This morning, you may have noticed when you logged in to Facebook that it asked you to update all your likes & interests and add them to ‘pages’. Facebook is unrolling their steps to create the semantic web this morning, and that starts by creating ‘pages’ for everyone’s lists of interests and hobbies. This ties people’s interests to real information and allows people to connect with other people that like their interests in an easier way. If you haven’t seen it yet, Facebook will be unrolling it soon in your area.
You can see how this works in the image below. I’ve had CCR listed on my favorite music section for years, and when I used to click on it it would present me with a list of pages related to the artist. This was completed by automatically doing a Facebook search for “CCR” when I clicked on the link. Now, when I click on CCR, I get this page:
We can see that the new page attempts to consolidate the information about CCR into a page, which includes a list of people that “like” the page. This is really great because it makes the ‘like’ idea the same no matter where you are. Whether you head to cnn.com and click “like” on an article, or say you “like” CCR in your interests, your basic function as a Facebooker is to have a series of “likes” around the web. It’s the basic currency of connection between users and media on the web. It’s a simplified starting point for the ‘semantic web’, and I imagine we’ll see more developments as time passes.
In the meantime, enjoy connecting with people easier on Facebook. It’s really simple now to head over the CCR page, for instance, post a message, and know that it can be seen by everyone on Facebook that likes CCR. Think of it as a meetingplace for any given interest. That’s a very powerful idea. The site also includes the Wikipedia page, and indicates that the page will soon be open for editing by Facebook users, like a wiki page, with the goal of making it a complete description as edited by the Facebook community.

Wait a sec, do you mean that every fan who posts to the CCR page in your example would have the message broadcast to all the CCR fans on the page? That's very different than how fan posts to Pages operated before, and risks creating far too much noise. I don't want to have my news feed cluttered with a kabillion versions of "Teh band is AWESOME!!!!"

@Briana: Exactly! Facebook has lost its mind! If they roll out one more application to allow me to "connect with friends" and meet other people with similar interest, I'm gonna throw up! Facebook, in their zeal to bring more 3rd party developers into the fold, are forcing users to give up a big chunk of their privacy just to be a member of a page about knitting! And the part I hate the most is the fact that if one of my REAL friends joins one of these pages or 'communities', by default my info gets pulled right along with theirs! WTF! If I don't want my info shared through my friend's membership in one of these communities (correct me if I'm wrong–)I have to go into my own privacy settings and "block the application"! This is stupid and requires me to 'police' my account settings waaaaaaay too much. By default all applications should be BLOCKED. Period. If I want to share my info with–for example–CCR, I should be required to join that page or "like" that page myself! Facebook does not get it! Some of us users do not want to share our info with all 400 million Facebook users! Furthermore, more some of us users do not want to have their wall clutter by postings from a page or community that we rarely visit. The default setting for all user info and profile details should be BLOCKED to all pages, apps, and communities. If wanna share my info I should be given the option to do so–BUT, I should also be given the option not to share my info and still be able join the community! Forcing users to give up everything just to play, for example, FARMVILLE is just wrong–especially when we have to give up our list of Facebook friends, some of which do not even play Farmville!…And the really sad part about this is that (according to recent study) most Facebook users don't even bother to view or edit their privacy settings and those that do find them confusing and they don't understand the ramifications of one setting vs. another setting. Is this confusion by design? I don't know. But I do know that Facebook is given users less and less control over who can view their info. I predict someday in the not-too-distant future, there will be no privacy settings on Facebook because you will be required to share everything with every app (whether you use it or not) and every user (whether you know them or not). Your 'friends' list will be all 400million Facebook users on planet earth! If, like me, you joined Facebook to connect with your family and REAL friends, the playing field has changed radically in the last 2 weeks. You are no longer the master of your own personal data and Facebook is just the tip of the iceberg. Someday you will have to give up your 'friends' list to order a pizza! I guess George Orwell was right after all…

Another thing they're doing is completely bypassing many existing and well established groups. There was already a well maintained and active group that I joined for both my hometown and current town, but Facebook linked my info page to totally new "community" pages that they created, shafting well established groups. They're also opening up a can of brand infringement whoop ass. I belong to many fan pages of products and sports teams, but when I add those interests to my profile I of course get the new official facebook "community" pages instead. So you don't think that brands like the New York Yankees are going to care that Facebook is directing people to an unauthorized community page created by Facebook that says "New York Yankees". Wait for the brand infringlement lawsuits to come from everywhere as Facebook has just declared that they are above all copyright laws and can make official content for any brands they want.

