It could be worse. Girls are now “permanently connected” to Facebook, a girls’ school leader told the BBC. Rather than skipping class to go get high, girls are able to get their fix quicker via their mobile devices. One of the biggest issues according to some parents is the Honesty Box application, which lets users write anonymously on each other’s walls.

Also of concern to the parents is that their daughters may be friending strangers who appear to be nice. Over two years ago we wrote about how to stop Facebook addiction, and since then millions of more people have become addicted to the site. Ultimately it’s Facebook’s job to make sure their users visit the site more often. While I doubt that the company would like to be written off as nothing more than a distraction, that’s exactly what many parents and teachers are calling it.

As a Facebook spokeswoman told the BBC though, “It’s equally convenient to characterize TV and video game usage as time-consuming distractions.” Whether or not girls are actually technically addicted to Facebook is unknown, however given that they’re constantly visiting the site wherever they are is a pretty good sign of some sort of problem. Then again, Facebook has become a communications tool which means using the site is comparable to sending text messages to friends non-stop.

While both activities are not the most productive, the girls could be getting into a lot more trouble besides just posting on each other’s wall.
