Again, Facebook Will Not Charge Users To Access The Site

-Pay Here Image-The ongoing thread that Facebook will soon begin charging for their site doesn’t appear to be slowing. The other night I was having dinner with a family friend who told me about a scoop he had that Facebook would soon begin charging for the site and proceeded to explain why he would pay. While it’s great that Facebook has provided value to his life and millions of others, the company will not charge users to access the site.

Just two weeks ago we wrote that Facebook will not charge users, however millions of users continue to be deceived. One Facebook group, “300,000 MEMBERS NEEDED TO STOP FACEBOOK FROM CHARGING £/$14.99 A MONTH”, has successfully attracted over 474,000 users. Another group claims Facebook will begin charging on July 1st, but it’s a flat out lie used as a way to drive thousands of users to the group.

While Facebook has systematically shut down groups spreading this false information one at a time, I’d expect the company to create a filter to prevent these groups from being created in the first place. As I wrote in December, “Facebook didn’t become the most popular site in the U.S. on Christmas by charging for their service, and they aren’t going to become the largest site in the world by charging for their service.”

This is an ongoing rumor which Facebook continues to deny, stating that their service is ad supported. To all the users who think Facebook will start charging for their service, this article is for you. It never happened before, and while Facebook could generate billions by charging for their site, it’s not going to happen. All the groups stating that Facebook will charge are nothing more than flat out lies.

  2. It is pretty sick. But I just had a conversation with a few friends.. they dont mind paying a few bucks to use the social

I don't think that's happening for a long time to come. But you can't really complain against such acts of trying to get attention. Certain blogs people and apps have actually tried manipulating Haiti's Earthquake to gain popularity. This is sounds much less sickening.

  5. Don't be funny, Nick. FB shutting dowm groups spreading false information like this one? FB allows hate speech, racism, awful lies spreading (e.g Holocaust never happened ect')! so do you really think they'd bother themselves by creating a filter or somethin to stop this rumour?!

I agree, it's actually embarrassing how gullible people can be (e.g who's watching your profile? invite 2000 friends and so on). People are so stupid that it's amazing, I'm telling you

They make plenty of money already and it would surly reduce their earnings by charging the users because users would just move to a free site. And charging users would just be a bad business idea and any company as big as facebook knows that."

  20. In the late '902 Mirabilis was the owner of the IM system, ICQ. A rumour started that ICQ was to be sold and the new owners would charge for the service. Of course a protest got started but went unheeded. Mirabilis sold the service and the new owner announced a charge. Users dropped like flies and switched to Yahoo Messenger. So the new owners changed to AD revenues instead. Too little – too late. ICQ never recovered. Yahoo and MSN left ICQ in their dust.

FB will follow their footsteps if the charge is enforced.

They know these sites are like drugs; addictive. A crack dealer will give you enough to get hooked free of charge. Once you can't function without it, you gotta pay.

  31. I would like to clarify something about the Haiti fundraiser groups…not all of them are there just to gain members. I own a Haiti charity group and I actually pay to Haiti. Usually you can tell if a group like that is fake…I think it is evident that mine is not. Also, I really do think it is sad that so many people have the brains of a monkey. How? They believe that Facebook will start to charge them. The only reason that these groups exist is because of human greed. The group owners only want more and more.

  35. Two of my friends and I were watching the news last night, one that is based in seattle and one that is based in bc(which is where I live) both said they would be charging $8 and change. Though I wasn't paying as much attention to that as I was to my WoW so I don't remember when it said that it would begin.

Now the news may have the wrong info, don't start yelling at me over this, I'm just saying it was on two different news channels last night.

    Comment by Kaly — February 1, 2010 @ 11:33 pm

  36. I completely forgot to add this part. The reason their charging, according to one of the friends I was watchig with last night, is apparently some of their HTML was stolen from myspace and myspace sued. Again, this may be wrong, I'm just playing messenger.

    Comment by Kaly — February 1, 2010 @ 11:34 pm

  37. We can confirm that this is no hoax, it is indeed a group that was created by facebook insiders to findout the reaction of there millions of users to see if users are willing to pay for such a service.

