Without making any big announcement Facebook has added Javascript to the platform via the FBJS tag. They have come up with an effective solution for enabling those that wish to add advanced functionality to their application (perhaps AJAX?) while still protecting user privacy. Through prepending your application id to all functions and variables, Facebook has now protected the user’s privacy. While I’m not big on hacking, I wonder how soon it will be before someone finds a security hole. We may start to see creative mashups incorporating external APIs such as the Google maps api. For now though many of those features will be limited from within users’ profiles. While Facebook has said that they plan to expand the functionality, there are some limitations for the time being.
