Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg could be in hot water over a “Draw Muhammad” contest hosted on the site last month. He is being investigated by Pakistani authorities under a section of the penal code that makes blasphemy against Muhammad punishable by death.
The contest, called “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day,” was sparked by the censorship of a South Park episode which depicted the Muslim figure and resulted in death threats against the show’s creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It was designed as a protest against the limitation of free speech and called for users to create a drawing representing Muhammad. What began as a joke in the United States, however, was not found funny in Pakistan where depictions of Muhammad are strictly prohibited. Pakistan banned Facebook for all of its 45 million users until the site agreed to block the contest page in that country. Once the page was blocked the ban was lifted.
A lawyer in Pakistan, Muhammad Azhar Siddique filed an application for a First Information Report claiming that the owners of Facebook had committed a “heinous and serious” crime under Section 295-C of the Pakistani Penal Code. That section reads:
“use of derogatory remark etc, in respect of the Holy Prophet, whoever by words, either spoken or written, or by visible representation, or by any imputation, innuendo, or insinuation, directly or indirectly, defiles the sacred name of the Hold Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable for fine.”
To be clear, a First Information Report simply launches a criminal investigation, and charges have not yet been formally filed. Currently under investigation by the Deputy Attorney General are not only Zuckerberg but also his fellow co-founders Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, and the German woman who initiated the “Draw Muhammed” contest. Pakistan’s United Nations representative has also asked to escalate the issue in the UN General Assembly.

And Zuckerberg should care why? Unlikely that he's planning his next vacation there, or that the US government would extradite him to Pakistan for this.

Mark Zuckerberg was WAY OUT OF LINE, to have started such a racist page, or contest! There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for defaming another person's religion and religious beliefs! This is ignorant, insensitive, and hateful beyond reason! Who is this Zuckerberg, that he feels he has the right to do something as blatantly racist as this? So what if he is rich, and is the founder of Facebook! As someone responsible for operating a social network where people from ALL NATIONS come together to talk, exchange information and ideas, and participate in games and groups and many other activities. I am not a Muslim, but like any culture or belief, I try to understand them. I don't hate people because they don't follow my religion, or my cultural beliefs, or have different skin pigmentation. Mr. Zuckerberg's name suggests that he's probably Jewish. I would think that a people that has been as horribly persecuted as they have been, would demonstrate infinitly more tolerance for others. Mr. Zuckerberg most deinitely DOES NOT deserve to be condemned to death for this stupid and racist act. Muslim people MUST LEARN that people in other parts of the world have different beliefs. They have THE RIGHT to their beliefs. Every nation on Earth DOES NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW ISLAM. And God, or Allah, or Yaweh (they are one and the same!) DOES NOT command that we all follow Islamic teachings! You CAN NOT condemn others to death for doing or saying something that you feel, goes against your faith! People of other faiths living in other countries are NOT answerable to you! The same rule applies to Christians, Jews,Buddhists, and others. You have no right to insist that other people follow your rules! Mr. Zuckerberg DESERVES to serve time behind bars, and to pay a severely stiff fine for his heinous and disgusting behavior! He should be removed from any connection with Facebook! It makes no difference that he founded it. He LOST ALL RIGHT to do any involvement with Facebook, when he used it as a forum for expressing his personal and very biased beliefs, and persuading others to take part in it. The writers and Staff of the "South Park" series use their "cartoon" to air their own religious and personal beliefs. It is a clear demonstration of exactly how low humanity has fallen. To think that a lot of cartoon cut-outs, with young children at the forefront, who spout a ceaseless stream of profanity, is considered funny. The series does have some humorous segments, but the filthy language, the sexual, racial, religious, and political bias overshadow the series as a whole. I don't think a fat adolescent, sitting on a couch stuffing his face with "cheesy poofs", while watching TV or playing video games, and hollering at his mother in the next room, calling her a "STUPID B*TCH" is funny! Nor, is this same fat kid calling another child a "DUMB JEWISH AS*HOL*"! Gay men are shown as shirtless, guys decked out in women's make up and earrings, with a purse over one shoulder, and wearing a puppet on one hand. Black men think only of sex. And old people are ALL dangerous and senile, and too far removed from rational thinking that they cannot be allowed to drive cars! Writers and producers for series like this, along with shows like "Family Guy should be made to strictly follow guidelines, that rule out racism, gender-bias, homophobia, and age discrimination! People watch cartoons to laugh, not to listen to other people's political views and prejudiced beliefs! Similar rules should also be applied to social networks like Facebook.

