Facebook Confirms On Homepage: Will Never Charge Users

While we’ve confirmed on multiple instances that Facebook is not charging and never will, the company has posted the same information on the site’s homepage. Now when you register for the site, or login, there’s a good chance that you’ll see the new message which states “Sign Up, It’s free (and always will be)”. The company is hoping that this will dispel all the rumors that continue to emerge that the company will soon begin charging.

There are tons of users that still appear to believe that Facebook may possibly charge. It will be interesting to see if this new step by Facebook will once and for all kill the rumor that Facebook is charging for the site. Despite previous attempts to squash the urban myth, new groups and events regularly sprouted up which suggested that the site was charging. I’ve even had numerous people ask me on various occasions whether or not the company plans on charging for the site.

For those that are still unaware of Facebook’s business: the company generates the vast majority of their revenue from advertising on the site. The company is not at risk of running out of money and is most likely profitable by now.

  1. It says right in their legal notice that they do not guarantee that it will always be free.

But that is for developers… So that is probably where the confusion is.

    http://www.facebook.com/terms.php

Section 9 – 14 – We do not guarantee that Platform will always be free.

So free for some, but not for everyone…

I don't see why they would charge users. It advertising based is it not?

  2. I think Facebook should charge people!!! To drive out all the Scum Bags who think they can become friends with people when they dont even know the person and stop dickheads who think they can pass comment on things and flirt with peoples Girlfriends!!! So yes charge people and maybe one day this sad site which causes nothing but trouble like friends reunited will disappear forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Although Facebook may not charge to access their site, it does appear they are getting ready to start charging people for playing popular games, such as Farmville, by purchasing credits. If you go to the account area at the top right of your Facebook screen and click on it, there is an area titled, "credit balance". Why would a FREE site need credit balances?

There is also a group on Facebook that is titled "NO TO FACEBOOK REQUEST FOR CREDIT CARD AND MOBILE PHONE INFORMATION". Apparently, Facebook members are starting to get pop-up verification notices from Facebook, that request credit card or mobile phone information. Mobile phones can receive charges in lieu of a credit card. People are furious and consider this an invasion of privacy.

Facebook has made this change without any notification in advance, so members of Facebook have no idea what's going on. But, if Facebook is trying to get this information to charge members, I'm sure people will start closing their accounts and there will be a mass exodus from Facebook. Their greed to start charging people will be their downfall.

It is my understanding that Facebook sells information they receive from people who play these games to 3rd parties as an advertising tool. That's why they also ask people to send those annoying invitations to Facebook friends, and in some cases asks them to help them find a cow on Farmville or other items, to increase their score. That's a marketing tool to lure others into the game, so their private information can also be compromised.

People need to stop playing these games and back out of them quick, as they are going to be paying for them by credit card or mobile phone very soon. In addition to games, some of the popular applications on Facebook will also be doing the same.

  6. That's great, except that they are sending people msgs asking for a mobile or credit card number to verify your account- and it has been confirmed that this is indeed FB and not some phisher.

And then they charge you from your mobile number or credit card- but you don't get told that you will get charged until AFTER you have given one of the numbers to them.

But FB will never charge you right? …

And if you are that insecure about your girlfriend all I can say is GROW UP or find another girl friend. I don't want to have to pay for facebook. Maybe, just maybe, you are one of those Scum Bags that you are talking about…. just saying!

  12. How would a credit card number confirm who you are I mean you could use any ones card and any ones cell number. If they were to start charging for the games then you know all know what would happen there the games would down the drain because no one would play them any more. Get my point. And there are all kinds of people that maybe lonely and wants to talk to people that they may or may not know once again get my point I am posting this site on every ones accounts that i see posting the false hood post of facebook charging them. Why must Drama follow no matter what is going on or where ever it can we can all stop the drama right now so lets take a big step and say stop the drama and lets just have fun and enjoy Facebook.
