Are You Among the Facebook Elite?

-Facebook Grader Logo-Over the weekend there was a fair amount of buzz about a new tool released by Hubspot called the Facebook Grader. The tool attempts to compile a number of factors about a user and then provide them with a ranking. So how is your ranking calculated exactly? Nobody knows but the site does provide some hints about it. Apparently the number is based on the number of friends you have, the power of that network of friends, the completeness of your profile, and a number of other secret factors.

I ran the test and scored a 98.6, ranking me as 104 out of 6,464 people that took the test. Not a bad score but now I’m trying to figure out how to become among the top 50. My guess is that users should be picky in the contacts that they consider “friends” on the site as less influential users end up hurting your score. I happen to have a diverse set of “friends” since I promote myself on this site and Social Times. Perhaps I should be spending more time focusing on the super-connectors!

Ultimately the Facebook Grader tool is interesting but not really useful. The main reason that it isn’t useful is that it doesn’t have a complete image of the Facebook social graph. It would be extremely interesting to develop a unique algorithm to automatically determine who the most influential users are based on profile views and the strength of their social graph. Unfortunately though, not all that information is made public by Facebook.

As such, the Facebook Grader is simply a tool for generating a little bit more buzz for HubSpot. Some people who were once among the top 50 have dropped from the leaderboard after the tool has increased in popularity. Ultimately though, this tool is really nothing more than a simple equation that spits out numbers and tells you how influential Hubspot thinks you are. It provides a moment of entertainment for users but besides that it provides little more.

If you want to find out your “Facebook Score”, go check out the Facebook grader tool.

  3. I haven't tried it out. For the moment I don't accept outside applications within Facebook and I am assuming this falls into that category. I rarely go looking for people to add to Facebook, so I haven't connected with most of the Top 50 in this list. Generally I wait for Facebook to suggest people via "People You May Know." When those suggestions look interesting, I send them an "add invitation" request with a message about how we are or might be connected.