Gloria, first off, Zuckerberg is not the one that made the page. He is being charged because he owns the page and is the President of Facebook. Second of all, it's not racism. A religion is not a race.
Comment by Brian Krassenstein — June 19, 2010 @ 6:50 am
Pakistani newspapers have not covered this story at all which means this was made up
The original originator of this story was idrael and now other media organizations copied and pasted the story to create a propaganda story. This is not true, cia and mossad planted this story and western news networks reprinted it. Please disregard this story and do not believe the reprinter of this article on anything from niw on as they have just lost credibility. We really need to fact check these people and ban them. Thanks.
Comment by Factfinder — June 19, 2010 @ 8:37 am
Gloria, you should lose all rights to writing on the internet for your blatant disregard for paragraphs.
P.S. In the US we don't jail people for saying things we find offensive. Luckily for you, we also don't jail people for their inability to use paragraphs. A far worse offense in my book.

Unbeliavable, I kind of agree that Mark maybe should have not used his worldwide social network to make fun of somebody's religion. But the thing with southpark is, atleast for me that it's not funny cause it's racist or profound or insulting.
Its funny cause it points out how racist, profound and insulting people are. You know like those stand-up comedians who tell jokes that are funny cause they are true?

Comment by Fritz — June 20, 2010 @ 1:18 pm
He doesn't own the "page", he owns a website. A user of the website created the page.
Unless Facebook was stupid enough retain the "all content created for or on this website is the intellectual property of Facebook" clause (I'm pretty sure they got rid of that by now) Zuckerberg is not legally responsible at all. Only the minds of crazed political fanatics who have completely bastardized their religion.
Comment by Tom Ditmars — June 20, 2010 @ 1:56 pm
… and to be even more accurate, he doesn't even "own" Facebook. He created it and is the president of the company that does own it.
Comment by Tom Ditmars — June 20, 2010 @ 1:57 pm
Really don't see how an art contest is "disgusting" or "heinous". Demanding the death or incarceration of a person for something they sketched that did no damage to anyone, THAT is disgusting and heinous.
The fact that Zuckerberg has less to do with this contest than Gloria does is quite beside the point, although it is, in and of itself, quite a valid point.
Also, fascinatingly, because, in the middle of Gloria's rant, she proclaimed about people not having to follow Islam, she, too, is now susceptible to the same punishment by death, for having derided the teachings of Muhammed.
Based on all she wrote, I'm sure she's quite willing to turn herself in to the Pakistani authorities for her duly deserved punishment. She expects nothing less of Zuckerberg, and he didn't even do anything half as bad as she did. Tsk tsk.

Courts of Pakistan are not naming Mark guilty and its just a case that has been filed under the Pakistani court and proceedings are still to be made….and you said that Muslims have no right force people of other religions and vice versa, well no Muslim is forcing other person to follow the faith we believe in as our Prophet's (p.b.u.h) teachings do not allow us to do it with force. But don't you think its the right of 1 billion Muslims of this planet that their most respectful personality should be given respect in the country's and by the people we want to be friend with? I mean i can't even think of saying bad things about other's religion infront of him or at his absense!

