Facebook Automatically Hides Public Profile Feed Items From Your Feed

-Hidden Feed Dialog Screenshot-Since the launch of Facebook’s redesign, users have been filing their complaints about the new layout. Whether it’s problem’s with Facebook’s “real-time” news feed or issues with public profile feed updates not showing up in users’ feeds, we’ve been receiving a ton of feedback. This morning, Dominic Grant brought to our attention an issue with Public Profiles being hid by default. Those public profiles (previously called “pages”) that you subscribed to before the change, may not be showing up in your feed and we’ve found out why.

When the new layout went live, Facebook automatically determined which profiles we wanted to have displayed in our feeds. Interestingly, a large portion of public profiles were hidden. For me, 28 out of the 69 companies I had become a fan of, no longer had access to my feed. Others have complained that a larger portion of their public profiles had been removed.

So what determines which pages are displayed? Unfortunately I don’t know yet but I’ve reached out to Facebook for clarification and will update this post as soon as I find out. There are also users included under “hidden friends” which I’m guessing have been populated based on your privacy settings. It doesn’t make much sense to automatically add a large portion of public profiles to this list though.

If you’ve noticed that a large number of the status updates you are posting haven’t made it to users’ feeds, this is most likely the reason why. I found that a large number of the public profiles I was actually interested in, had been placed in this list. Ultimately, all new pages that you have subscribed to will automatically be able to post to your feed.

My guess is that feed permissions were based on when you became a fan of each individual brand. Are you noticing problems with reaching users’ feeds?

YES!!! I have been trying to get an answer from Facebook or anyone who would listen as to why my company’s status updates aren’t showing up in my fan’s newsfeed. THANK YOU! I felt like I was talking to a wall. Where do you find the list of pages hidden from your newsfeed as shown above?

Nick,

I was actually going to contact you about this as i came across this about a week ago. I noticed that only 2 of my pages were coming through my feed even when the others had their status updated.

I even tried to unpublish my page and then republish it, but to no avail. One way it did come into my feed was if I was to stop becoming a fan and then re becoming a fan, which would reset it.

I then found the show hidden friends part down the bottom right and found over 60 pages i had become a fan of were hidden!

It is really disappointing that facebook would do this, as it totally affects the use of facebook for some companies.

If it’s possible, I hope you can get it through to facebook to make all pages visible in the news feed.

I have all public profiles I am fan of hidden, except Allfacebook.com.

Is there a way to add these newsfeeds? Is there a way to ensure my updates are going on fan’s newsfeeds?

I’ve have noticed, however, that if you are a page admin you won’t see any status updates in your own personal newsfeeds. I had to test it to confirm.

Nick,

Good stuff. Thanks.

It may not longer be the case (i.e., the bug may have been fixed), but I found last week that old preferences were screwing up which Friends were seen on the News Feed. No matter how many times I added them to the News Feed, the returned to the list of hidden Friends. This was based on selections in the old, News Feed “control panel.

Fortunately, the old control panel is still accessible on http://www.new.facebook.com/feed_prefs.php . To address this bug, I went to the old slider page and deleted the names of friends I listed for “More About These Friends” and “Less About These Friends”. Then, I clicked the “Reset All” button to get the little faders to line up in the middle.

Viola! I was not able to use the new interface to choose whom to see and whom to hide.

Thanks for this post, Nick. I would say about half of my pages were not on my news feed list as well. Crazy.

In your post you mentioned “There are also users included under “hidden friends” which I’m guessing have been populated based on your privacy settings.”

The friends that are “hidden friends” are those friends you previously put on the “less about these friends” from the old feed model that Neil Glassman referenced in his post.

How do you find this Hidden from Newsfeed control? I can’t find it. Please help!

I guess the solution then is to send a fan update, explaining to fans how to unhide our news feeds, if they choose to do so.

I am glad to hear about this because we had been averaging 100 new fans per week, driven by once a week updates, and since Facebook switched over this has dropped to only 20 fans per week. I kept waiting around thinking eventually this feature would kick in, since I am getting Facebook feeds and a few others.

