Facebook Group Calling For Obama’s Death Reaches 1 Million Users

Obama Hate Group IconYou’d think Facebook would be more proactive in monitoring their groups, however a new group which is calling for Obama’s death has surpassed 1 million users. Another group which calls on Facebook to delete the group, is also rapidly approaching 1 million users. While Facebook supports freedom of speech, calling on the death of an individual (let alone the President) definitely crosses the line. The group also happens to be filled with racist and generally hateful comment.

Facebook has a track record of letting questionable groups rise in number, however we believe that allowing this group to continue to grow is an oversight on Facebook’s part. The group is called, “DEAR LORD, THIS YEAR YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTOR, PATRICK SWAYZIE. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTRESS, FARAH FAWCETT. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE SINGER, MICHAEL JACKSON. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, MY FAVORITE PRESIDENT IS BARACK OBAMA. AMEN” (and can be found here).

It’s as though the members of the group are reposting all the anti-Obama campaign material, much of which was completely false. Between pictures of an economic jet being piloted into a volcanic ash cloud (which supposedly represents Obama) and cartoons associating Obama to Hitler, the group has definitely violated Facebook’s terms of service as far as I’m concerned. Look for the group to be deleted by the end of day. Where do you think the line should be drawn when it comes to negative groups on Facebook?

  1. The problem seems to be that reporting content, whilst a great feature, seems to end up nowhere.

You can't tell me this hasn't been reported hundred, if not thousands of times.

Nick, I'm sure a while back you ran a story on people being able to apply to help moderate such reports, it was linking to a facebook application form. Try as I might, and google as I might, I now can't find a trace of this. Was it all in my head?

  3. The crazy thing is, when the founders wrote that annoying freedom of speech thing, they meant you were free to say whatever you like. Even if certain people don't like what someone is saying.

  4. Maybe if all the members of this group thought they would be under closer scrutiny by the MIB, they wouldn't feel so free to spread their hate. Just my opinion.

  5. If they delete the negative groups about Oboma, they'd better delete the negative groups related to Bush, Regan, etc. If they delete this one and not ones like, "BUSH IS STUPID," it just proves the socialistic nature of Obmama's supporters… and they wouldn't want to do that now, do they?

And also, why should they delete it? NO ONE forces you to join a group. If you get an invite to the group, how is it any different than when a friend, coworker, or neighbor says, "Man, I hate Obama. We should get him out of office one way or another." This may or may not influence you, but you ultimately decide whether or not to support such an issue. The hypocrisy is amazing. CNN, a popular news service (not a social networking group) posted slanderous things about Bush during his presidency. But you know what? They're allowed to do that. Ever heard of free speech?

As far as I'm concerned, if someone can't understand the basics of free speech (which is patriotism), they shouldn't even be living in America.

  6. That all-capped hate message spread like wildfire on the same day they changed the "like" functionality. All my hater friends clicked "like" not realizing that they were not just agreeing, but also joining, and posting that group to their profiles.

I have also reported it to FB. There are plenty of other Obama hating groups they can join. The death wish crosses the line.

  8. This group is a parody of the group of New Jersey teachers calling for (Republican) Governor Chris Christie's death. The lines are the exact same, but replaced "Chris Christie" and "Governor" with "Barack Obama" and "President." So was that alright, or are they both wrong?

    Comment by Vake — April 28, 2010 @ 5:43 am

  9. Barbara and Nancy — this isn't about freedom of speech. It's about this group violating Facebook's terms of service. FB has been pretty explicit about what they do and don't allow, and this group has crossed the line in every way possible. They are free to say whatever racist, false, hateful things they like, but not on Facebook.

    Comment by Shelley — April 28, 2010 @ 5:54 am

  10. Facebook is not part of the US Government, so Freedom of Speech arguments are irrelevant. FB can do whatever they like with regard to what people express on the platform.

Clearly the Dear Lord… page violates the FB ToS, and on that basis ought to be removed. The problem is that there is no consistent application of the ToS, so that it appears arbitrary when some things are removed but other things remain.

Personally, I don't care if this particular page remains or is removed. If people want to advertise their own foolishness by joining or commenting on such a page, go ahead. If they want that freedom then they can accept my freedom to hold them in disdain and contempt.

    Comment by Stephen Moore — April 28, 2010 @ 5:58 am

  11. people are so dumb. the first amendment (freedom of speech) doesn't have anything to do with what facebook allows people to post on their web site. it only means that congress can not pass a law to suppress political speech.

    Comment by Phillip Jefferies — April 28, 2010 @ 6:20 am

  12. Not saying it doesn't violate the ToS or that it shouldn't be deleted. Not saying that it isn't irresponsible or that people shouldn't be held accountable for their free speech. I have no idea who came up with this worthless, non-constructive, lame attempt at humor.

I AM sayin' that it isn't confined to one side:

    http://hotair.com/archives/2010/04/09/a-threat-ag...

