How To Block Facebook Pillow Fight Wall Posts

-No Pillows Icon-Last week we covered the ongoing wall spam problem on Facebook with the Pillow Fight application being one of the primary sources of the spam. We weren’t aware that there’s a way to block the spam, however the developer of the Pillow Fight application commented on our story and provided directions for turning off pillow fight wall posts. We explain how to block the wall posts from Pillow Fight below.

Prior to our explanation, I thought it would be important to emphasize that this is not a resolution for blocking all wall spam. Unfortunately Facebook doesn’t have a way to turn off application wall posts from friends so this only works with the Pillow Fight application. The fact that this bare bones page exists within the Pillow Fight application highlights a significant flaw in the Facebook Platform. My guess is that this will be resolved within the coming weeks.

So how do you stop your friends from posting annoying Pillow Fight wall posts on your profile? It’s pretty easy. All you need to do is visit the Pillow Fight opt-out page. Then click on “Do not let my friends post to my wall” (as pictured below). That’s it! You’ve now successfully opted out from having your friends post on your wall.

The only problem with this solution? There’s no guarantee that it will work as it’s at the developer’s discretion. Given that the Pillow Fight developer told us how to block their own application we can only assume that they are being honest. As I mentioned already, there’s a very good chance Facebook will stop the application wall spam in the near future as it’s degrading the overall experience for users.

Also since publishing details of wall spam we’ve only seen an increase in the volume of it. Are you annoyed by the Facebook wall spam?

  2. Sorry but I have to disagree that the pillow fight wall posts are spam! I've been getting those and I think it's fun to have a virtual pillow fight. I enjoy it. I make sure not to "hit" anyone who hasn't gotten me first because I know some people find the applications annoying but I think it's a fun little back and fourth game. Still I think it's good that people can block it if they want to.

  4. Considering the glaring typo — "You friends are. . ." — my confidence in the developers giving good information is pretty low.

  5. Ofcourse, the opt out works. If anybody has issues with making it work, please contact us through the app page and we will help you out.

Nick, the fact that we have implemented this system on our own (when nobody else has) should show you that we are trying to keep users happy and are trying to make an honest living by innovating in the facebook app ecosystem.

I was hoping for a word of encouragement or even a pat on the back for getting the app to 15 million users and half a million fans. However, we are still waiting for something positive from you. If you have better ideas for social games that can be big on FB, please, let's have lunch together — I live in SF too, and would love to work on something together with you and win the crunchies next year.

  6. Anand, haters are gonna hate, don't let it bring you down. Personally I love your app! It's really fun! If you have an opt out option and even left a comment on another post so allfacebook could write an article about it you're obviously not trying to spam people. Some people seem to get annoyed at any kind of interaction with their wall on Facebook, even regular wall posts from their friends! Why this is is beyond me. By the way it would be so cool if users could design their own pillows from Jpegs! (hint hint) Anyway, thanks for creating this app for the users of Facebook. Some of us appreciate it. :)

  7. Hey Anand, I've been having a problem where when I hit someone with a pillow, the message I typed doesn't go through… could you help me please?

    Comment by Jake — January 17, 2010 @ 11:51 pm

  8. Did not work for me. As soon as I saw the post, I opted-out.

    Still had one come through.

Now, perhaps there is a "proccessing" delay. That's weak, if that is the case.

  9. So, why exactly was my second comment not approved? Because I said I actually liked Pillow Fight and thought that Anand was doing a great job with it? Ridiculous.

    Comment by Jake — January 18, 2010 @ 9:29 pm

  10. thanks, it works ;)

  11. i do not want hit me with the pillow

    Comment by john hystad — January 19, 2010 @ 9:37 pm

  12. Why not only let the dingbats who play this whap me once and they are blocked from hitting me again until I respond? Or at least put a timer on it, so I don't get hit every two days from the same person?

Somehow I think my moron/friend is somehow getting Pillow Fight Points for leaving your repeated, unreturned shit bombs on my wall.

Anand, you win "Most Annoying FB App Developer!"
