Facebook Upgrades Their Photo Uploader Tool

This evening Chris Putnam of Facebook announced that the company is launching an upgraded version of their photo uploader, immediately available for testing as on of Facebook’s Prototype applications. Over time Facebook has had issues with their automated uploading tool, and as such they’ve been working on developing an improved version. If you want to test it out yourself, you can go install the “New Photo Uploader” immediately.

There are a number of upgrades with this new service on the technical side. The most significant is that uploading takes place in the background, which means you can navigate to anywhere on Facebook while your images are being uploaded. The entire user interface is built using HTML and CSS, and the background upload thread takes advantage of JSONP (something you’ve probably used if you’ve played around with JQuery or other JavaScript libraries extensively).

The new service should increase reliability and remove the previous dependance on Java, which was a problem for many users. For the most part, Chris Putnam’s post discusses the technical accomplishments of this new project (which makes sense considering it was posted to the Facebook Engineering page). If you’ve ever come back from a trip and want to upload a bunch of photos, you have no doubt experienced problems with the Facebook photo uploader breaking.

This new tools should resolve most of the previous problems, making uploading much more efficient. To learn more about the new tool view Chris Putnam’s note from this evening or just install the New Photo Uploader application.

It’s a lot easier to use a Facebook plug-in within your favorite photo application. Grab the Facebook LiveUpload plug-in for Windows Live Photo Gallery (http://www.codeplex.com/liveuploadfacebook). It will even take your face-tags and tag them in Facebook upon upload.

If they want to compete in the photosharing area with all the major players they should also improve the photos resolution, which right now is ridicolous!

Well this upgrade uploading tool is good. I really like it because by the help of this uploader it will be easy to upload many photos at a time.

I agree! It’s incredible that videos up to 1280 x 720 resolutions are allowed, but only 600×600 for pictures…

Facebook is already a huge photo service. I don’t think they’ll be able to handle upgrading the resolution for a little bit, though it would be nice…

From http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2009/10/13/facebook-now-has-30000-servers/
“Rothschild also shared some huge numbers associated with Facebook’s photo storage operation, which now stores 80 billion images (20 billion images, each in four sizes). Rothschild said the real challenge isn’t storage, but delivery. ”We serve up 600,000 photos a second,” he said.”

Uploading to Facebook from Picasa is the simplest way. Select your pictures, click the Facebook icon, select album, done!

My picturs won’t upload at all after this change, even using the simple uploader.

The new uploader STINKS. It is ruining pictures by compressing them too much.

Take a look at side-by-side comparisons of the new uploader versus the old uploader:
http://blog.dterryphotography.com/2009/12/facebook-is-ruining-your-pictures.html

Plus … I absolutely _HATE_ that I have to “re-navigate” back to where my pictures are every time I upload more pictures. The old uploader at least remembered where I last uploaded from and all I had to do was select the new images (sometimes the same folder, sometimes a single folder change away, but almost always nearby).

The new uploader requires that I navivate all the way from ground zero every time.

How do I install new uploader…

how to install new uploader so i can upload many picture
i dont want in the simple auploder

This is nothing but a big ‘ol piece of crap. Doesn’t work. Can no longer upload photos, even if you deactivate it and try to go back to the old way of uploading photos.

I don’t like this new facebook uploader I can’t even uploader faster. This is a piece of crap!