I also saw two of my conservative friends, truly awesome people, join this irresponsibly-named Facebook group. I know for a FACT that they don't wish for Obama's death, and really think that this is simply humorous, as I'm sure a majority of the 1,000,000 members do. I just happen to disagree…maybe Facebook will too.

  13. I'm not part of that group but I think you're blowing it all out of proportion. First and most importantly, IT'S A JOKE, PEOPLE! If it weren't a joke the name of the group would just be "I hope Obama dies", but no, the name of the group is a joke to be funny (even if some people who joined it do wish for that). Secondly, it doesn't call for anybody to actually kill the president so your insinuation that that any law was broken or that national security was jeopardized is ridiculously overblown. It may be mean, but there's nothing illegal about wishing for anybody to die (of non-violent means).

    Comment by Facebook User — April 28, 2010 @ 6:46 am

  14. While I didn't join the group, I laughed when I read the group name. It was a joke. It was in poor taste.

While I agree that sarcasm dictates that it's hoping for death of Obama, if read word for word it actually states that these people support Obama. If you wanted to, you could read it to mean that the person praying is sad about these deaths, and that they are asking God to look out for their favorite president. (Flame on, I know it's a stretch)

I'd understand the call for removal of a page entitled "kill Obama now" or "Assassinate Obama" but this one is disguised as sarcasm and that tells me it was a joke. In poor taste yes, but a joke none-the-less.

As for freedom of speech, Facebook doesn't guarantee that to anyone. You are free to setup your own social network at anytime and post any content you want.

  19. Deliberately misleading "headlines" such as the one beginning this article…

"Report: Facebook Is Top Searched Term In The U.S. »

Facebook Group Calling For Obama’s Death Reaches 1 Million Users"

    …should be outlawed.

While I don't subscribe to the sentiments of that group, I don't see them "calling for" anyone's death.

It's a tongue-in-cheek public prayer group that perhaps could be classified as satire. At the very least it's a safe avenue for the people to vent and really, they al probably are aware that the FBI, etc., is reading along with them. Do we truly want them starting mass-hysteria events at local venues that result in injury and death?

Is THAT what Allfacebook.com is calling for in this oblique manner that might just absolve them of journalistic responsibility?

    It didn't work.

It's really too bad that classic brain-washing, big brotherists can't stand to see that someone opposing their "opinion" on what should be, especially when it it voiced on a site such as this one who makes a great deal of money in a country known for free speech.

Can it be possible that the principals at Allfacebook.com really, truly want all Facebook users with a differing opinion from theirs to be shut up?

What about your advertisers, web host, bandwidth support, technical support, etc.? Are you CERTAIN that they ALL agree with you?

Would you rather have the political circumstances where AllFacebook.com effectively became gagged when the winds change in D.C.?

That's what you're asking for by calling for Facebook to gag these people. When the political climate changes you would have given the opposition fuel to shut YOU down if this were to become a reality.

If you don't think this is a danger, if you don't think that anyone will remember, well, here's one person. Can you be so sure that others won't?

What's next on your Social Media target, trying to get Twitter to renounce the accounts of those who tweet opposite to YOUR opinion?

  20. The difference between anti-Bush and other anti-Obama groups is that this one calls for a United States president to be killed. This is wrong (and illegal) whether it's Bush, Clinton or whoever. If you post a blog that says you want the president dead, you will be facing questions at the least from the government. This is the same thing, and all of those million people should be at the least shamed into understanding how to respect a president, and at the most investigated as to their seriousness. No matter how much people hated Bush, there was NEVER this level of disrespect to him. There were jokes about his intelligence – as there were jokes about Clinton's philandering – but no one shouted at him from the Congress, and no one prayed for him to die. Remember the Dixie Chicks? All the singer said was that she was embarrassed to be from Texas because she was against the war in Iraq, and the group went from playing the Super Bowl to complete isolation and death threats. So please don't even compare this to Bush.

We who believe in Our America as it has been before this current regime lied and bought their way into power, still believe in fighting, if nothing else, but with our words and votes,we will continue to defend our country peacefully, but with determination to protect it from the dangers from outside our country , as well as the dangers we have Within, trying to Destroy our America. Like obama said that we should THANK him for raising our taxes ( 1 of MANY promises he broke: wouldn't raise our taxes–LOL), YOU should Thank our Founding Fathers for your right to free speech !

    Comment by jeanne — April 29, 2010 @ 8:16 am

  22. First off, the constitutional right to free speech is only a right insofar as it doesn't engender threatening acts. This is why the government is "allowed" to use violent measures against riots – when protestors begin chanting slogans that seem threatening, the police are allowed to respond. Thus, referencing the Freedom of Speech Right is ungrounded in this respect. The group, implies – notice how i did not say 'calls for' – the desire to have Obama die. It is not a call to arms, no. But it is a group of right-wing Americans who are endorsing hatred and death upon someone, which ultimately has the potential to engender violence and manifest itself in violent actions. This is exactly what happened with Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma City Bombing. He was a fringe member of such groups – right wing extremist groups that preached hatred towards the government and our president – and then he took matters into his own hands after swallowing all of the filth that his comrades preached.

