Is your hospital on Facebook? Chances are, it’s not fully utilizing the social network, if it’s on there at all.
Hospitals are missing out on major opportunities to better connect with their community, interact with patients, and yes, extend their brand on Facebook, according to public relations and marketing firm Verasoni AhHa and Simon Associates Management Consultants.
The companies conducted a study of 120 hospitals varying in size and specialties across the U.S., analyzing the number of contacts each has, the frequency and types of posts, and the use of integration tools available on the social media site.
“While the numbers clearly indicate that patients are on Facebook, it is the job of hospitals to find them, and engage them in a meaningful way. And, just because a hospital is on Facebook doesn’t mean that they are building a meaningful Facebook experience for both the hospital and the patient,” said Abe Kasbo, chief executive officer of Verasoni Worldwide, in the press release regarding the study.
The study found that children’s hospitals did the best job of using Facebook to engage with their community — they had the largest number of followers and appeared to be more “robust, engaging, and relevant.” Other findings included:
Are you following your hospital on Facebook? If so, what can they do to better engage and inform you?
Michael Sinclair and Daryl Ballentyne have crafted a cool new fitness application called Personal Trainer. The two developers have gone through a lot of trouble to create a very comprehensive tool when it comes to working out. Though at the end of the day its a marketing tool by Supplement Source, it is a good tool for novices to get an exposure to sample workouts. The application is designed to generate a sample workout for individuals based on the information that they submit (weight, age, fitness level, goals, etc). It also provides some basic nutritional and cardiovascular guidelines. It’s pretty cool to play around with it and get different workout suggestions. However, as I pointed out in my fitness blog over at Fitmethod.com, the application ignores several important fitness principles and I don’t think that its workout will be very effective for the average user. If you are interested, go check out the Personal Trainer application.
Do you have weight problems? The FatSecret recently released an application that allows you to track your diet. You can create a profile with your target weight, get your own personal journal and interact with other FatSecret members. There are a number of online sites that help you track your weight and interact with other people online that are also trying to lose weight. Ultimately they are supposed to be virtual support groups. Two that come to mind are Spark People, Traineo, and Revolution Health (which is an all encompassing health community). While I am fortunate enough not to have to deal with obesity, there are plenty of people that are battling obesity in this country so I’m sure applications like this have the potential to be come popular. If you are looking to shed a few extra pounds, go check out the Diet & Weight Loss application.