While Facebook has systematically shut down groups spreading this false information one at a time, with near to little fans I’d expect the company to create a filter to prevent these groups from being created in the first place, i just wonder why they are not closing this group down with nearly half a million fans, and thousands of hoax posts on thousands of forums and websites out there, because they are the one who own (created) the group.

I beg all not to fall for this, they are just testing you to see if they can squezee any money from the you the user. I can also confirm that out of thousands of comments in forums there were few people saying that they were prepared to pay around $2-3 for the service.

Facebook didn’t become the most popular site in the U.S. on Christmas by charging for their service, and they aren’t going to become the largest site in the world by charging for their service, well i can tell you that i am also a social application developer and i know how things are in this game, you first create such platform get many users as you can hooked to it and within few years of constant usage that has all your data friends, contacts, albums and so on, you are hooked to it! Now this is the tricky bit, where users will find it hard to part with their artificial world, its a bit like owning your own website hosted on free hosting for life service providers, where you have invested hundreds of hours developing it with hundreds of post and a year later you are asked to pay for your hosting or else, what do you do? You rather find your self another free hosting company or pay for the hosting charges you have been asked to pay.

This is not an ongoing rumour with Facebook, its a group that is created by Facebook insiders, trying to find out if people are willing to pay for such a personal data orientated service. They are stating that their service is ad supported, i would ask that you do bit of research to find out that facebook is not making any money at all they are in fact making huge losses, Facebook has been looking for new ways of making money for a very long time.

To all the users who think Facebook will not be charging for their service, your wrong they will initially start charging for there services, just like any ISP's out there. It never happened before and they want to be the first to do so, and while Facebook could generate billions by charging for their site, it’s not going to take long for this to happen.

They know these sites are like drugs; addictive. A crack dealer (Facebook) will give you enough to get hooked free of charge. Once you can’t function without it, you gotta pay.

A local Fox News broadcast in USA, actually said that Facebook had plans to start charging their users in their news broadcast on the 23rd January 2010.

Well just remember PayPal. When it first hit the net their slogan was “Free and ALWAYS will be”. And we all know what happened there!!!!

  38. If this is true, why did FB change their layout today? Oh and I have a new tab under my account called "Credit Balance" and when you click on it you can buy "credits" so you can use apps and play games. When free apps and games cease to exist, I'm out!

    Comment by Laura — February 4, 2010 @ 7:49 pm

  39. Because its true. Facebook absolutely intends to start charging users. It's for the use of their games and premium features. Existing users will be left with basic ability to post and communicate.

Today's new tab confirms the plans to introduce paid features into the existing use of FB.

    Comment by Paul veverka — February 5, 2010 @ 9:21 am

  40. I don't think that people understand the cost of keeping Facebook afloat. It's easy to keep growing with capital infusion like Facebook has experienced. Once the capital runs out Facebook is going to have to prove a better, more efficient way for marketers to use their platform, as well as how to charge for it. Until they have a solid revenue model that is proven they will continue to consider charging a fee to use the platform.

    Comment by Eric B — February 6, 2010 @ 6:07 am

  41. Well done…great reply! I love facebook, it is by far my favourite website and as long as you stick to the principles like you have to date, especially the free part, it will remain my favourite! Grow up people and stop spreading that rubbish!

  46. If you look at the new facebook profile page, most people have it now. If you click on account there is an option to add credits to your facebook account, It looks like its only to play games.

    Comment by Graham — February 11, 2010 @ 7:21 pm

  47. I think whoever made that comment about facebook not caring about what is posted, I don’t agree. IF YOU SEE OFFENSIVE STUFF report it!! How will they discover it if you don’t?

I saw two fake sites showing the picture of Simon Wiesenthal, a survivor of the death camps during the holocaust, who when freed weighing 90 pounds. He volunteered to the American troops questioning Nazi’s, to help. He researched after he was released from a camp, He continued to question why he survived when so many others did not, including 90 or so members of his family. He had a photographic memory, and had memorized names, times and dates of the murders he witnessed. Everything was lost, so this decision gave him a reason to live; he promised himself he would never forget and began to research and find killers of six million jews, gypsies, poles, and other groups.

