Celebrity Doppelgangers Go Viral On Facebook

Celebrity Doppelganger IconFacebook users around the world are changing their profile pictures to those of the celebrities they resemble most. Being dubbed “Doppelgänger week on Facebook”, this may just be as large as the Facebook bra color trend which exploded weeks ago. While my feed isn’t filled with friends who switched their profile photo, a quick search for “doppelganger” uncovered a bunch of friends who posted their look-a-like photos.

Many of the photos that I found were surprisingly close to the users. To join in on the fun I’ve posted the closest doppelganger I could come up with for myself below. So where did this new viral Facebook trend start? According to The Huffington Post, an individual named Bob Patel, who works at his company’s I.T. department, was responsible for the trend.

How The Huffington Post found the source of the trend is unknown. That’s like me claiming that I’m the originator of “your mother” jokes. The message that’s being sent around to users is:

It’s Doppelgänger week on Facebook; change your profile picture to someone famous (actor, musician, athlete, etc.) you have been told you look like. After you update your profile with your twin or switched at birth photo then cut/paste this to your status.

While brands are not supposed to launch campaigns that encourage users to change their profile photos, there’s nothing stopping users from doing so. A quick search on Facebook shows that hundreds of users are updating their profile photos every minute. Are you getting in on the action? Who’s your celebrity doppelganger?
Feel free to post links to your doppelganger photo in the comments! Also check out CrowdCampaign’s celebrity doppelganger tool.

  1. Interesting, yes! Serious? I'm having my doubts.

All those Q&A alley-oops already had me questioning the legitimacy of this, but… an author comment on the linked HuffPo story:

More than a few people have questioned whether this interview and Bob Patel are real. Bob Patel is absolutely real. He lives across the street from Santa Claus, just around the corner from The Easter Bunny. Geez…

  2. This isn't any different than last week's 'change your photo to your future you' or 'change your photo to one of you ata wedding, yours or someone elses' or the previous week's 'change your photo to one of you as a kid'. I'm sure you'll see one every week as the MySpaceification of Facebook continues. This isn't related to the bra meme.

  10. No mention of it being illegal to steal copyrighted photos and upload them to facebook? And the fact that it is a violation of the fb Terms of Service too.

  14. Hey this may be a little self promotion, but it's relevant considering doppelganger week is approaching for 2011, but my company made an iPhone app that can be used to find your celebrity doppelganger called Celebrity Twin2me: http://twin2me.com. We believe it's way more awesome and accurate than anyone else's :-) .

Let me know if anyone at allfacebook.com would like some review copies!
