Facebook Launches Global Relief Page In Response To Haiti Disaster

-Global Relief Icon-With the ongoing news coverage of the disaster in Haiti, Facebook has developed a “Global Relief” page, as a way to educate users about what they can do to help out those affected by global disasters. Randi Zuckerberg, Adam Conner, Andrew Noyes, and others at Facebook have been working on building the page over the past few hours. As we covered earlier, news about Haiti has been spreading around Facebook and hasn’t appeared to slow down since the disaster first occurred yesterday.

There are now numerous places on Facebook that are making suggestions about where to donate money. Wyclef Jean’s foundation “Yele Haiti” is encouraging users to donate money via text message. According to one article posted on the Global Relief page, over $1.2 million in donations have been contributed for Haitit via the American Red Cross. On Causes, over $24,000 has been donated to Oxfam America via the “Help Earthquake Survivors in Haiti” cause.

For the time being, the Global Relief Page is focused on spreading information about efforts to respond to Haiti, however the Page will be used for future global disasters. It’s unfortunate that the Haiti disaster occurred, however as information unfolds over the coming days an weeks, this new Page should serve as a way to keep people up today on new efforts to contribute support.

While Facebook has yet to post any promotion of the Page (and they may not), the Page should easily be able to attract thousands of fans over the coming days. You can learn more via the new “Global Relief on Facebook” Page.