Thanks for pointing this out. I noticed all of the pages I’m a fan of being in the hidden friends section. This is disturbing to a public profile admin because the biggest win with the new design was status updates. If this is the way things will be going forward then our fans will have to essentially opt into seeing status updates, but who’s gonna tell them to look in the hidden friends section to do so?

Dana, as a page admin you can see your page’s status updates if you click on the public profile filter, but you’re right they don’t seem to show up in the default news feed filter.

thanks for the news, but how rediculous is this!

Thank you so much for this article. I didn’t even realize I was missing so much. Almost all of the pages I am a fan of were not showing up and as a result, I was missing some pretty important stuff.

I think this has to do with the fact that Facebook was only going to include premium partners in the newsfeed but I haven’t confirmed this or cross referenced a list of who is included etc.

I noticed that several of the pages I administer were not showing up in feeds. One thing they ALL have in common is they were pages that were rolled over from the fanpage format. It seems that rolling the pages over somehow defaults them to be hidden from updates, thus rendering them completely useless, as no average FB user will know to activate updates for each page. I’m so pissed right now…

It would be great if you actually pointed out where to find this control panel.. thanks.

So…. What’s the point of these new fan pages then? I’ve been for the redesign ever since it was announced, but it makes absolutely no sense to convert Pages to be centered on status updates, and then not deliver those status updates to fans.

Anyone notice how the “Update All Fans” on your Pages is now near worthless? The messages go to your Inbox, but in the last “Updates” tab.

Facebook Pages may now have more hype and less ROI than Twitter.

For those looking to find the menu described in the post. The only way I’ve been able to get at it is to actually “hide” an item in your existing news feed. Facebook will them prompt you with a message that has a link to the menu where you can “unhide” both friends and public pages.

Personally, I was also surprised at just how many people were hidden in my menu. I think the old messaging of “show fewer updates” turned into “hidden” in the new layout.

Okay I figured it out - scroll all the way down to the bottom of your news feed, and you’ll see a link that says “Hidden Friends.”

However, I just sent our fan base an update, describing how to unhide us, and much to my chagrin, there is no notification that an update has come into the Update portion of the inbox!!

Very klugey, Facebook.

Perfect, thanks Dustin!!

To find the hidden public profiles, scroll to the bottom of your newsfeed and click on “See Hidden Friends.” In the pop-up box that appears, click on “Public Profiles.” All of the Public Profiles I added were hidden except for the New York Times.

Considering the way that Facebook marketed the new setup as a boon for companies creating public profiles, this seems like a horrible bit of bait and switch.

Thanks for finding this (have been going crazy wondering where this great new FB feature was).

I seem to have about 3 pages that were showing and all the rest of mine were hidden.

FB s/fix this as this is what their docs on the new public/fan pages explicitly states as a benefit.

UPDATE
——–

As i’m in Australia I just got this message at the top of my news feed a bit earlier than most.

Pages are now a part of News Feed

From now on, posts from Pages you are a fan of will show up in your News Feed. You can hide their posts by clicking the ‘x’ in the top right corner of the post. If you would like to see posts from Pages you connected to in the past, click here.

So it looks as though they waited just a while so that people got used to the new profile first before bombarding them with page updates.

Great timing of the article though!

Ay yi yi, facebook is getting too complex. Good thing we have a forum like this to sort some of its complexity out. Nice work Neil Glassman for keeping that old cp link. I’ve been looking all over for it. Guess I need to start keeping an archive and screenshots of things on facebook.

Wow..Your blog is wonderful. Thanks for the info

I think it’s pretty ironic that FB doesn’t want to bombard us with Page updates to fans, but they don’t seem to have a problem with the 15 quizzes, 8 Peeps and assorted other gift junk generated by friends that are “spamming” my home page this morning since the big “change”…

It’s ridiculous…and it’s killing some fan Pages.

