Want to see photos that Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook, has been tagged in? Want to see his latest status updates? Now you can. The media has been obsessed with it all day, some of which have even suggested that Mark Zuckerberg must not understand the new privacy settings. They would be wrong as Zuckerberg’s new privacy settings are a statement about how people are becoming more public with their profile information.
As Barry Schnitt told Marshall Kirkpatrick of ReadWriteWeb, “becoming less private and more public is ‘a change just like it was a change in 2006 when Facebook became more than just people from colleges’.” With the new transition tool recommending that users share more information with others, it’s not surprising that Mark Zuckerberg would make a statement by sharing more information as well.
Trust me though, Mark Zuckerberg understands privacy settings. He can post all the updates he’d like and now limit the visibility of those updates to “Friends Only”, which I’m sure he’s happy to take advantage of. The real question though is whether or not users truly want to share more information about themselves. Also, if a user wants to share everything about themselves, Facebook enables them to, but it’s clear that Facebook is now forcing this “openness” onto everybody.
That’s a question that many users and privacy experts are asking, as the new privacy setting continue to roll out to all users. Facebook essentially just made the default for status updates to “Everyone” and many of those users may not grasp what that means. If you do a search on Facebook now for any phrase, you’ll now see many more results than were visible before the new privacy settings began to roll out.
We already wrote about how the volume of stream content would increase, however we’re now beginning to see the initial impact of the greater visibility. Some are suggesting that these new settings are resulting in a “privacy fiasco”, but it’s not yet clear whether the majority of users actually care one way or the other. While there was an uproar over being able to make your friends list invisible to other users, we haven’t heard about any other widespread objections to the new settings.
Do you think the new privacy settings are sufficient? Do you want to share more profile information with the rest of the world?

It appears quite a bit of his sharing was an accident - when I checked his profile this morning (and again now), I saw this message from Facebook: “Mark only shares some of his profile information with everyone.” All those photos that were revealed last night? No longer accessible by us plebes.
I’m definitely finding the new “publicly available information” to be a problem. I’m unemployed, and I keep hearing stories about employers searching Facebook and rejecting applicants about whom they can find any information they don’t like. As such, having things like fan pages suddenly show up to Everyone with no way to hide them strikes me as dangerous; I’ve now deleted all Pages to keep them from showing up in searches. I realize that I have the option of making myself totally unsearchable, but that’s an all-or-nothing fix that makes the site significantly less useful. I want old friends and such to be able to find and contact me; that’s the point of the site. What I do Not want is for people like, say, potential employers to be able to find personal information that they may not like (and, as EFF points out, even a friend list can be used to make fairly accurate and potentially damaging assumptions about people). Before this week’s updates, it was possible to strike that careful balance; after the updates, it’s no longer possible.
Clearly Unintentional - His photos are now gone from public view - only avail to friends, and friends of friends…
His photos and wall appear to have their privacy settings set to “Friends of Friends”, not “Everyone”. Nick can see the photos because he shares mutual friends. This granularity is kind of cool.
are you for real Mark, or are you one big scam:)?
If you scroll down Zuckerberg’s OPEN profile you see his actions where he LIKES a video or a picture. If you click on the video link, you get to see the video he “likes”. Does this mean that if we have a friend with an OPEN wall to everyone and they LIKE something we post, it is now exposed to the world?
No you can’t. His photos are not publicly available anymore. Seems he changed his mind.
It’s all fine if Mark Zuckerberg shares with the world every time he goes to the bathroom. But for me, I’d like my profile completely private again, thanks.
I definitely have a problem with the new “privacy” (or lack there of) settings. I don’t need every friend knowing whose statuses I like, etc.
Anyone else notice he’s a fan of his own fan page?
Before new settings i was able not to meet new people in my FB profile, but now, after changes, I can’t make, that nobody could “Add me as friend”. That to do?
Before this changes, other people (not from my friend list) could send to me only messages.
Thanks a lot.
I’m happy to know he shares but talking about Mark Zuckerberg check out the deactivation of David Appletree (JIDF). You’ll see how much FB really wants you to share and what happens if you don’t.
