Facebook Adds Profile Images To Notifications

Profile Images In NotificationsLast night Facebook made a subtle change which displays user images next to notifications at the top of the site. While it’s not a major upgrade, it’s great in that navigating profile images is frequently much more effective thank navigating text representations of users. In a classic split-testing case, it was found that human photos double conversion rates, and in this case it’s most definitely increasing engagement.

While Facebook is already the largest site in the world based on the time-spent on site, the company has shown an incredible focus on continuous optimization. This effectively illustrates that focus. As Facebook continues to drive forward with improvements that increase engagement, we’ll continue to cover each of those continuous feature improvements.

Thanks to Lenny Mauricio from Publicity Relationships for pointing this out!

  1. I despise this. More real estate taken up by useless photos. Especially photos of people I don't know nor want to know. And just what I need, a longer list of notifications. It's making me not want to click on my notifications.

  2. IMO, this is going to damage usability. The thumbnails increased the size of each notification 3-fold. It now doesn't fit on my laptop's 768px screen.

  3. I actually like this new update and don't think its damaging usability. I think its more user friendly because users prefer visual identifies over reading. This will decrease time spent to see which updates to view.

  7. awful upgrade. why do i want to see more pics and more lines and more "stuff"?? truthfully, facebook is tiring me. it makes me want to go back to the way it used to be. just less complicated. i hate that everything i do both on there and off there gets announced to the world at large .. or at least to every person who knows me. pretty soon there will be an announcement as to when i go to the bathroom or have dinner. what ever happened to a little anonymity?

  8. And……… it's back. With no apparent improvement or change. I am completely not understanding this.

  9. And not only are they back, but they've removed the ability to click on the notificationer's profile or the notification itself. Now it is back to only being able to click to view the action that caused the notification.

  10. If it were up to me, I would gladly take the new profiles in exchange for having the 760px width in the fbml custom pages back. All they did was reduce it to 520px and for what? more advertisements that I adblock anyway.
