One of the more useful features of Facebook is a simple tool that users can use to suggest pages to their friends. As of the past few days the feature stopped working for administrators and is no longer visible to fans of the page.
The most likely reason for this change was that page administrators were typically the only people likely to use the tool. This also prevents page administrators from encouraging fans to share their page with others.
While the tool is currently broken for admins, I have a feeling it will be resolved in the near future. There’s also a chance that Facebook will come up with alternative solutions for easily sharing your favorite pages. Ultimately I’m not sure how large of an impact this will have on page growth but it’s definitely something that admins won’t be happy about.
Did you ever use the “Suggest To Friends” feature when you visited another page? How about for Pages you administer yourself?
Update
One thing that may not have been clear: admins can still access the feature, however fans of a page cannot.

Facebook acknowledged that the Suggest to Friends button wasn't functioning properly and said it would be fixed shortly. (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=192555600756145&set=a.134905459854493.22542.134897749855264&comments)
I would guess the removal of the button is either part of the process of fixing the bug, or potentially a test. I still see the Suggest to Friends button on my fan pages (though it doesn't work at the moment).

Definitely removes a very useful tool for those managing a brand/celebrity fan page. Disappointing.
Comment by @dave_link — January 21, 2011 @ 6:48 pm
I used it all the time. My mission is to bring people together and removing this feature is a big disappointment.
Comment by Joanne — January 21, 2011 @ 6:49 pm
at least once/month I'd suggest my page to my "Friends". I do hope they replace or reinstate that feature!
Comment by Tim Ryan — January 21, 2011 @ 6:49 pm
I used it now and again, but found that the notification itself would generally be lost amid lots of clutter (so I'd often just cut and paste a link to the page into a mail message, or post it on the person's wall).

It is integral to what I do on face book regarding networking law enforcement agencies together and not only do I use the one on the fan page I run to suggest to any new friends to my personal list but I use it on all the LE department pages to suggest their pages… definitely a must have to continue doing what we are doing in Law Enforcement
Comment by Nessie — January 21, 2011 @ 7:02 pm
I use it a lot .. both for pages I like and for pages I am Admin on ….. not cool having it interoperable!!!!
Please fix soon!!!!!!!
Comment by Jeanne — January 21, 2011 @ 7:09 pm
I use this feature all the time anytime I'm on a page that I think some of my friends might like, plus to suggest my own page to new friends. So many of my friends have become fans of pages I thought were interesting and thanked me for suggesting it to them. Isn't this how networking is supposed to work?
Comment by Cindy — January 21, 2011 @ 7:11 pm
Ditto to many of the above, I use this feature all the time both as an Admin and a consumer when I come across pages that I know would be useful or relevant to friends/family. Very disappointing, my expectation is that this functionality will come back ten-fold with more robust features.

Comment by francis — January 22, 2011 @ 7:38 am
I'm a page admin, and I used the suggest tool quite often! What will I do without it?
Comment by Liz — January 22, 2011 @ 8:11 am
FB is in need to sell his ADS so he stop people grow his pages alone.
This can be something that STOP a lot of investors to use the platform itself.
After seen the new Page version where u see only numbers and noothing more than that i think this is part of the game.
But in the new version i remember that the button to share the page was there.
Comment by Alexander — January 22, 2011 @ 9:13 am
I have 3 business pages and I used this feature quite often. It would have been more professional if FB would have given us a "heads up" concerning this change and what we could expect in exchange. The lack of communication is also quite unprofessional.
Comment by Aleeah — January 22, 2011 @ 12:07 pm
My fans use it all the time too… How ridiculous is this???
Comment by Bette — January 22, 2011 @ 1:28 pm
This is not good news to me. I currently "Like" maybe 160 pages, but for some reason facebook hasn't allowed me to "Like" pages on my own for at least 6 months now. I found a way around it in asking friends on the page to suggest the page to me, so I can like from my Page Suggestions area.
And to add to this… I just started a new page and not only can I not "Like" it, but now, I can't even get around it as no one can suggest it to me…. my own page!
This is not my favorite facebook change here.
Comment by Krystal Rushing — January 22, 2011 @ 5:11 pm

Comment by quietBUZZ — January 24, 2011 @ 1:00 am
Just a way for facebook to make more money because now you would have to get an ad to reach people. This is ridiculous though come on facebook dont act like myspace now.

maybe because there are facebook adds and fb need more money?

