no longer indicated in the profile wall? Again, it makes it very hard to tell when things happened and what's new.

Why are there repeated sections called "Recent Activity", when it's not recent at all?? You can go back days into the profile wall, and STILL see sections titled "Recent Activity". That was days ago! It's not recent at all! It's exceedingly confusing.

    Fri Mar 13 10:23:00 EDT 2009

Why can't we change the size of entries on our wall anymore? The only option now seems to be "delete". Why can't we set them to single-line, small, or full anymore? That was very useful, to emphasize things we cared about and wanted to show off, and de-emphasize things we were less interested in. It let us highlight things that were important, and significantly improve the signal to noise ratio in our profile pages.

  39. Love the design, I have it since yesterday, BUT you don't get as many news as you used with the :live post: option of the older version, you do not see who makes friends with who or what groups they join, you only get updates of pics, links and status, so you really don't know what your friends are doing if they don't post something and you need to refresh to see updates :(

    Comment by Anabella Parmigiano — March 13, 2009 @ 1:16 pm

  40. I hate the new design. If I wanted to use Twitter, I would use Twitter. Facebook has definitely lost its way and is not what it used to be.

  45. little concerned with the new design :( live feed isn’t actually live, chunky everything taking up far too much space without showing much info at all, no top status message, the feed displaying stuff i’m really not interested in… i could go on. basically it feels like i’m using a fisher price toy.

how much about what we have to say actually gets taken into account?

    Comment by Caitlin — March 14, 2009 @ 3:54 pm

  46. Used new Facebook. Wanted to try the hiding of a friend by hitting the ‘X’ in the upper right hand corner of the post. Does anyone know how to un-do this action?

  47. I have the same problem Bill Smith. I also tried that hide a friend feature on new Facebook and I too do not how to get it back. Please, does anyone on this forum know how to fix this. Thank you!

  48. All I can say is I hope they are half-done with the transition, or they will revert things back to the old site, because I hate the new version. Anyone know of another decent social networking site that doesn’t get worse over time like facebook/myspace?

    Comment by Michael Sansig — March 14, 2009 @ 7:27 pm

  49. My experience with new home: absolutely blank. Broken.

From another account: regular. From another friend: blank.

No answer from fb, no issue, no solutions till now.

No notice on the web: will solve ?

    Comment by Mauro — March 15, 2009 @ 6:03 am

  50. The new version is flattening all the information: The tabs system of the od version permitted a very fast and efficient navigation through status and photos updates, whereas now we are all stuck with one way of navigating. As someone wrote a little above me, no more collectivised updated neither.
Same thing on profile: the new wall is just “flat”: I can’t publish a big story and a mini-story, I can’t editorialize my life anymore…

I’m sure facebook is going to tweak the new design within a few weeks :) I hope so…

    Comment by Thibaut Thomas — March 15, 2009 @ 6:24 am

  51. I’ve given this a few days now, and I really dislike it. The homepage has totally copied Twitter by focussing on people’s status updates rather than other interactions and stuff they’re doing, which is what we used to get. It’s like we’re looking at the old status updates stream, but without the option to view everything else anymore.

Also, I’m also getting stuff appearing in the feed from Applications that I’ve blocked, which I think is very wrong.

And what’s with the large font size? Do Facebook think we all have eye problems?!

    Comment by Gareth Harrison — March 15, 2009 @ 7:58 am

  52. In a word the new page design sucks!

Birthdays, only appear on your feed page on they day they happen. You can no longer view birthdays coming up in the next few days.

There is no longer a groups link on the main page to be able to get to your groups or fan pages quickly.

Also the feed is very singular, it no longer lumps multiple users who have performed the same action into one notification.

Many people I talk to are having a difficult time navigating the new design. It would have been better if Facebook would have allowed us to choose which design we wanted through the settings in our profile instead of forcing a design change without knowing how users would react to it. I'm afraid this may make some users not login to FB as much as they had in the past.

    Comment by Stephen delVecchio — March 15, 2009 @ 12:41 pm

  53. FB would be good if you really GOT live updates…but i am having to refresh to see them…that is NOT good….we didn’t have to refresh before. Now i can’t even see who all is becoming friends…where did that go? isn’t this is what FB is all about… making FRIENDS?