I’ve been a big supporter of FB pages and their ROI for small businesses, but as they’ve now deystroyed all of the audience that these small businesses have fought to build up, I think a class action law suit is in order!

It is possible that Facebook only delayed showing page posts in the feed so as not to inundate people with these posts (though my suspicion is that it was just a big goof). But the problem with the notice that they’ve put on user’s home pages now is that is seems to *still require that users manually unhide our pages.*

Note the wording: “If you would like to see posts from Pages you connected to in the past, click here.” Clicking the link brings up the list of pages that are *still hidden.* So unless users realize that they need to click that link and manually unhide us — our page posts are still never going to show up.

So Facebook seems to have offered a “solution” to their glitch/bad-idea — but it’s a really poor one.

I hid some friends so I could find a particular post. My page was too cluttered. Now I can not retrieve them. Absolutely nothing happens when I click on add to news feed! And none of my public profiles comes through at all, nor does anything happen when I click on adding them to my newsfeed.

… hem.. i clicked hide and now i don’t have the connection to “hide/unhide” selectio for pages view in NewsFeed … where is the option? someone can post the link? tnx!!

Facebook User - March 26th, 2009 at 5:17 pm

At the bottom of the feed, there’s a button that says “Show Hidden Friends”. You can restore hidden pages from here.

I have the opposite request: How do I HIDE FRIENDS? I previously had a list of friends to hide, another list to push forward. As of today - the hidden friends are again clogging my page with dozens of daily posts and I am unable to find the button that allows me to weight the list. The privacy settings don’t have an option to weight access to my news feed. Any suggestions?

finally, thanks to you I found the sollution for this anoying problem! I have a fanpage as well and I couldn’t figure out how to get updates and messages on the newsfeed!

Robert Holshouser - May 6th, 2009 at 11:47 am

I don’t have a “Show Hidden Friends” link at the bottom — can anybody give me more direction on how to find that?

Hi there,

Great post! I was desperate too!.

I understand these problems with previous and old pages before redesign… BUT I also have this problem creating a NEW fan page. I do that, some of my friends joins but any of them receive my wall/links updates. Anyone could help me?

Thanks!

My problem is similar, but apparently different. I used to have a list of Pages in my profile, of all the pages I am a fan of. Never mind that updates don’t show up in my newsfeed, I don’t even have a Pages section in my profile anymore. This changed about a week ago, and i have no idea how to fix it :(

DITTO here.

NO More PAGES that i am a fan of in my PROFILE.
(listed at the bottom of the info tab)

WTH?

Heureka.

Great article! I’ve just recently created a fan page for my new small business, and have a small group of 25 fans, so I don’t have the legacy issue of being converted from before, but I’m still not seeing fan page updates on people’s news feeds.

I’ve asked a few fans to check their “hidden friends/pages” but my page is not there. Is there a minimum number of fans you need to have before Facebook starts automatically posting your page updates to your fans’ news feeds? Would it having anything to do with the fact that my page is related to an actual company, instead of a music group / non-profit / tv-show, etc?

Appreciate any insights anyone might have.

ditto Jon’s post: new page, fewer than 50 fans, no wall posts showing in fans’s news feeds. not the legacy issue - so what is it? I don’t want to start any fan-building campaigns until I know that I can reach fans with updates!

I posted a query on facebook, but don’t think I’ll get a response before the end of the year.

HELP!

When the edit window pops up it ALWAYS cuts off the right hand corner where the scroll buttons are located. I THEREFORE CANNOT SCROLL UP OR DOWN TO SEE THE ENTIRE LIST. How can I extend the window to the right?

The problem is that Facebook have auto-capped the number of feeds every user can see in their home feed. Mine was capped at 250, when I increased this (EDIT OPTIONS at foot of Feed on HomePage) to 5000, I saw every ‘Freinds’ updates AND my updates to my Fanpage Wall, which I couldn’t see previously.

Surely the default should be to see all and THEN let each user customise it down? The opposite is a nightmare!