Comment by Phil — January 24, 2011 @ 9:41 am
I use it regularly as an Admin and suggest to my friends that they use it as well. It is a great tool and should be reinstated.
Comment by Del — January 24, 2011 @ 12:30 pm
I used this all the time to let people know about new businesses they might actually be interested in. It was easy enough to ignore suggestions if you didn't want to subscribe to the suggested material.

Will FB return "Suggest Page To Friends" Feature for members who don't own the FB page?
I want to use it to promote FB pages which I created (I have multi FB accounts) to my friends on FB.
Comment by Iman — January 24, 2011 @ 12:53 pm
I agree……I think they should put it back on. . I have been able to hook up with people that I haven't seen in like 15 years and would not have been able to find them without the help of suggest a friend.
Comment by Jessica — January 24, 2011 @ 1:45 pm
I have both used 'suggest' on other pages, as well as my own.
This doesn't seem like a prime move to maximize traffic to FB, or the individual pages.
Comment by ElizaM — January 24, 2011 @ 4:35 pm
As an admin I only used it when I 1st made the page, mostly it's a pages fans that utilize it to tell their friends about the great pages they find (spread the word). So leaving it for admins only is really pointless.
Just my 2 cents.
Comment by Mary — January 24, 2011 @ 11:34 pm
This is either a glitch or another idiotic move by Facebook. I'm really hoping it's a glitch, but it does seem to be yet another way Facebook is trying to force people to buy their advertising to advertise, Facebook – What a sham.
I hope if they did this on purpose that their traffic will take a hit. The place is already feeling more and more like Myspace each day – hopefully the true Facebook killer will come around…and SOON.
Comment by JIDF — January 25, 2011 @ 7:00 am
the option still works on my page… http://www.facebook.com/ogsfun
Comment by ogs — January 25, 2011 @ 7:50 am
Agreed! This was a very beneficial feature to many pages! I should be allowed to suggest a page I like to friends that I think would enjoy it, too. Not to mention, from a business standpoint this could be a real issue in social media optimization and marketing, which has become integral to most businesses. BRING IT BACK!

yes, i used it a lot to share pages I either Liked or thought others would want to Like. seems like FB dropped the social ball on this feature…isn't FB all about sharing?
I also am a page admin for multiple pages and I can still "Suggest to Friends" for those pages.
Comment by Jeff T — January 26, 2011 @ 12:02 am

Comment by bojandjordjevic — January 26, 2011 @ 4:09 am

Comment by Jimbo — January 26, 2011 @ 3:27 pm
I would really like to see this feature be reinstated for everyone! It is a valuable part of the social networking world. C'mon Facebook! All these facebook friends are suggesting very substantially.
Comment by becky — January 26, 2011 @ 6:30 pm
If I am not mistaken, those that have a business page use this to promote and advertise their business page, I know that I do. This advertisement crosses state lines, so it becomes interstate commerce. To remove the button without the the consent of the business owner could be construed as obstruction of interstate commerce which would be a federal violation. Maybe the ACLU could weigh in on this? Only if this removal is a permanent one.
Comment by Greig — January 26, 2011 @ 7:22 pm
hello, it works on every page, if you are admin but: NOBODY OF YOUR FANS can suggest YOUR Site to his friends. THAT´S THE PROBLEM You see the butto SUGGEST TO FRIEND only when you are ADMIN.

Please bring back the SHARE BUTTON…omg I use it all the time to suggest to friends on pages of artists & companys I like as well for the group I am an Admin on. In the meantime FB puts a limit on how many friends I can send a private email SUGGESTING any given page; extremely lethargic process to say the least. Please hurrys and FIX the Share Button!

So I just started a page today for a dog rescue. From my admin page it allowed me to suggest the page to friends, is it going to work and how long does the suggestion take to get to them? I heard it could take up to 24 hrs
Comment by Shocky — February 2, 2011 @ 4:38 pm
Facebook really needs to start looking after Businesses and Companies. Ultimately, they pay for Facebook via Advertising. People complain about spam, but this is so easy to prevent: don't like a page if you don't want to get their feed. simple.
Comment by Katrina — February 2, 2011 @ 10:10 pm
Yes admins can access it but it does not work. It will say it send the invites but it does not actually succeed.
Comment by Oliver — February 3, 2011 @ 5:13 am
This really takes away from the whole Facebook experience, especially since Facebook has a limit to how many likes you can like. Friends would suggest pages so I could continue to like pages. I've taken pages off and still cannot like pages.