Gloria,
While you were composing your diatribe against hatred and racism, why did you find it necessary to add that "Mr. Zuckerberg's name suggests that he is probably Jewish?" Oops! Looks like you're just as guilty as the rest.
What if Zuckerberg were a Taoist? Would he still be held to a higher standard? And by the way, Who the hell are you?
So Mr. Zuckerberg's name sounds Jewish, eh?
I'd recommend following Patty's advice. Some herb tea, a nice bath, and lay off the ADHD meds. By the way, my last name is…

It is alarming to me nowadays how few people understand basic issues of human rights and freedom.
Mort Zuckerman, and the woman who launched the page, committed no violence, and advocated no violence. Now they are being threatened with death — a sentence that, in most civilized countries, is reserved for the most heinous murderers. If Muhammad Azhar Siddique succeeds, they may become candidates to join the growing class of people who are under a fatwa — which means 24/7 bodyguards wherever they go (not just Pakistan, Meredith), and possibly a life in hiding.
The "Everybody Draw Muhammed Day" was not only intended as a joke. It was designed to show solidarity with this class of people by diluting possible targets among thousands of people. Just as the whole intelligentsia in 1989 linked arms in support of Salman Rushdie — whether or not they liked his prose, or thought he was a good writer — such a measure was seen as a support for those cartoonists and artists who have been killed, and those threatened with death.
This is not about respecting religion — it cannot be unless you show the same respect for Christianity and Judaism that you show for Islam. But you don't.
It's about fear.
Freedom of speech can only begin when you say something that I find offensive.

lonelyguitar i quote one piece of writing from your preivious comment "i read Gloria's comments she is write we do not have any right to give death sentence's,but what we say about iraq?just because we feel threat from him we kill hundred thousand people, what is this?this is'nt hyporatic behaviour?" the americans or the british invaded iraq to try and erradicate terrorism, not just because we feel threatend. also, regarding the "just because we feel threat from him we kill hundred thousand people" quote, it is not just because we feel threatend as a nation, but because as we witnessed in the 9/11 bombings, not only did a serious amount of innocent people were killed/wounded, 2 very important buildings were destroyed and if that happens to britain (already with economical difficultys) we would be in seriously deep water, and could ignite a dramatic chain effect.
regarding the "is'nt this hyporcrital behaviour" no it most certainly isn't, the goverment and military have roles to play, and they are protecting the well-being of the country.

There is something called United Nations, International Law, Freedom Of Speech (within "norms") and above all this, sanity and compassion. Internet is the easiest, fastest and most effective way to convey your message (and mindset) across. If that message contains the usual hatred, racist content and/or disrespect of anyone or anybody's beliefs, obviously it will be condemned on a global scale and legally pursued by the aggrieved party. It has been happening since the beginning of time and will continue to happen irrespective of as many excuses, reasons or logics that we may come up from stopping it to happen. My 2 cents pls…

Geez this reminds me of yesterday when I gave each of my labs a giant bone (with meat sauce) and they consumed the bones without even savoring them first. I couldn't believe I spent the extra couple of bucks on sauce when they didn't bother to recognize the expense. "What can I do, they are dogs…they have limited intellect".
I know nothing of the facts of this story, but I know we jump quickly to accusation without evidence…the internet is a rumormill. History tells me this isn't the first or last time someone has stepped over a religious line based on manmade doctrine and ideas. Something tells me Mark is above the judgement, thank God for intellect.

No, the fact religeon is STILL around pushing its controlling ways on us is a sheer fire case of how much humanity has fallen….The minute that goes and everyone just thinks "F!"£ it i don't care what you beleive in" then the world would be a hppy place…instead we have people like you, enforcing cencorship, telling people to shutup should they have a view YOUR deem not as good….
oh and FYI, most people in this world, guess what sweetheart, ARE RACIST! I myself have black in my family, and even my great grandad used to call his grandkids little crackers and so on, and ya know what, i enjoyed being called a little cracker by my black grandad….but hey thats just me, tolerance was injected into me at a young age…im even willing to tolerate your silly god loving closed minded DRAMTICALY missinformed arse, MISS GLORIA.