Before seeing this post, I had just seen the movie on Netflix, “I Have Never Forgotten You” about his life and work. So I was upset when I saw that the two fake sites had members waving Nazi flags, and voicing hate speech. I reported it on the site, but since I wasn’t a member of the group I didn’t have the url for the profile.. I entered my concerns three times, thinking that since I didn’t have the url it didn’t go through.. Tried to call facebook, no luck. Then, next morning, those two were gone. There is one more, that doesn’t claim to be Wiesenthal…but looks like it is based on faulty information, but I don’t know if it can be reported.

So if you see something, don’t just complain and sit on you butt, do something! Report it.

    Comment by Denise lang — February 24, 2010 @ 12:14 pm

  60. Firstly, I object to people calling me and others gullible, for thinking that Facebook may start charging. I am CERTAINLY NOT stupid, so do not make false assumptions. It is also very plausible that Facebook may start charging, so the 'threat' should not be scorned at. Whether the rumour is true or not, you yourself may have your information wrong. By saying that Facebook will not charge, you may be in fact supporting another false rumour. Therefore, I advise not to become all 'holier-than-thou'. And as for Facebook adding a filter to controll these groups; GET REAL! Only the other day I saw photos of Nazi signs, and people commenting on how Neo-Nazism is the way forward. Facebook has DEFINITELY NOT banned or deleted these disgusting messages and sites.

    Comment by Ratty — February 25, 2010 @ 8:44 am

  61. Facebook is nice but clearly not any kind of necessity. It simply is NOT worth paying for at any level. It's one thing to read about baby poop, hangovers, lost loves, new loves, and comments about mundane life events, but to pay for that nonsense is offensive. Should there ever be a charge, I'm history.

    Comment by Mike Fenton — February 27, 2010 @ 9:40 am

  62. If facebook decided to charge people for access to their site it would cut off communication between those who could pay and those who wouldn't or cant. Isnt that why they created facebook in the first place.. so you CAN connect with your friends. If it were to remain free forever eventually the entire world could enjoy it. If they were to charge people they might pay but I think someone would just respond by creating another free site to replace this one.

    Comment by Brad — March 8, 2010 @ 6:55 pm

  63. This is an unofficial resource… this guy doesnt really know. They are planning to start charing for things like premium content… on the free one, you want be able to have as many pics and what not and on the new paid premium one, you'll have more pic storage and access to digital media… stuff like new music before its out, never before seen previews, stuff like that. And the credits are stuff for like the farmville cash and reward points in farmville and mafia wars.

I used to work as an intern for the accounting dept for facebook.

    Comment by benjis — March 17, 2010 @ 11:16 pm

  64. It's no different than the flickr site. You have the option of having a "free" account, with limits on how many photos you can store and share, or paying for a "pro" account which is $24.95 a year for unlimited photo storage plus lots of other 'perks' that the free accounts dont have access to. When you really think about it, charging a monthly or an annual fee isn't so bad to use something as widespread and useful as facebook is. I'd pay. No question about it.

  68. I think Facebook is a great way to stay connected to my family bc most of them live far away. I also think it is a great way to get crap started. For instance, what you post can effect your whole life… you can get turned off of SSI and even lose your JOB bc of pics you post and things. I know a man that is one of the managers of a big pharmacutical company and he got in serious trouble just for putting pictures on here that he took at work. It looked like positive advertising to me, but they said it violated policies. I also know a woman that was knocked off her SSI she worked her enitre life and had to get on it bc she has bad depression, and they took her SSI bc she "looked happy in her profile pic.". I love facebook, but if they charge I will leave it. Take a look at the world around you… most people are in poverty at the moment, and are barely affording internet service, let alone having to pay for things like FB.

  73. I refuse to pay for facebook if theres a charge. I will definately not be on it. All my friends at work were talking about it and not one person will pay for it. Please consider the sight to just stay the same way that it is. Yes there will be some that will pay for this sight but facebook will not be a big thing if nobody pays for it.

