Facebook has been in the process of testing their new payments system for the past few months and recently reached out to the developer community to request inquiries from those application looking to use test the new system. According to Facebook there are now 8 Facebook applications that are accepting Facebook Credits. The process of using Facebook Credits is fairly straight forward. Users of an application are given the opportunity to make a purchase for upgraded features or for virtual goods and then are prompted to checkout as pictured below.
Facebook has been testing out the system for a few months and now has integrated with the following applications:
- Birthday Calendar
- (fluff)Friends
- GroupCard
- (Lil) Green Patch
- MouseHunt
- PackRat
- Robin Hood
- SocialCalendar
Most of the applications are using Facebook as an alternative payment platform and while we currently don’t know the total volume of transactions being processed, I’d assume there has been at least a few million dollars worth of transactions run through the platform. Virtual transactions are accounting for an increasing percentage of Facebook platform revenue as games have proven to be the most successful applications to date.
While all Facebook games are free to play, most have integrated virtual currencies as the primary source of revenue. Advertising has become a secondary channel for applications like FarmVille, Pet Society, and other large Facebook games. It’s not surprising that 5 of the 8 applications that have integrated Facebook Credits into their applications are also games. Whenever f8 is this year, my guess is that Facebook Credits will be a large component of their announcement.
Have you seen any other applications integrate with Facebook Credits? Are you already brainstorming ways to build Facebook Credits into your own applications?

Are you guys kidding?
I'm a huge fan of a couple of facebook games – one has gone to facebook credits.
I absolutely hate it! I don't want to give my credit card info to an application like this, and using my cell phone for each and every purchase really sucks!
I'm begging you not to use facebook credits. I know at least one application that will be generating less revenue.
Thank you for your time.

the credit system has caused me to stop ALL games on FB and it has RUINED my experience with You all. It is a horrible ordeal to level up thru the levels in happy aquarium and I know of at least 1200 players not going to use that app (which was the Premiere game on FB) ever again and I am furious.

how do u get free facebook credits? Can you tr4ansfer credits in between apps?
Comment by marcella — February 1, 2010 @ 9:35 am
What’s the problem???? Every game on Facebook currently has a way to acquire virtual cash (Farmville Cash, Farmtown Bucks, Favor Points, etc.) by using a credit card or by completing “offers”. These virtual cash can be used to purchase premium items in each game. I think this is a good thing as it pools the “cash”/Favor Points into a single pot that can be used in any game (instead of my having to buy Farmville Cash in Farmville and Favor Points in Mafia Wars, etc.). None of the games on Facebook REQUIRE you to purchase anything. If you don’t want to spend real money, then don’t get any virtual cash/favor points. It’s entirely up to you.

I have just started playing Facebook games. I love them, but I prefer the ones that will let me buy credits through my paypal account. I have had too many friends get their CC info stolen and a site as large as this will not be getting my CC info anytime soon. Too bad all apps can't use paypal instead. I'm sure it will limit my play and make me NOT recommend games not using paypay to other friends. sorry…

Okey, so I bought this for $40.00 for 400 credits, because I was lead to believe I could use this process by only using my credit card (which was already shown in the set-up was already on file)for all the gmes on Facebook. Now I'm reading it is only good for 8 sites on Facebook and not even 1 item listed is a game?? How do I use these credits now that I have bought them and now have not even a clue to how to use them on anything on Facebook?? I am not mad, but feeling the trust in Facebook is weak!! Any answers??
Comment by Sharlotte Heard — July 16, 2010 @ 5:58 am
I'm with Sharlotte. I bought the credits thinking I could use them for a GAME (Farm Town). I would appreciate a refund, as your advertisment was definitely misleading. Get it together, Facebook.

Comment by becky — July 17, 2010 @ 1:54 am
I WOULD LIKE A REFUND! This was very misleading, and I cannot use with any game I play…There should have been a link to show UPFRONT what applications can use the credits – instead of having to search for this info above once I discovered they would not work. I'll be looking for my credit notification….thank you.
Comment by Pam McClenny — July 17, 2010 @ 5:18 am
I'm a little upset as well. I just did the same thing and now have 235 credits I can't use on anything. Thanks Facebook. It said use on your favorite games and I clicked favorite games and it showed the 3 games I play the most. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM FACEBOOK if you want to use the points in the ZYNGA GAMES OR CASTLEAGE or ANY OTHER GAMES.
Comment by Thomas — July 17, 2010 @ 9:36 am
I agree, with Sharlotte and Reni. i bought like 260 face book credits believing i could use it for (yoville) and turns out i cant i would like a refund on this or see them added to more games this is just rediculous i love face book but they need 2 get there act together and post something on there that lets you kno the games u can use the credits on before they send u a add about them…. i need some answers as in what can i do with my credits if i cant use them for my game then i would like a refund has any 1 heard news of that yet?
Comment by Tedra — July 17, 2010 @ 1:32 pm
wtf is up with these credits??? if you can't use them on EVERYTHING then why not wait to put them out there until you can…getting a little ahead of yourselves facebook….get you act together. BEFORE you introduce new things…MAKE SURE THEY CAN BE USED ALL OVER!!!!!
Comment by Kenneth Knight — July 18, 2010 @ 11:33 am
I'm with everyone else. I purchase them thinking I COULD USE them… only to find out they don't work in the game I play. It is completely misleading! I would love a refund as well, or for them to make the credits usable in all of the games we play. At the very least to make it clear WHAT the credits can be used for!!
Comment by Anita — July 19, 2010 @ 7:48 am
We just bought 100 credits and evidently can't use them for Farm Town. Can this be refunded to our credit card? This is very frustrating and FB should specify what they are for.
We'd appreciate a reply asap! Thank you
Comment by ron wilson — July 19, 2010 @ 12:40 pm
I totally agree that the FB credits are misleading. I thought I could use them on all the games and apps I play on FB. The offer is even listed above your favorite games. I only spent $5 – thank goodness… but I would have much rather spent the money on a game I actually play and enjoy. I just lost my money. PHOOEY ON FB!
Comment by Teresa Blalock — July 21, 2010 @ 5:55 pm
I could not use FB credits in Restaurant City even Facebook said that it supports this application. I'd like my money back!
Comment by Susan — July 27, 2010 @ 9:46 pm
you can use the credits to trade for farmville cash and horsehoes and zoo world etc.. go to the place that says get coins as if u was going to purchase money for the game. It will give u an option to purchase with facebook credits. 10 credits= $1.oo value. Hope this helps.
