Facebook Campaign May Succeed At Getting Betty White On SNL

whiteAs we reported over a week ago, the Facebook campaign to see Betty White host Saturday Night Live is growing exponentially: beginning as a grassroots plea by a single fan inspired by White’s recent mega-viewed Superbowl ad, this movement is now within reach of its goal. Entertainment Weekly reports that SNL is considering the beloved Golden Girl as part of a multi-host special episode featuring great Women of Comedy.

Although this rumor is not yet confirmed, sources cited in the EW article claim that former SNL superstars Molly Shannon, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler might be co-hosting the show alongside Betty White. The as-of-yet-unconfirmed episode would surely draw in additional viewers who are Betty White fans, or who just want to see the power of Facebook groups put into action.

This move might signal the melding of online and offline entertainment and advertising. If the Facebook group Betty White to Host SNL (please?)! can mobilize its nearly 500,000 members to sway the execs at NBC towards Betty White, it could spark similar campaigns for other SNL host hopefuls, and an infinite number of spin-off causes geared towards letting the audience determine the entertainment they want to see.
