New Privacy Settings Should Dramatically Increase The Volume Of Content In Facebook’s Public Stream

-Streams Photo-The most significant implication of the new privacy settings unveiled by Facebook today is that the Facebook stream, will now have substantially more content which developers can access. The result is that Facebook could soon have more stream content than Twitter, who has a tenth of the user base which Facebook has. As Chris Cox stated on today’s privacy call, “everyone is the new default” for status updates and links.

Facebook made sure to highlight that users will receive notifications throughout the transition process about the implications of making their content accessible to “Everyone”. Given that only 15 to 20 percent of users have set their privacy settings in the past, this means upwards of 280 million users will get the recommendation that they set their new privacy settings for status updates and links to “Everyone”.

While developers have had access to the public Facebook stream since April, the volume of public content has been less than the mostly public competitor: Twitter. This has put Facebook in an interesting strategic position in which many developers continue to build media products based on content being shared on Twitter. With more content possibly being shared on Facebook than Twitter, developers will soon have more of an incentive to build aggregators and other services on top of Facebook.

While Facebook has always been about sharing with friends, it will soon be much more about sharing with the world. If all goes well, Facebook will become a much more integral component of the media landscape as shared information becomes readily accessible to developers. It will be interesting to watch how the stream evolves as these new privacy settings are rolled out.

Unfortunately the new settings do not include an important privacy option: the possibility to hide our own friends list to some people or lists! I find it a big violation of my own privacy: I chose to hide my friends list from some groups of people who could just access the mutual friends, now they can see my whole list.

everybody can see the group i joined and pages i became a friend now, and my friend list (unless i hide the list so everyone including my friends cannot see)

Wow, I got a big shock today, since I have fairly strict privacy settings. I was almost lulled into a false sense of security, since the options Facebook gave me to change, were set to default to my stricter settings. I double checked all settings, and they were unchanged. BUT, then I went to “view profile as most of Facebook sees it”. To my surprise, I (viewing as a non-friend would) could see ALL friends, profile picture, all application posts to my wall (though not my friends’ posts), any other application activity, all fan pages, the box tab, etc. I still got the “Susan only shares certain information with friends”, but that is ALL they should be seeing, not all this other stuff! What the heck?? If I wasn’t so into the games, I’d probably close my account over this. MAJOR privacy violations going on!! And they are not making it clear, or giving any option to opt-out of this. Bad move, Facebook. You want to be like Twitter…guess what, some people HATE Twitter, for precisely the reason that they don’t want to share everything with the world.

Glad im not the only one that has noticed this, I have spent the last 20 minutes trying to find the option to not allow this, what a joke> I thought the new privacy settings were to make its stricter not more open. I have noticed tho that not all my friends profiles when searching from another account are revealing as much as I am, why is this!?

yes, guys, check your “view profile as most of Facebook sees it” in your private settings, it will makes you shocked (but some people can still hide, idk why)

OK..maybe it took them awhile to put everything through…now people can no longer see my wall at all, or any info on the “boxes” tab (though the tab is there). But I am not cool with the friend list thing, or having everyone see my profile picture. Luckily, they did not remove the option to keep your profile out of search results, yet. I’m sure that’s coming.

how can u do that? how to hide your profile?

I had to deactivate my account. I specifically set my account so that no one could see my friend list (not even friends).
Is it possible to do it again or not?

Hey Haj-u wrote that we can hide our friend list from everybody including friends.. how I Can do that please?

I’m equally as annoyed as everyone else on here! According to Facebook, from their Help section:

“What is considered publicly available information?
Publicly available information includes your name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks, friend list, and Pages. This information makes it easier for friends, family, and other people you know to connect with you”.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?? Facebook are now saying that your Friends list and Pages/Boxes is PUBLIC information! Facebook NEED to change this.

Go to this page, scroll to the bottom

http://www.facebook.com/help.php?page=927

and choose

“I would like to submit feedback about my updated privacy settings”.

TELL FACEBOOK THAT FRIENDS LIST AND PAGES/BOXES ARE NOT PUBLIC INFORMATION

I think the reason why other users are still able to hide their Friends lists is because they haven’t logged into Facebook and picked up the new security settings.

I remember when the page appears giving you the option to keep “Old Settings” or go with the new policy…I stupidly accepted and trusted that the new configuration would be fine for me.

At the bottom of the page, it states it’s possible to change any of these settings at anytime - thats clearly not true.

The Contact Information area within the Privacy Settings page needs the ability to prevent strangers from seeing your profile picture, friends list and pages/boxes.

For all the reasons everyone else has already stated, I’m deactivating my account until FB gives me back the control that I should have over my own information.

