Facebook Demographics: Countries By Facebook Market Saturation

-Facebook Demographics Icon-I’ve been playing around with our Facebook demographics tool for the past few weeks and trying to come up with some interesting statistics. One interesting chart that I’ve come up with is countries sorted by Facebook market saturation. The statistics turned up some interesting numbers. Iceland for instance has the highest market saturation with over 41 percent of the population having a Facebook presence.

Surprisingly enough, the United States came in 17th despite it being the country which Facebook launched in. Not surprising was Canada and the United Kingdom’s presence in the top 6 countries ranked by market saturation. It would also be interesting to order market saturation as a percentage of those individuals with internet access. Unfortunately the most recent statistics that I could find were from 2000 which would be highly inaccurate by now.

As Facebook grows in size, it’s key for the site to focus on expansion within those countries that have lower market saturations. Top countries tend to increase virally whereas many of the countries with lower saturations require additional investment in marketing. In Germany Facebook has tried a number of methods for increasing their presence, and the same goes for countries like the Netherlands as I highlighted earlier this week.

It will be interesting to see how this chart changes over the coming months as Facebook attempts to double in size to beyond 300 million by the end of 2009.

  1. Not sure I sent this along … data a little old but I did a similar analysis of per capita adoption of Facebook by US teens. California came in 42nd. The full post is at http://mccamon.org/2008/08/california-is-42/

  2. Is there some sort of correlation between homogeneity of population and FB saturation? The US has a massive heterogeneous underclass numbering in the multi-hundred-millions, unlike Iceland and Denmark. Although The U.K. being up there in the charts surprises me.

Maybe it's just the cold. "Cold People facebook."

  5. I would have to refute your argument. As many of the countries on top of the list are not homogeneous, such as Canada which is 2nd. It is as, if not more diversed, than USA. And we can go down the list listing places such as Belgium, Singapore, Switzerland. These are all countries that have more than 2 accepted majorities and were the social structure is many times more diversed than America. Such as the coke pepsi war I believe the Facebook density is just the result of trend advertisement and social factors.

  6. One thing I do recognise though in the trends its the proximity of people. If we look at the geographic variables the population of most of the countries are extremely closed to one an other. 3/4 of the Canadian population lives in the St-Lawrence river, more than half of iceland population lives in Reijavik, and the countries below have huge density per km2. But once again its something to watch and take carefully.
