Tonight millions of people around the world will stare up at the sky to watch meteors crash into our atmosphere resulting in beautiful explosions (as long as you aren’t in the city). So far over 900,000 people have registered for the Lenoid Meteor Shower 2009 event on Facebook which means there’s a decent chance you’ve seen it show up in your news feed.
So what do you need to know about the event? Well the first thing you’ll need to know is that you need to stay up late if you’re on the east coast. Fortunately, if you’re reading this article, you probably will be up a little longer! Another thing that would be good for improving your viewing experience would be to hop on a teleportation device or the next supersonic jet you can find, in hopes that you reach Asia in time to see 300 – 400 meteors per hour.
If you are in the U.S. you can enjoy upwards of 30 meteors an hour, but make sure you aren’t sitting in the city, as the light will damage your ability to check out the meteor shower. Is it worth staying up all night to see the meteor shower? Probably not, however waking up for an hour to check it out probably isn’t a bad idea.
While I’m guessing more than 1 million people will see the meteor showers, 924,000 have registered for the event so far. That’s up over 20,000 in the past hour so there’s a good chance the event could surpass 1 million shortly. Will you be watching or sleeping?