I am an Admin, and sent invitations to friends. No 'gray-out' emerged on profiles of friends who were (allegedly) invited. But the invitations did not fly, although Facebook 'claims' that they were sent. I wish Facebook's 'Tech Support' – if such a department actually exists – would fix the problem.'

Comment by Susan — February 7, 2011 @ 2:45 am
in fact… admins still see the link but it doesn't work for the moment.
i think it would be a really bad idea to skip the "suggest to…"-option. The page growth will suffer and a lot of companies will think about entering facebook and spend their money…
a really bad decision…
Comment by Mario Jung — February 7, 2011 @ 3:36 am
Very pissed off at facebook for disabling this feature. I worked endless hours creating a great page, and now this. Now I know why some friends call it EVIL FACEBOOK
Comment by joe — February 7, 2011 @ 9:17 pm
Ridiculous! Looks like they have eliminated it it. I did a Facebook Help Center search for "suggest to friends" and found this entry, indicates feature is only available for admins:
Facebook Pages › Facebook Pages: Creating, administering and editing your Page
How can people suggest my Page to their friends?
All Page admins have the option to suggest their Page to friends by selecting the "Suggest to Friends" link in the upper left side of the Page. Non-admins do not have this option, and are not able to view this link. However, they can share a Page with friends by selecting the "Share" link in the bottom left side of the Page. They can then choose to share it via a post on their profile, which may appear in their friends' News Feeds, or with specific friends via a message.
Comment by @Dadooz — February 8, 2011 @ 9:28 am
Yep, no more suggest to friends. Which sucks. Our page fans are mainly teenagers, who are REALLY fickle anyway. Trying to get them to scroll all the way down to the left hand side, hit share, is not going to be easy. And we have spent thousands on our facebook ads already….

Comment by Patrick McNamara — February 9, 2011 @ 6:25 am
Actually it doesn't. Or at least it only works in a very limited way. I (the administrator) can suggest my page to … drum roll please… the friends of that page.
Comment by Dominika — February 9, 2011 @ 3:28 pm
I think the aim is to get you to pay them for ads.
I used the feature as an admin but instead of sending out messages to recipients, Facebook now generates an ad on the right hand column of their page (which people have long been ignoring). I ‘suggested’ my page to up to 200 friends and after 12 hours not one ‘like’ had been gotten from them. I started getting 'likes' only after reactivating one of my ads.
I can’t blame them for wanting more money though.

Comment by Abby — February 16, 2011 @ 7:17 pm
Hmmm…not sure many people are aware that they actually IMPROVED this by creating the "share" link to utilize better. Now you click share in 2 ways: logged in AS your biz page allows you to post in the home feed of your fans which can then easily be shared with others. Your biz can actually "self promote" this way. You also have the choice to "share" your page to your friends/family as your regular personal profile as well. So depending on your audience, you can share your page one of two ways or both. You do realize the "suggest to friends" feature wasnt viral, right? You suggest, and it usually ended at the person you suggested to. And typically it was the same people over and over anyway. Now with "share" it is actually easier for your fans to now share it again easily in THEIR home feed. If anyone doesnt get it, feel free to email me. My company specializes in SMM. The new feature has increased my clients on Facebook's presence, and we manage 60+ fanpages. As well, "tell your fans" in the "marketing" section of your page includes a .csv file upload where you can use your email database to send invites out to people in this database FROM your company. It used to be from your personal profile. Good changes, people. You just need to know how to use them
Now, the wall not in chronological order is the HORRIBLE change that I heard will be fixed! That's the change you should be complaining about! lol…See our Facebook page to see feedback from the seminars we give about using Facebook for marketing and to stay up to date on how to use your FB page for your marketing initiatives, as well as all of social media.

Comment by Julie — March 1, 2011 @ 7:14 pm
The update at the end says: One thing that may not have been clear: admins can still access the feature, however fans of a page cannot.
That's not true. When I first updated my page profile to the 'new look', I found they had moved it from the left side to the upper right, under ACCOUNT. A day later, it disappeared from there. I never even knew it was ever available to fans as I am the administrator. What good is a page if you can't encourage friends to become "fans" – or as they changed it "likes". I'd like to be able to suggest to non-friends also – such as clients who are on FB but aren't necessarily friends.

