FriendFeed Rips Off Facebook Newsfeed

A new service called FriendFeed takes all of the features from the Facebook newsfeed and opens it up to the web. This is honestly set up for a quick acquisition by Google; somewhat coincidental given that the founders are ex-Google Maps developers. FriendFeed does everything that Facebook does but across the entire web. If your friend shares a RSS feed item, scrobbles a track on Last.fm, tweets on Twitter, posts a video to YouTube, stumbles upon a new website, adds a movie to their Netflix queue, uploads a picture to Picasa or Flickr or one of a number of other actions on any of the 23 services currently supported, you will be notified.

Given that Google is preparing to open up the social component of the web and attempt to own the social backbone (as I discussed yesterday), this is going to be a quick acquisition. Honestly, with the addition of FriendFeed to their arsenal, Google is going to have a serious chance of taking on Facebook. If you want to learn more about FriendFeed, read the New York Times article on it or check out the FriendFeed website. Do you think an acquisition by Google will help them to rival Facebook?
