Yes, Your Facebook Account Has Been Cancelled

-Facebook Disabled Screenshot-

Everyday I get at least 10 emails from people saying that their Facebook account has been cancelled. Their first response is to e-mail Facebook but typically they never hear back. My guess is that if I’m receiving 10 emails a day, Facebook is probably receiving a few thousand at a minimum. It’s a big problem for the company as all the people emailing me claim that they weren’t spamming.

Last week I wrote that Lindsay Lohan had her Facebook account blocked. After complaining on her MySpace blog, Facebook eventually re-enabled the account but said that Lohan had clearly violated the terms of service but would not elaborate as to what exactly occurred. I reached out to a number of people to see what their experiences and got a mixed bag of responses.

Amiee Vongmongkol‘s brother had his account disabled shortly after joining. “To make a long story short [...] he had a lot of catching up to do with people from his 32 years of life.” As a result he was banned after adding too many friends. After sending Facebook an email, he had his account reinstated. Simon Lewis had his account disabled and then “sent facebook a ‘dont u know who i am’ email and they reactivated” his account.

While I’m sure Simon Lewis is an important person, I doubt that was the reason his account was given back to him. Sloane Berrent had her account cancelled after “posting too many items” to the marketplace in a short period of time. She also was able to get her account back. While most of the people that got in touch with me had their account turned back on, most people that email me on a daily basis never get it back.

Have you had your account shut down? Were you able to get it back? My guess is that a large number of people have their account automatically reinstated the first time around whereas the second time it’s a manual process.

  1. My account was disabled initially when I was responding to friends on their walls for their birthday wishes. The multiple messages had triggered off their spam filter. Second time around my account disabled for good. No particular reason was given, the same 'ol "violation of terms and conditions". Facebook can't be allowed to treat it's uses with such resentment.

  2. I hope they don't make their revenue goal. Facebook is officially the Grinch and ruined my Christmas by disabling my account a week before I took a trip and making it impossible for me to access my account, thus I was unable to access my contact information so I wasn't able to meet up with people I'd met on Facebook and planned to meet up with. I contacted Facebook several times about this and they ignored me and didn't put my account back up. This happened to another friend of mine which makes me think that it has been happening a lot. They lured me into using this product and then yanked it from me, the worst business practice I can think of.

  3. So Facebook is still canceling members' accounts. I am afraid this might lead to their downfall. Some of these disgruntled members will quit Facebook completely and join rival social networking sites.

Some time in 2007, my Facebook account was also canceled.Upon querying them, they told me that they disabled it because I took repeated actions that had been construed as spam by the facebook system. I really did this because I was desperately looking for a particular piece of information. I resorted to sending the same message to different people on facebook to increase the probability of getting the information.

I am of the view that Facebook must come up with a better way of detecting spam. Disabling member's accounts like this will not help.

  4. The first time mine was canceled, i was asked to send proof, i emailed a copy of my passport and was reactivated, 2 months later they canceled me for "spamming" which is funny, since i only use FB to play some social games, and i use the games internal feature to to invite friends to play with me, so i have no clue what "spamming" i did, ive sent them a couple of emails and heard no response yet.

  5. Got a few questions.. What is the best way to add the friends of my FB friends without getting canceled by FB? How many friends are we allowed to add per week/month/year? What are their rules as far as canceling a member? How many "notes" or photos can we add per month too? I never want to spam people, but what FB email address do we use to beg ..if they do kick us to the curb?

  8. My account was 'disabled' this morning. I've only been on FB for 6 months. I am not using it for business purposes, am not spamming (although I have experienced many taking advantage of this opportunity over and over), I am not shoving my political views down anyone's throat, am not vulgar and only have 163 friends connected to me. I've been out of work for a year now and strictly use it for social purposes. Isn't that the intent? FB seems more 'selective' than anything else.

I was not given an explanation after sending an email questioning this action.

Their 'terms' seem to be very much of convenience. I'm disappointed with this 'big brother'. If you're going to watch and monitor – do it fairly.

  10. This is the second time I’ve been cancelled. The first time, I received no response. So I set up a new account under a slightly modified name. Now I’ve been disabled again. I hardly used it, but they’ve decided to cancel me anyway. I’m trying not to get worked up about it, but it’s hard not to.

  11. aol canceled my account stating the words "illegal and advertisement. Therefore I have been unable to access my facebook account. Of course I have contacted facebook via email & pony express but to no avail. I am still locked out of facebook because my aol account was the access account.

I have just today 6 weeks later set up a yahoo account but all that does is get me back in touch with my friends I had an address for.

  12. My account was cancelled because my roommates thought that it would be funny to change my birthday. I was soon after unable to access my account because I was under 13. Im actually 18 and was over 13 when I started my account over two years ago. I emailed them back explaining the situation but that was only a few days ago. Any input on my situation? Does it look really bleak or am I overly nervous?

  13. I am not being allowed to log into my account because my email is “invalid.” I changed my log in email from my school email (weinerm@dickinson.edu) to my personal email address (miriam.b.weiner@gmail.com). I never had any problems until a week ago when I tried to log in. I reported the problem and received an email back telling me that there was no account registered to my address (although it is listed in my contact information). When I tried on Monday, I was automatically signed into my account, and I thought the problem was fixed, but when I went to change my password just to be safe, I was kicked off the site and the “Invalid Email” error note flashed again. I have been reporting the problem every day since then, but have yet to hear anything. I would really like to be granted access to my account (and the information in it) again. I haven’t ever violated the terms of use.
    Thank you,
    Miriam

  15. I've had several FB accounts cancelled for no valid reason, and no proof of what they said I did (which I did not) was ever proffered. I am going to try to bang my way back in.

This would be better if it was a public company.

  23. i put my status as " people are saying that the christ has resurrected" , and what happens? after 4 years on fb , respecting all rules , reporting every violator , and making an official network for my university , they disable my account without any warning at all!! i never had any warning , neither violated any term!

i contacted them , they said the decision is final.

    Comment by Ann — April 19, 2010 @ 9:23 pm

  25. I DIDN'T GET ANY WARNING ON MY ACCOUNT NOT EVEN ONCE, I NEVER BOTHERED NO ONE AND I NEVER MADE ANYTHING WRONG REGARDLESS OF THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS, AND I DIDNT GET ANY EXPLANATION EXCEPT THAT THE DECISION IS FINAL, WHERE DO U THINK U R LIVING , IN A DICTATOR REGIME ???

I THINK THAT WE HAVE TO SEND MAILS TO ALL OUR FRIENDS PREVENTING THEM OF WHAT WILL HAPPEN SOON TO ALL THE ACCOUNTS , AND I SUGGEST TO START BACKING UP ALL OUR INFOS THERE CZ IT SEEMS THEY WONT HOLD LONGER, AND IT WILL BE A HUGE CRASH ON THIS SITE, ANY OTHER SITE TO SUGGEST WITH BETTER SUPPORT ?
