Facebook Adds “Apps You May Like”

This morning Facebook launched the “Apps You May Like” tab to the application directory. While there are no details on what determines these applications, Justin Smith suggests that it is based on the applications that your friends are interacting with. Right now everything is hearsay though and Facebook may choose not to be extremely transparent about it. In theory this gives Facebook a little more control of determining what applications get rewarded on the platform.

This puts Facebook in a similar position to MySpace which has created the “Editor’s Pick” which goes on the app directory homepage. While the new system could be completely automated, chances are good that there is some sort of human intervention. It’s great to see Facebook making some changes to their application directory but there are definitely more changes needed. For one, it would be great to see application ratings integrated in to the directory. What are other changes that you think would be useful?

  1. This looks like just renaming the tab 'Recently Popular'. How apps appear in the Recently Popular tab always seemed like black magic. I think they've been adjusting this list for a while. My first tab still says Recently Popular – so perhaps they are A/B testing it to see how it performs.

  3. I was just about to say that I've had "Apps You May Like" for weeks, however it was never a tab. Link to the apps was on the right, under "By Facebook". Now it has for some reason disappeared. Most of the apps were from my friends in descending order of how many of my friends had the application. Thou I remember seeing some apps on the list that none of my friends had added.