    Comment by Cena Martin — March 15, 2009 @ 2:22 pm

  54. The new home page is a disaster. It basically says that none of our actiivties are important anymore except the status updates, since that’s essentially all we get. Gone are the “so and so are friends with” and “friends were tagged”. You know, the actual social network aspect of the site. Now, it’s essentially a poor man’s Twitter. The highlight column is confusing, at best. But the worst thing is: NONE OF THIS IS A STREAM! You have to refresh over and over again to see updates, as opposed to the old live feed! Wasn’t the whole point that this be “real time”??? What a major screw up! Worse yet, status updates show up then disappear, and I can’t see them again unless I log off/on. And the vaunted “filter” function WAS ON THE OLD FB HOMEPAGE. You just had to look for it. Another terrible thing is that if these are all bugs, then FB needs to do a better job communicating with its users. I hate MYSpace, but I will say that if they are working on an issue, you get a news alert to be patient. At least you know someone is aware of the problem. Here, you send in your little feedbacks, and wonder if it goes right into a trashcan. It’s all very frustrating, and a big step backwards for Facebook.

    Comment by Harry — March 15, 2009 @ 3:48 pm

  55. Although I love the new filters the page seems very much in beta.

    1) Unhiding Friends doesn't 'stick'

    2) It's not a stream, refresh is still needed

    3) I don;t seem to get notifications of friends adding friends

    4) The applications that show for filtering seem random each time I hit the page, should I not get a full list somewhere to select my 'stickies' from?

    Comment by Steven Jones — March 16, 2009 @ 1:35 am

  56. What I don’t like is the fact that the status updates are limited in length, álá twitter. I think I’ll report it as a regression bug.

    Comment by Victor Jalencas — March 16, 2009 @ 6:10 am

  57. Ugh. I am NOT liking the new FB. You can’t see who has broken up, gotten together, changed their profile pic, been tagged in a photo, etc. I love all of those things about FB, and now they are gone! And they only show one birthday in the upper right corner, unless you hit “see more” and then it doesn’t stick. You have to hit “see more” each time. Boooo to all of the changes :(

    Comment by Jacquelynn — March 16, 2009 @ 8:39 am

  58. I love the design and ability to quickly switch between friends lists to see what everyone is doing.

But, the whole freakin point of the site is to reconnect with friends but they decided to remove any info on who is friendning who? Makes no sense at all.

    It’s way to status heavy.

    Comment by Mike — March 16, 2009 @ 1:26 pm

  82. I am getting used to the new Facebook Live Feed. The problem is my live feed will stream fairly real time, but my mate’s does not. He has to continually hit update to see new stuff. Any idea why this is? We’ve looked through all of our computer settings to see what’s different but can’t find anything. Frustrating for him! Thanks for any help.

  83. Love FB. Keeping me connected to loved ones and re-connecting me with many old friends.

Just one question? Who is the mastermind behind the poll "President Obama says he is going to have a "Holiday Tree" and not call it a Christmas Tree??? This is going around like crazy. It has already been on SNOPES. There is no word of this on the White House Website. And, I cannot find one quote or news article stating this has been announced by anyone affliated with the President/White House. I realize FB cannot be a 24/7 watchdog for false information. But, this really needs to be addressed…and, soon! There should be a clarification today. Post the news article or quote by the White House or Apologize for mis-representing the President Of the United States!!!

  88. I freakin HATE HATE HATE this new homepage it sucks like all hell! Thought i was buggin for a minute when it changed over, then realized it was fb trippin again like they did when they made the light version that pissed everyone off! stop messing with it. If ur gonna do anything make it so that u don’t have to switch back and fourth between status updates and news feeds! everything you post should just pop up for ur status!

  89. I hate the new version, I like having the frends all frends on the top.It is not very good for older people who have a hard time getting used to newer ways. I know that when my mother gets it she is going to be very frusrated. And she will be on the phone everyday asking how to do different things. Please put the older one back I HATE TE NEW ONE

  99. So hows does this work. I am having a disagreement with my bf about how the homepage gets changed. He thinks that they get changed all at the sametime. Where as obviously there are a lot of people still waiting for the new facebook to change? Which is my point. So I guess the question being How do they change facebook, all at once or do they go down a list and change it in groups.