I used this all the time! Particularly with pages that supported a cause! I'm super bummed about this change
Comment by Luna — March 2, 2011 @ 12:16 pm
I am going crazy trying to do the same. The "suggest a page" feature comes and goes from my admin area of our page. When it is there is does not work, now I can't find it again. FB seems to not care crap about their users. Either have the feature or don't. But it seems somewhat stupid to have a social networking site that does not network socially . . . not a good way to create brand loyalty. Keep this up FB and 2 years from now people will have moved on to the next big thing.

It seems this has been an issue since last quarter of 2010, not sure what would take so long, makes things very difficult.
Comment by robliano — March 4, 2011 @ 2:03 pm
we've found that it works for the creator of the page, but whoever came in after to admin does not get access to it.
Comment by nikolasa — March 4, 2011 @ 8:03 pm
I read that Facebook disabled the "suggest to friends" feature because they want admins to advertise their pages, rather than "suggesting" them. There's no other reason that they would take this long to fix a simple issue. It used to be that Facebook worked fairly well, these days I seem to reporting bugs every other day. I spent $10K a year on advertising with them and my page was unusable for almost a month recently and they wouldn't respond to my bug reports. For a company that is worth billions with massive teams of engineers, it doesn't make sense that they have this many problems. I keep hoping Facebook goes the way of MySpace and a new social networking website comes along that is more responsive to it's users needs.
Comment by Sara — March 6, 2011 @ 11:10 am
Not going to be forced and pay Facebook thousands of dollars just to promote to strangers, I very much enjoy keeping in touch with true fans, and with the people that have been in interest for years and build up fanbase from there. I'm sure every band on the planet feels the same way.

Does anyone know the status of this? I was able to open up the "Suggest to Friends" and I was able to send the request but don't know if it works or not. After I sent the request to numerous freinds that were highlighted, it did unhighlight them after I sent. However, does it work? Any updates on this would be most helpful. Thank you!

I just discovered that it was missing today when I went to suggest a page to my friends. It makes it really inconvenient and flat out difficult to share a page with my friends, I would send a message to my friends but am only allowed 20 people when I hit "share", add to that I don't know who has already been invited to "like" the page already. WHY!?!?

Comment by Nico — March 26, 2011 @ 9:16 am
Well Facebook has become smart and changed the "suggest to friends" feature. Now you can't suggest ur page to your friends through an email notification. Now your suggestions will be part of "recommended pages" on your friend's profile on the right side bar, similar to how you see a paid Fb ad.
Very disappointing for me and for many other FB page administrators. Previously my fan conversion from Invites was around 15 percent. So i just had to keep sending more and more invites to get more fans. But I can do it anymore.
I think Fb has made this change because:
1. They want people to pay for their ads (now that invites feature is no more like what it was, you have no option but to do ad campaigns on Fb to increase fans).
2. Many administrators (and social media agencies) had developed a system of creating fake profiles just to send out invites for pages. For example, going by my 15% conversion theory, all you had to do to get 100,000 fans was to send out 1.5 million invites. Now considering I have 4500 friends for each fake profile (i can easily get 5000 friends for a profile in 2 months) you just need to have around 350 fake profiles to send out more than 1.5 million invites. Trust me there are agencies with more than 1000 fake profiles (mostly women). Now facebook was losing out on ad money because ppl had developed a system of sending invites.
3. I am happy that people who had developed their business model based on the above system are going to bite the dust now, and there will be less spamming. I've been bombarded with FB invites from fake profiles (i know when i see one). But i am also dissapointed cause i can't do the same myself (in my own small way) now. Nobody wants to admit it but we all did it, in a small or big way.
Now that the system has changed, anybody has has an idea of how to generate fans easily? I know all the "creative ways" so please don't trouble yourself pointing those out to me. If you have something new and exciting way, pls mail me at skpsmart@gmail.com

My gut feeling is the removal of the "suggest to friends" features is simply about forcing admins to pay for advertising, since a simple suggestion for a "like" is now no longer an easy thing to push along based on goodwill alone… It's clever, but talk about "monetisation" of a cornered, almost ubiquitous social hub. It is pretty disappointing….

The problem being is that as with all things online, facebook is attempting to ensure that people stay on facebook for as long as possible – so having the ability to share links and perhaps leave their site is counter productive. The launch of Google Plus will perhaps shake things up a bit as facebook now has a 'big boy' contender to fight it out with and they will have to both attempt to please their users in order to keep them on their site and interested. If I'm on a site that doesn't allow me to drop links, then you can bet that I'll be moving over to a competitor that does!