How do I cancel Facebook hobbies and interests connection to pages (go back to the old info settings)??
Comment by Someone — April 22, 2010 @ 4:54 pm
This is so true. Since I have an interest in "Killing Zombies" I'm now automatically a part of some weird community page called Killing Zombies. This is the only part of this entire thing that makes any sense.
But the fact that it pulls status updates from all over Facebook and posts them there for the whole world to see is privacy infringement.
ANYTHING official–business/brand names, bands, movies, artists, actors/actresss/comedians, WEB SITES–should be a FAN PAGE that people join voluntarily, not a community page they "like" because they write in their profile that they like AC/DC or Dave Matthews Band.
Do you really think Alicia Keys isn't going to sue you now that I'm not a "Like" on her page but on some community page about her instead? It's employees of hers that make the status updates for that fan page, not some random fan.
Who do they think they are?

Instead of making it all one big THE SAME THING, why not put the functionality of creating the type of page when the page is created? If you say you're a business, it's an Official Business Page and you can SUBSCRIBE and hear updates and get special deals because you joined that page. If you say you're a website, author, actor/actress, movie, ANYTHING entertainment related, it should be a fan page, plain and simple. If it's an actual interest, as I stated before like Killing Zombies, then the community LIKE pages are totally fine. But for everything else it just MAKES NO SENSE and makes you guys look like you think you own everything.

I wouldn't have a problem with the linking/change if it were like wikipedia (text doesn't change, only the language can be clicked on to get to other pages). The problem is that it erased lots of information, and presented it in a funky way. At least give the option as to how we want to present our information. There wasn't an opt out, or any way to get it back to normal. That stinks.

People who have had this “Happen” to them….and that’s exactly how it occurred…no notice was given ahead of time, no telling users they would lose their often times beloved profile information…it simply happened one day…well, those folks are furious. First because they were sort of ambushed by the change and then because they lost info and then because of the change itself. It borders on ridiculous. Linking someone’s personal info, written in their own hand, their own style and wanting to group it all together in the supposed interest of Community. Which, of course, isn’t the case. It’s got to be in an effort to monetize Facebook. That goal is fine – great even. Go ahead make money FB…you should. But they has a customer base and that should be honored as well. A rollout should be marketed…surveyed first, perhaps, but marketed. And forcing people’s private info into Public? Not great. Plus, these tidbits of info users are sharing don’t fit neatly into a box…or, in this case, a page. One friend’s music entry of “everything” turned into a free for all on a newly minted (because one didn’t exist) Everything Community Page…nothing, of course, to do with music. Another friend’s favorite band, Rapture, got linked to a Biblical page about The Rapture…yes, THAT one. See? Ridiculous.
Here are two links that have been circulating on FB and getting some traction:
1) A link to a form to send feedback directly to FB. They created this form but then made it very difficult for folks to find … even people commenting on discussion boards in the Help Center where the form is embedded can’t find it, so folks are sharing the form:
http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=profile_connections_feedback
2) A Community Page giving the big Thumbs Down to the new format:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/We-hate-the-new-profile-pageplease-change-it-back/115583841796328?ref=ts
If you read the posts at that link and the comments following FB’s blog article about the change (in spite of all the thumbs up on the article…(exactly whose thumbs are those anyway?!) at the following link you’ll see how facebook users are adjusting to this unexpected change: http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=382978412130

Facebook seems to like violating peoples privacy for the sake of advertising … eventually, they will piss people off enough, like myspace, to go elsewhere to keep in touch with thier friends and family …. one more violation of MY privacy, and IM GONE!!

I, and most of my friends, have not gotten this new change yet…. are they still rolling it out or what?
Comment by Allyson — April 26, 2010 @ 8:54 pm
YOU RUINED MY PROFILE! I'm thinking of just going back to Myspace or something because at least there, I can say what I want, where I want. I don't need it connected to some community page! I liked how my profile was. its horrible. this is ruining facebook.thanks alot for ruining a great site. well.. what used to be a great site.

This is terrible. They MUST include an opt-out button. Otherwise my choices are Link or Lose My Information. You are FORCING me to link to Facebook-created pages and threatening me with deleting MY information if I don't? What the hell?!
Geez, Facebook. Making enemies fast.

My favourite part was where they found other books that had similar titles to books I had listed and linked to the wrong book.

No wonder why I can't view the likes and interest — not yet available?

I agree! I don't want all my likes and interests added to my Friends list!!!!! I had to take my L&I off to get rid of the whole mess.
