Facebook and Obama Top the Google Zeitgeist

-2008 Google Zeitgeist Logo-Google has released their 2008 zeitgeist and coming in second in the United States, just behind “Obama” was “Facebook”. The third fastest growing global google term currently is “facebook login”. Facebook has grown at a blistering pace since they launched their platform over a year and a half ago. At the time of the platform launch, the company had approximately somewhere between 30 and 40 million users and has since grown to over 130 million.

Most impressive is that Facebook’s growth doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Facebook is rapidly increasing its global gap with MySpace. Domestically Myspace didn’t show up on the zeitgeist, but did manage to come in fourth in Australia, ahead of Facebook. The company also showed up on the Spain and Malaysia zeitgeists.

Overall, the top five social networks around the world, by search were Facebook, MySpace, hi5, Orkut, and LinkedIn. Surprisingly absent from the social network list was Bebo, the social network acquired by AOL for a whopping $850 million. The Google Zeitgeist has rapidly become a leading source for getting a grasp on the hottest trends around the world.

It’s clear that Facebook ranks up at the top, right next to Obama who deservingly received the number one spot in the U.S. Will Facebook be able to keep up the blistering pace and remain in the top 10 one year from now? We’ll have to wait in see, but if they can, Facebook will have close to half a billion active users at the end of next year.

  1. Its interesting to note that people search for the keyword "facebook" or "facebook login" on Google. A google search term typically leads to many search results and paid links on the right.

What is fascinating to note is that facebook has done amazing SEO that the term "facebook" brings a page full of Google results and all (except one on news link)goes to facebook.com. Of course no paid ads as facebook is not buying its own name in SEM.
