Facebook Launching Android Support Next Week?

Next week Facebook will be hosting a “Mobile Mixer” press event and while few details have been provided, we’re expecting the company to announce support for the Android mobile platform. The company has been rumored to be developing an Android application and we’ve also received tips from some high placed executives that something is in the works. Next week’s event though should attract a fair amount of buzz given that the company has held off for so long to release support.

Facebook has a large number of users who use their mobile device as the default resource for accessing the rapidly growing social platform. Additionally, the company is encouraging users to take advantage of the numerous mobile features in order to combat Twitter’s increasing traction. While I’ve suggested that the company is trying to kill the ongoing battle between the two companies as perceived by the media, there is still fierce competition for talent as well as users’ attention.

Facebook needs to be easily accessible on all mobile devices if they are going to become the largest digital identity provider on the web and next week’s press event is a signal that the company is focused on increasing their mobile presence. While there is no guarantee that the Facebook Android application will launch next week (September 8th), I would bet heavily that it will.

While I don’t currently use the Android platform and some are suggesting that the platform simply doesn’t perform, it’s rapidly gaining significant market share, making it impossible to ignore. Do you use an Android enabled device? Are you looking forward to the new application?

Update
I should clarify that this is Facebook for Android that was developed in conjunction with Google. This is not developed completely in house as the iPhone app was.

There are over a million G1 and another million G2/myTouch/Magic devices on the market. It’s a platform worthy of Facebook’s attention.

We’re just starting to see the power of Facebook Connect for iPhone. If Facebook wants to truly be open and ubiquitous, it will need to be on multiple mobile platforms.

Sounds great, really looking forward to hearing what comes out of the Mobile Mixer press event

What exactly is an android phone?

Hurry up Facebook! You should have done this long ago.

i’m so disappointed that it’s taking them that long, hopfully i’ll be worth the wait.

@ Mike Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google, and its a free-software and open source license.

Great news! Android is fast developing and with Facebook support it will surely grow its roots stronger into the mobile market.

i hope it comes out next week.. the current apps for facebook/androids suck. i also hope its worth the wait

Android rocks… I love my HTC Magic phone, but am looking forward to the new motorola android phones….

Bring on facebook app…..

Hopefully this app will succeed where other user developed apps have failed. I am sick and tired of using the Facebook mobile site on my G1. Hope this happens soon!

I love my Android G1. I don’t know why anyone would say the platform doesn’t perform. I’ve used Windows Mobile and hated it. I was going to get an iphone but, I cannot stand AT&T. That forced me to find other options. Luckily I found my android phone and everything fell into place. If you have a google account and everything simply synced when I logged into the phone. Loves it!

That being said, I can’t wait for the facebook app to appear. That’s the only weak spot that effects me.

Well everyone who is using the Andriod Plateform, will going to love to have Facebook….

That link doesn’t have anything to do with the Android mobile platform “not performing.” It’s about current problems with the Android market.

I have been waiting for an official facebook app for the android for a long time, it already has a “myspace mobile app”, but I do not use myspace…I hope they launch it on September 8th, and it is available in the market, which by the way is tomorrow! Cross your fingers…

Still waiting… Let’s see what happens when the US wake up ;)

Nothing yet!

Good call. To the day.

Hi, The Facebook and MySpace is now available in android?
