Breaking: Facebook Releases New Design

Facebook has been testing out the new profile design for the past five months but for the first time ever, they have released the new full site design (pictured below). You can access the new site by visiting www.new.facebook.com.

New Homepage

The first noticeable change is a complete removal of the left-hand sidebar. Instead all of the links have been moved to a wider sidebar on the right hand side which appears to be double the size of the original. The applications have been moved to two different locations in the header and to the right hand sidebar.

New Facebook Homepage

New Applications Dropdown

There is a new drop-down menu in which users can view all of their applications. It’s not that great though if you have hundreds of applications installed as it takes a fair amount of time to browse through the applications (see the video below).

New Publisher Links

The top of the newsfeed now displays links to the publisher box on the new profile. This enables quick access for posting new notes, new photos, new videos and sharing links with your friends.

Publisher Links Screenshot

Bookmarks in Sidebar

Bookmarks in Sidebar ScreenshotAs mentioned above, Facebook has moved the application links to two places: the navigation bar and the sidebar. The sidebar version shows only 8 applications but by clicking “See All” expands to show other applications. For some reason not all my applications are displayed in these links. For instance my “Mouse Hunt” link is no longer present. Additionally, it doesn’t appear that these links show up as the default links you initially had under the old design.

Removal of Social Ads?

SocialAds Removed ScreenshotFacebook used to display SocialAds flyers but apparently those are no longer displayed. I’m not sure if this is a fluke or a strategic decision by Facebook. Facebook will be announcing new initiatives on Wednesday and perhaps some of these initiatives are expected to remove this one. My guess is that this is a temporary removal as it doesn’t make much sense to completely remove SocialAds flyers. That also means that all ad campaigns that were running will not currently display on the new homepage or new profile.

Honestly this doesn’t make much sense and I’m guessing that Facebook may have instead chosen to redesign SocialAds. I have reached out to Facebook and am waiting for them to respond at this point.

New Friends Page

There is now a new friends page. While it is not substantially different the friend lists have been moved from the right hand side to the left hand side. The width has also been expanded to accommodate the new site design.

New Friends Page Screenshot

Design Feedback Form

Facebook has also included a form for users to provide feedback about each page’s new design. They have also emphasized that this feedback is expected to be positive and courteous as I’m sure they expect some negative feedback about the new design. On every page you can simply click “Send Feedback about this Page” directly above the navigation bar. Over the coming month, Facebook will be making updates to make sure that the new design provides a good user experience.

Feedback Form Screenshot

Conclusion

The new site design is much cleaner and simplified a lot of the features on the site. The fact that one of my applications didn’t display on the homepage leads me to believe that there are still bugs on the new design. Facebook is expected to announce the new design to users over the coming days at which point applications will begin noticing new users interfacing in new ways. The true test will be whether or not applications experience a reduction in growth rate. We will have to wait and see!

They have the user base and not about funwalls and scrabulous – now it is all about friends news feeds. I think it is great for users and the grim reaper for app developers. 11. The new home page is much better suited for advertising.1) Facebook can now include the popular 300×250 ad unit… Before this FB could only use the odd 120×600.2) FB’s ad strategy are ads within the news feed. The wider and more focused view on the news feed should help their inline advertising campaigns.(who is FB’s competition in advertising that everyone except FB is overlooking? FriendFeed)Overall impression – Congrats, the new home page is a much better design for the Facebook advertising team. We should see revenues jump considerably.

There's going to be a bunch of disgruntled peeps unless FB has something up their sleeve. Hm, I'm in the San Diego Network and don't see the new design just yet… probably another day or two. Amazing web programming all around. I noticed a few small features missing: – No wall post count – Can't browse by clicking Birthdays or Networks anymore – Can't filter activity anymore, and perhaps RSS are gone?I'll miss all those things and having everything on the same page (with the exception of people with too many apps).

  41. Totally ridiculous to not let you go back to the standard version when their system "has detected" that I am using an old version of IE – when I have just done a full system upgrade!! Maybe this is just a ploy to get people off of IE and onto some other browser. I'm not keen to junk my system up with yet another browser. Even deleting history etc doesn't let you go back to the old version – probably a registry setting but I don't have time to find it. Facebook are not doing themselves any favours on this one!! I like the idea of tabs & the better organization available for folks with lots of apps & info but new design won't let me display all my beloved applications in left bar OR move them somewhere else as in past. I kinda miss the whole lot that was me (& others) being on one page–I edited as necessary. Best part of Facebook for me was seeing a snapshot of who someone was instantly. Yes, I can definitely see where re-design will help keep new ad dollars following in–I just hope I'll be checking in as often to view. I've re-verted to old FB interface for now…

  104. I just have to say that the NEW FACEBOOK is not very user friendly. They changed everything. Rule: If its not broken why fix it. FB should just improve on what the users recommend. Changing the whole design & flow of thins just serves to disrupt whatever people already know. People have already gotten so used to the OLD FB interface. They know where everything is. And them boom, they changed it all. I can't even find the basic EDIT PROFILE link when i logged in??? Hmmm, why do all the social sites like to revamp their interface. Revamp design is ok, revamp interface?? its like changing your already successful strategy. Its better to value add & keep value add, not change & be something new???I am a Web Strategist, looking frm a strategy point of view, FB users are increasing rapidly, there is no need to change. Unless ur users r declining, like what friendster did. Friendster changed in the direction of FB to add newsfeed functionality etc & now they are slowoly getting back more users. But FB now, this change? for what purpose?Alex

  110. I deleted my Myspace account because I hated it's complexity, I love Facebook's simplicity and it meets all of my socializing capabilities…however…the new facebook is just chaotic. People enjoy simplicity these days, if you're going to force people to use the "new" yet "not improved" Facebook, then at least always give them the option to continue using the old facebook for as long as they want and make sure it's still in working condition.P.S. I completely agree with Jeff (#47), Facebook isn't broken…but the chat needs some major reworking.

I also liked having the logout link not in the drop down menu. It would be nice if you had the option of changing you layout first. Maybe they can let you try the new layout and from there let you have the final say so.

So keep your eyes open for a company called "Social Pog" Thats right from what I heard one of the initial creators went rogue and has been creating a new social network that Beta testers are saying far trumps Facebook or Myspace. The last I heard the Website will be going live to the public very soon.

I don't care I just want to know what my friends r doing… I have lost track of them… Please atleast let us block all the likes and what other people write on walls.
