Facebook Gets Tough On Fake Pages

I’ve had two people contact me and say that their brand Pages have been eliminated by Facebook. My friend AJ Vaynerchuk had his Halo 3 page removed. He was then sent two alerts as posted below. Peter Corbett, an occasional contributor to this blog, has his Nintendo Wii group deleted. I had previously questioned what Facebook’s policy was for ensuring that Page owners were brand managers. Whatever their policy is, they have figured out which ones are fake.

If you have created a fake Page for the purpose of gaming the system you may want to delete it to avoid having your account suspended. I had spoken with a number of individuals who had created fake brand pages to try an see how large of a fan base they could build. Gaming the system can be used for spamming users. There are still other ways to spam users on Facebook but this post will not be a tutorial on how to spam Facebook users.

Have you created any fake brand pages? What do you plan on doing with them if you have? Also, if you have your own brand’s Facebook pages, have they been successful?

  1. Brave New Films just got our satirical FOX News Porn page banned. It's not justified at all. We even tagged it as 18+, which they require for "mature and risque" content according to their TOS, even though all the footage aired on the FOX News Channel. Just to be safe. We're trying to appeal it but there doesn't appear to be any appeal process at all. Anyway, here's the website: http://foxnewsporn.com/

  7. Can I ask an honest question? Why are people creating fake pages? Are you stupid, or just up to something? Your main accomplishment would be making it hard for users who want to be fans of things to find the real things they want to be fans of.

  9. It's much harder to make a case for an organization to go in and have a presence on FB pages if so many fake pages are getting created for organizations.

  11. I'm getting mightily annoyed with Facebook's lack of care about Pages. When I first heard about them, I thought they were a great idea, but it turns out there's absolutely no vetting for a page, and anyone can masquerade as an official company even though they're just a fan. This means companies and advertisers who wish to operate on Facebook are being discouraged to do so. I looked at 43 facebook pages with over 10,000 fans and deemed that 27 of them were certainly fake, and only 5 appeared to be set up by the game publisher!