They wont need to ever charge you because they make millions of dollars off the ad's that they have. People just make those groups so dumb people will join and talk about it just like all the other retarted groups fb has

  85. If Facebook decided to charge a service fee, I would understand and perhaps even support it. After all, it must surely cost quite a bit of money to host a social forum for millions of people. Yet, as far as I can tell, Facebook has never made such an announcement. Therefore, the "I will not use Facebook after June 10. . ." campaign is Just Another Hoax By Someone With Too Much Free Time!

  86. There are so many rumors, and I shurely don't know what to believe. But either way I'm too poor to pay more for FB.

In all of the games are monneymaking machines, so it should not be nessasairy for FB to squize more out of poor people. The populairity of FB lies in the hand of poor people. If they are kept away because they can't pay, then FB will go down faster than they can say "Ooops"

Anyhow the best thing that could happen to you all is if facebook started charging £100 a day so you all close your accounts, stop pretending you have 1000 + friends and get a life….same goes for you self absorbed sycophants on twitter….nobody is the least bit interested in whats on your tiny ant like minds so shut the fuck up and go read a book by someone who actually has something to say.

  101. Ad-supported. Facebook will not charge, ever due to all of the ads that they have placed everywhere. These groups are made by stupid people who just want to cause drama. Facebook more then likely makes in the thousands, if not millions of dollars DAILY just from ad-support. Due to how many users are on the facebook site. If they decided they wanted to charge that would make them LOSE money in the long run because they would lose so many users from the charge. People join facebook because it's a FREE social networking site.

    Comment by Kyruka — April 28, 2010 @ 12:17 am

  105. I highly doubt that Facebook makes as much profit as some seem to think And to those who say that it would be greedy to start charging, how long would you keep going to work if you didn't get paid? I wouldn't pay to use it because I don't use it that much anyway. Enough people would stop using it to make it not worth it for others to use it, until things reach a critical mass, and someone else comes along to replace it. if they were smart, they would offer an option to pay to remove ads.

    Comment by shyann — April 29, 2010 @ 6:16 pm

  108. Haha its so stupid to think they’d do that. Think about it in a rational, business sort of way.

Charging for Facebook would cause a decrease in new subscriptions significantly, cos who really wants to get a credit card out to do something they don’t even know about?

Secondly, they would loose millions upon millions of users/viewers to MySpace/Xanga/Something new.

Obviously, as you can see, Facebook would LOOSE money. They are raking in the billions through advertising. It’s completely irrational that they would make users pay.

  125. If Facebook leaders/owners are stupid enough to start charging, on top of all the quality-of-service mistakes they've been making lately, then I say let them: they'll lose users in a heartbeat, and it'll be a lot more than just the "1,000,000" that the groups want.

In all honesty, you can create your OWN website, with stable hosting and everything, for less than $6/month (less than the groups say they'll be charging). At that point all it takes is a programmer to get together some PHP/etc. to have them link up and share data, and bam; instant "facebook"-like experience, with your own rules (no 240 character limit on wall posts, fully customized privacy, etc.), and, better yet, your own domain name (i.e. JohnSmithNY.com).

  138. Although Facebook may not charge to access their site, it does appear they are getting ready to start charging people for playing popular games, such as Farmville, by purchasing credits. If you go to the account area at the top right of your Facebook screen and click on it, there is an area titled, “credit balance”. Why would a FREE site need credit balances?

There is also a group on Facebook that is titled “NO TO FACEBOOK REQUEST FOR CREDIT CARD AND MOBILE PHONE INFORMATION”. Apparently, Facebook members are starting to get pop-up verification notices from Facebook, that request credit card or mobile phone information. Mobile phones can receive charges in lieu of a credit card. People are furious and consider this an invasion of privacy.

Facebook has made this change without any notification in advance, so members of Facebook have no idea what’s going on. But, if Facebook is trying to get this information to charge members, I’m sure people will start closing their accounts and there will be a mass exodus from Facebook. Their greed to start charging people will be their downfall.
