Following yesterday’s news that Mark Zuckerberg had joined Twitter, Mark began following hundreds of followers this afternoon. In just over a day, Mark attracted over 5,000 followers on Twitter, more than have become fans of him on Facebook. So why would Mark suddenly become so active on the site? Eric Eldon speculates that one reason may be that they’ve revisited the negotiating table with Twitter and have successfully agreed upon a rational valuation.
A counter argument to this speculative notion is that Mark is trying out what it’s like to use a completely open communication channel as Facebook will soon become just as open. As Eric Eldon also notes, David Recordon recently suggested that the site will soon be much more open and Mark Zuckerberg decided to confirm that via a public Tweet, “@daveman692 You’re not crazy :)”.
Over the coming weeks we will see many more announcements by Facebook which illustrates this continuing trend toward openness. All of this is in theory a movement toward a completely open system in which users can still control what information is public and which information is private. Mark also further emphasized the future openness via this statement:

While Chris Cox jokingly stated that you could now follow as many people as you want on Facebook in a manner similar to Twitter last week, many interpreted it as a feature that will be live in a matter of days. While the timeframe may have been somewhat confusing, it’s clear that this will soon become a reality.
So is this leading toward an eventual merging of the two companies? Not necessarily. If Facebook is serious about taking openness to the next stage, there may soon be less of a reason to use Twitter.

Both are pretty hot at the moment, it might make it easier if they become one (most likely facebook taking over Twitter). I think Fb is in a tough spot because they build fb around the idea of privacy and what not, but the cool trend right now is transparency. Google CEO Eric described the advantages of openness well in his recent interview with Charlie Rose.

For me I certainly can’t wait to see what this move signals for Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook, especially as Google as also registered at Twitter (http://twitter.com/google), a little mini bidding war in 140 characters or less
There are so many ways this move could take either company on Twitter, but one of them will surely purchase in the next couple of months
I wonder what kind of privacy issues he considered when making the decision of making Facebook open, twitter style. It must have been a very difficult decision to make. Twitter only have a little bit of your information there. Facebook has our entire lives in it.
Incidentally, it is funny that Twitter has just reached its critical mass (or at least it seems to me they just did). For some bizarre reason, I always join sites within a month of them reaching critical mass. I joined both Facebook and YouTube and within a month I saw them on the news for the first time. Very odd….

Good Onya, Mark! As they say: If you can’t beat them, You better join them! Last year Facebook tried take over Twitter for $500M. Twitter was offered $100M cash and $400M worth of Facebook stock. Well, at least Mark now has his own Twitter account!
Seems to me that the end result will be to have Facebook retain its privacy controls with the option of using it Twitter-like. I’ve got no problems with that, and I’d welcome having one less account to keep track of.