I DO NOT want my profile picture, my gender, my current city, my friends lists, or the pages I’m a fan of displayed to people who are NOT my friends. Although I will definitely miss FB, I will not allow people I am not friends with see my information. PERIOD.

This new Facebook privacy really sucks! It insults me, breaks against my privacy and can be harmful to me and my friends.

I really do not want everybody in Facebook, for example my potential employers, see all my friends or my profile picture! For example, my very conservative friends may not need to know all kinds of “unacceptable” friends I may have. Or left wing politician friends do not need to know that I also may go fishing with some right wing politicians! Or my mother does not need to know all my friends. Or my ex does not need to know all common friends I hang with. And, especially I don’t want people who are no even my friends to know who I am friends with!!!! Facebook broken against my privacy and has taken my power to show my affiliations to people I select. This is really outrageous.

And showing my profile picture to everyone in Facebook is just wrong! I have used profile pictures to entertain my friends. With funny, sometimes inappropriate, profile pictures that really should not be visible to anyone who does not know me because other people probably do not understand the inside jokes included in most of my profile pictures. For example, potential employers, who do not know me personally, may interpret my profile pictures harmfully and against me. Do I really have to remove all my funny pictures to be safe?! I thought that Facebook is for fun between friends!?? I want to separate my leisure time and fun with my friends from the boring and official working life. That’s why I have not accepted my colleagues to be my Facebook friends. I do not want them to see my profile pictures, friends or anything that belongs to my private life! I want back the choice to hide my profile picture and my friends from people who are not my Facebook friends!

Even Profile Picture Photo Album Privacy choice “Only me” and “None of my Networks” does not help. A person who is not my Facebook friend can still see my profile picture.

Also the “Information” shown to all friends sucks! I have 760 Facebook friends and most of them are just acquaintances. I only want my best friends to see my relationship status or my family or my political views. Those things are considered as private information here in Finland where I come from.

Much of the fun goes away if I have to clean my profile. I want back the old Facebook privacy options!

I would really like to deactivate my account until this breaking against Facebook user’s privacy has been ended. The problem with the deactivation of my account is the loosing of my administrative rights in many groups I am actively run and administer.

The only choice I care about of what can be shared and what not shared with certain people would be the videos that I can post to my profile. There is no opportunity to veto certain videos going through to, say, younger members of my family or the odd Born-again friend on their news feeds whilst showing them to friends who would really appreciate them. At the moment, if you share at all you share with all.

More and more, Facebook IS the web for many of us. I prefer to get a recommendation of a friend over canned info from a company’s page.

If you post something on FB, any friends can share it with the world. If you don’t want that video seen, don’t upload it.. better yet, think twice about being that guy in the video.

This really screwed me over. Now everyone can see my profile picture! I don’t even have my real name on there so specific people can not find me but now they can see what I look like?? I mean thats defeating the purpose! This is stupid. If I am friends with someone then all their friends can see my pic if i post on their wall. This pisses me off. I’m going to have to deactivate my account over this.

One girl explane it this way:

I’ve hidden my friend list by: clicking on the friend part placed to the left on my profile site (under my profile picture). When you click on the little pen pictogram a pop up box will give you these options:

1) ‘how many friends will you have displayed on your profile’
2) ’show my friends on my profile’
3) ‘always show these friends’

Pick: 2) I un-clicked the check mark which was checked by default by Facebook.

It’s working in sense that your friends can see ONLY mutual friends, and non friends are not able to see your friend list at all.

I guess it’s time for me to clean up my page on Facebook.

Is there any possible way to go back to the old facebook settings? I was very happy with my settings, no one could search for me unless they were already my friend, which meant no one could add me as a friend unless I sent then a request first. I need to go back to these original settings or I will be forced to deactivate my facebook. Can anyone please help?!

Kayla, I feel just like you, want my old settings back.
Don’t want people to see my profile photo or to add me as a friend. :(

Mark Zuckerberg should find something new to play with rather than messing with our privacy…..i am so freakingly horrified to see the new settings….!!!….is this the best you can come up with…Mr.Mark….??

Facebook is disgusting. I’m deleting my profile and all of my contacts. Having friends of friends and every GODDAMN stranger see my friends is something I should be able to control. I’m BEYOND upset - they have used my time for years and this is the thanks they give us back.

facebook is now becoming a F****G joke. my daughter pestered me to open her an account, to which i did only on the old privacy settings. now every c**t and F******G paedo can see her profile picture on here. facebook your a f***g joke and no wonder you’ve pis**d every F***er off on this page..you should be ashamed. stop changing the settings everytime you have a day of doing f** all. you make enough money so have a day of rest in your sad little offices there and stop pis**g people off worldwide….

ahora tambien se salto una parte importante que es… antes se podia esconder la foto cuando te buscaban. y ahora no… gracias facebook 77
