It’s Official, Tweetdeck Becomes SocialDeck With Facebook Integration

-SocialDeck Icon-Today Tweetdeck will officially announce integration via Facebook Connect, bringing streaming Facebook status updates directly to your desktop. Just last week I suggested that this will soon become a reality. Little did I know how quickly this would actually take place. One of the largest hurdles to developing streaming status services in the past was a delay in response time to status.get API calls.

Fortunately, Facebook has upgraded their API and now functionality similar to Twitter is no longer just theory. Facebook is working on opening up their platform increasingly and this is just one step in the process. As I’ve been emphasizing over the past few weeks, this is part of a greater movement and in the coming weeks there are many more things to come.

Facebook clearly wants to become a platform for real-time communication and sharing among individuals and this new service will most definitely help further that goal. While I don’t have access to the new version of Tweetdeck, it should be available for download by the end of the day. This is truly a huge step for Facebook as the first widespread desktop applications are just beginning to proliferate.

Currently Tweetdeck is still keeping their name, but as the title suggests, they may want to consider changing that name over the next few days. SocialDeck is just one suggestions but perhaps eventually it will become full fledged Facedeck as I previously suggested. This is exciting news and I’m looking forward to the new applications that roll out over the coming weeks.

Will you be downloading the new version of Tweetdeck when it’s released later today?

“Will you be downloading the new version of Tweetdeck when it’s released later today?”

Without a doubt.

Thanks Nick. Many people and friends I know do not understand the impact and implications of the latest Facebook changes, and are uncomfortable with them. Can you write a post that explains the new Facebook in very basic terms, also commenting on how best to use and take advantage of the new changes?
Thanks
Kevin

Great info. Nick, thanks for sharing- I’ll be adding facebook connect right away. I watched Mark Zuckerberg on Oprah last Friday - should be interesting to see where this all goes!
Thanks,
Kim Doyal

This makes a lot of sense. Especially after Mark Zuckerberg tweeted about how he liked TweetDeck.

This new change will help cross-sell each of Facebook and Twitter to the other’s service. It will help everyone who uses any of these services. I look forward to using it.

Neat application. Just downloaded it and it’s nice to have. I was and still using Tumblr as some kind of Twitter aggregator so hope they also support facebook statuses soon.

I think I see a race to get on Twitter’s good graces. Who will end up with them in their pocket is only a mystery.

Wow that happened fast. I will definitely be using it and my twitter stream may suffer because of it. Download Facedeck or Zuckerberg will deck you in the face! Thanks for the heads up, Nick.

This is great news for entrepreneurs who use both Twitter and Facebook. I meet with other Entrepreneurs for the first time on Twitter (using the power of my Tweetdeck of course!) and we take the conversation off to Facebook to further develop the relationship. So, I’m looking forward to more goodness to come!

I don’t get what fb is doing… the “old” version had a live feed that was updating in real-time and had info like xyz and abc are now friends, abc has joined this group, in addition to status messages. The new version is not updating in real time and seems to be focused mostly on status messages.

Thanks Nick. I think this is pretty important, if only for symbolism. There are so many Twitter clones where people are talking (just search Twitter for ‘Plurk’!) that more integration is necessary for more serious connecting and/or data mining.

I have many places where my Twitter and Facebook connections don’t overlap. This just might get me to start using TweetDeck again.

hmm. Interesting. TD’s a good app. I’ll be interested in seeing the new changes. This makes more sense out of the Facebook changes, but that new FB layout is highly unpopular.

This could be considered the 2nd Application of this nature by launch of a preview/beta (Status Update Adobe Air applications) but is first to actually merge/integrate fully.

Twhirl is integrating Facebook as well “in the next week or so” and the developers of Twhirl (Seesmic) has had a AdobeAir ‘Preview’ called Seesmic for Facebook since SXSW which both Facebook fan websites ‘missed’ with all the Iphone application update news but thanks to Mashable i did try it out.

*links available on request as do not want to see seen as promoting a service by download link*

I downloaded the beta version this morning. Seems to work great. Anything to help open up Facebook is a positive. Now I am hearing that privacy policies are being relaxed.

Good news for marketers.

DO NOT WANT! DO NOT WANT!

I for one, do not like the new facebook format. I do not like how it is so much like Twitter now, all status updates and not much else. A friend sent another friend numerous “gifts” So right there, all these gifts he sent, as well as the pictures of them, took up the whole page!
I use Twitter, and love it, but I don’t want my facebook to turn into Twitter.

I’m **still** waiting for Tweetdeck to integrate some kind of font size adjustment setting. I’m sorry, but my eyes are just not able to read pt size 7 or whatever it works out to, and no, I’m not going to change the monitor resolution for everything just to make Tweetdeck do what I wish it would.

So no, integration w/FB is NOT the key to getting me to adopt this most-popular Twitter app.

Good news and yes I will be downlosding facedeck soon!

I want SocialDeck (TweetDeck) to fix its memory leaks!

Have any beta users noticed any improvements in performance? I’m afraid that Facebook integration will HURT SocialDeck (TweetDeck) performance!

I’ll be excited when I can use Tweetdeck to update my Status on my Fan Page. Any ideas when that will happen?

tweetdeck is my face to twitter and coming from the facebook world, I like the connect integration on tweetdeck.

Blogged about it here - http://ow.ly/10Nu

I do not like the new changes Facebook is making. If I wanted to use Twitter, I would have joined it. I am pretty much into all this Web 2.0 stuff, but Twitter is certainly one of the biggest waist of time ever. I do not want status updates all the time, I not interested in all this “live” buzz. I know many people who are pissed of by the changes and I certainly hope Facebook people come back to their minds. Apart from the functionality the new homepage is just ugly. Font size has increased, so less information is show. Like they assume we all need glasses. They twitter-like pictures, which are now also on the profile page are just ugly.

I do understand what Facebook wants too archieve

Feedalizr integrated Twitter and Facebook a while ago. I’ve experimented a little with it; like any Twitter app, it’s got pluses and minuses. My problem with Tweetdeck is that it’s a resource hog. Plus, as large as the interface is, I may as well just use a browser-based social media interface.

I was really bothered to find my wall to wall messages are no longer private!!!!!! What is the purpose of it then? I now have to email to speak one to one. I don’t get it at all. I don’t like the way things look either. If I want Twitter I’ll get it…I wanted what Facebook offered and now its something else.

Will you be downloading the new version of Tweetdeck when it’s released later today?

Duh:)