While groups may have called Bush stupid, made fun of his inability to speak and construct intelligent sentences, and the like, there were never groups that said that wished he were dead. .

Are you people who support this group Christians, Jews, Muslims – part of any religion at all??? Because if you are, hatred is a sin in all of them.

And it is not about opposing opinions, and leftist/socialist/progressives' inability to hear opposing opinions. I am tired of hearing that. Because all this group does in terms of rational discourse is promote generalizations that are ungrounded and unable to be supported with documents. The branding of him as a socialist and a muslim are simply paranoid. . And, while discussing that, what if he were a muslim? What matter would that make? Are muslims not allowed in our country? Does muslim=evil? Interesting logic I must say. Also, opposing opinions are good – they are what a democracy is built on. But that is rational discourse. Not paranoid, hate-mongering nonsense. Is it any wonder that the majority of intellectuals in this country are democrats/liberals/leftists/progressives??? That is, why is it that the people who read the most, the people who study the most, who understand the most history and political theory, philosophy and social theory are those who side with "socialist" "muslim" "bigots" like Obama? Just a question.

What we need in this country is rational, reasonable dialogue. Not the promotion of hatred within our own society. If people want to express dislike for our president, that is fine. In fact, I encourage it. The moment we cannot find something wrong with the government is the moment when something is wrong with ourselves. But there is a constructive way to do it and a destructive way to do it.

TO THE CREATORS OF FACEBOOK. THIS IS NOT A MATTER OF FREE SPEECH. IT IS NOT A MATTER OF EXPRESSING OPPOSING OPINIONS. IF ANYONE WANTS TO HAVE A RATIONAL DIALOGUE ABOUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR GOVERNMENT, EMAIL ME; IF NOT, THEN STOP PROMOTING SUCH HATEFUL, COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE MEASURES SUCH AS THIS FACEBOOK GROUP. PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY FREEDOM THIS AND FREEDOM THAT ARE THE BASIS OF OUR COUNTRY… I SAY THIS: THOMAS PAINE'S RIGHTS OF MAN ENCOURAGED THE WRITERS OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE TO WRITE IT. IN HIS PAMPHLET, HE DISCUSSES THE UNIVERSAL TOOL OF REASON AS THE GUIDING LIGHT IN THE NEW ERA OF GOVERNMENT. REASON PEOPLE. REASON IS THE FOUNDATION OF THIS NATION.

    Comment by Vato — April 29, 2010 @ 9:07 am

  24. This is great for Secret Service. They now have a list of people who they should keep far far away from our president.

The reason all those I hate Bush groups were not taken down was: Nobody called on George Bush's death or assassination. If there is a group called, Bush should die, then yes, lets take it down too.

Also, joining anti-war groups during the bush administration meant that people could be monitored by the government, so now the government can tap the tea party's phone calls and e-mails. At the RNC in 04, thousands of people were arrested for protesting the event, even though they were acting within the law. So bring out the plastic cuffs for the next tea party rally, and let them enjoy the fun of being the underdogs.

    Comment by MLE — April 29, 2010 @ 10:33 am

  26. There is a big difference between voicing your opinion, and calling for someone's death, particularly the President's. In no way, shape or form does this free speech elevate our political discourse. On the contrary, it hinders us from a serious and thoughtful debate about the issues at stake.

For future refrence I'll refer those to this law:

    Title 18, Section 871

    (a) Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

    (b) The terms "President-elect" and "Vice President-elect" as used in this section shall mean such persons as are the apparent successful candidates for the offices of President and Vice President, respectively, as ascertained from the results of the general elections held to determine the electors of President and Vice President in accordance with title 3, United States Code, sections 1 and 2. The phrase "other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President" as used in this section shall mean the person next in the order of succession to act as President in accordance with title 3, United States Code, sections 19 and 20.

    Comment by Stu — April 29, 2010 @ 10:33 am

  27. @Stu: I feel like the law that you posted would be repealed as unconstitutional as it violates the First Amendment's gaureentee of the Freedom of Speech. The United States Congress has a history of passing laws that deal with prohibiting anti-government ideas being sent through the mail and in all cases they have been overturned.

Now this is not to say that I don't believe that it is wrong to wish for anyone's death. It is a sad sad commentary on the state of American Politics and on the American Public if there is a large number of people who wish the President were dead. However, this does not mean that they do not have the right to express their opinion that they believe the President should be dead. The thing with the Freedom of Speech is that it holds no matter what(except in certain situations during which it causes a "clear and present danger"(this has been revised as time has gone on)); however, wishing for someone's death does not constitute a danger(unless you have a legitimate reason to believe that they will act upon their belief). I do think that if the Facebook terms of service forbid the creation of a group such as this one, then Facebook has an obligation to delete. Facebook, as it is not part of the US Government, does not have to give its users "Freedom Of Speech", but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't.

Because honestly, people… not liking something or someone who may (or may not be) of a different nationality does not make you a racist. Hating someone solely because of their races does.
