Facebook Enters the Cougar’s Den

-Cougars Den Screenshot-If you missed out on Saturday Night Live this week, then you missed a brief clip during which Facebook entered the “Cougar’s Den”. What is the Cougar’s Den exactly? It’s a brief segment that somewhat resembles the old Coffee Talk clips except that this a group of women (or “Cougars”) that interview random guests. For those of you not aware of the slang term “Cougar”, it refers to “An attractive middle-aged woman who is fit, active, confident, independent, somewhat bohemian and not yet brain dead who is attracted to younger men because most of the available men her age are opinionated lazy slugs with beer guts.” You can view other entries in the Urban Dictionary if you are interested in more details.

The clip included references to fan pages, poking, and the 25 Random Things About Me thread that has been making its way around the site. I’ve included the Hulu clip below. The Facebook references begin at around 1:05 and last for under a minute. What’s interesting is that Facebook has now become a mainstream reference for all generations. This clip caters to the latest data which suggests Facebook’s fastest growing demographic domestically is older women.

Just yesteday Time.com published an article suggesting why the site has been so successful among the older generations. One thing that has yet to be seen is whether or not this older generation will result in an exodus of the younger generations. So far most age groups have continued to grow although the 13 to 17 year old group displayed a temporary decline over the past couple weeks as illustrated by our Facebook demographic data.

It will be interesting to see what trends emerge over the coming weeks as Facebook growth continues to explode. In the meantime, check out the Cougar’s Den via the Hulu clip below.
