Moments ago I wrote about the ability to hide applications now but it appears that Facebook has actually pushed out all the new changes to their homepage. The requests have now been added to the top right, the applications have been merged with friend lists on the left hand side, there is now the ability to create new friends lists, and there is also the ability to hide applications.
Only two weeks after users lashed out for changing the design, Facebook is making subtle changes so that the user experience is improved. One thing they aren’t doing: going back to the old design. As users continue to provide feedback, Facebook will continue to make updates, and these are just a few of those updates.
The events and birthdays have also now been moved below the highlights and “People You May Know” has been moved above highlights. Also interesting is that after removing an application from the feed it doesn’t appear that you can put it back. Facebook has continued to make changes and some of them appear to be effecting their JavaScript as well, as many users have been reporting buggy functionality in the interface over the past few hours.
Update
It appears as though the new design was pushed live and then brought back after there was some extremely buggy functionality. Perhaps we’ve been given a taste of what’s to come. We’ll let you know when the new homepage is turned back on. And it’s back! We’ll stop posting about this and let you go check out the new functionality.

not sure why, but they moved the events and birthdays to underneath the highlights. i liked it much better above it
They need to have a better system when it comes to feedbacks, design updates and the like. Perhaps use uservoice or getsatisfaction or if they really have to reinvent the wheel, create their own.
The “Highlights” section strikes me as almost completely useless, particularly when so little of it ever changes. Get rid of it, or else put it below the “Events” section of birthdays and events, which is much more important on a cursory glance at the page.
now if they would only move events/birthdays back up above highlights!!
And still no friend stories. Am I crazy or is who is becoming friends with who one of the most important things?
Shit’s gonna hit the fan when people realize that the events section has moeved below the highlights…
I noticed there’s a “+create” below the filter on the left side of the homepage, is that new as well?
Wait, so they listen to user feedback, but Facebook “doesn’t listen to customers?”
Sounds like really shitty customer service and not a business strategy.
it didn’t change back for me! It was only different for about 15 minutes
correction, every time i refresh the page, it switches between old and new
If they’d just give me back the old friend/relationship/group updates, I’d live with the rest. I don’t know why they seem resistant to that. It makes no sense.
And, dear heavens, show us our most recent status update right at the top of the home page. Even the desperate-to-be-imitated Twitter does that.
I hope one of their rolling fixes deal with the way pages (public profiles) are handled. I recently started a page which now has a small but steadily growing fanbase. My strategy had twoprongs, both now broken by these changes:
–I was counting on the viral nature of facebook to build the fanbase (users no longer see when friends add pages)
–I was using targetted updates to inform fans of useful local info (updates are hidden behind a tab in the inbox -useless)
–I was using wall posts for shorter timely bits to keep it fresh (when turned on, this is sent to all fan’s feed- pretty spammy. I’d turn my own page off!)
These changes are killing me!
it’s stupid in my opinion. if they made it some what like our profile customization was back before the last BIG change then it would be great. if i could click and drag my events above the highlights i think i would be somewhat happy with the home page as it is now.
letting users modify their page within a certain degree of limitability would probably catapult facebook into the lead when it comes to their race between themselves and twitter.
JD nailed it, it makes absolutely no sense to hide the friend updates. What is the point of not showing who became friends with who? That’s what the site is all about.
I think they should make it like iGoogle, then they could prevent this whole mess about the UI. You would change is as you wish
It’s been switching back and forth for me, but even with the ‘new’ layout, I still don’t have the ability to block particular applications from showing up in my feed (namely livingsocial), just people. Is this part of the new layout something they’re rolling out gradually?
This is a start. But i wish facebook would:
1. BRING BACK the old “Live Feed” which AUTOMATICALLY REFESHES with ALL the stories from friends (especially who’s friending who). I think this was what made facebook the unique and exciting experience that it was. Without it, the whole thing just feels like a drag. Where before I used to spend hours on end just clicking here and there, now I log in and after 5 or so minutes find myself wanting to log out already.
2. BRING BACK the option to edit posts on the profile page to display them as one-liners, brief descriptions, or full posts. Right now it’s just “Delete”.
3. Move EVENTS up and closer to REQUESTS and bring down People You May Know closer to Find Friends. This makes better sense.
I don’t see the ability to hide applications. Can some one post a better screen shot?
I don’t have the hide apps ability either. Perhaps they took it down to refine it.
I just want my friend notifications back. What is so hard about understanding how important that is to this site???
the attempt 2 news feed i feel is stupid as almost nowt is now real time so whenever auto refresh is added it absolute junk to be called a in real time service in it current attempt 2 stance (need more work!).
personally they should of kept attempt 1 (whatever to the minority vocal ‘i want as i want’ brigade wants). They should of really just added the create friend list improvement and the hide application stories option to hide news feed (such as user defined ‘quizzes’ stories normally referred as to spamming or news feed hogging) as the news feed has become a turn off in its current attempt 2 stance as i was a fan of the real time although did want hide stories by application filtering! so please revert back and add the additions to that design
considering alot of the ‘change haters’ were only moaning about news feed spamming and everything else which where on homepage been there for ages somewhere and i sure people can take a few moments to look around the homepage.
How about add everything to news feed (relationships, all the application stories, friends acceptance, photos and videos, likes amongst all the other things) then add the create friend list on homepage feature and new hide options (the 2 hide options - hide person and hide application types) so the user can make there OWN choices of what they do and do not want to be informed about so if they do not want an application telling them something then hide it at there OWN choice!
I not American but those that anti change must also like everything as it as and anti improvement and anti Obama. Change is done with the HOPE something IMPROVES!
Also something that might be a good idea is to have toogle filters of ‘Application Stories Only’ (the apps), ‘Profile Stories’ (relationship, friends, photos, events and such like) and ‘All’
stick these filters on both profiles (Profile, Public Pages) and homepage may it be the whole words in ‘Just Fans’ on Pages style, A icon or App Pro All type so a person can be shown like twitter (Profile stories), just the applications or the whole social activity of a user but maybe i underestimating quite a few people.
If we get stuck with something more resembling “Attempt 2″ i agree with you Marcus - March 26th, 2009 at 6:05 am with your suggestion 3 that in ‘attempt 2′ there is right column improvements which should be made but not fully with suggestions 1 and 2 as it seems Facebook has a set vision for these if i get what your ideas/suggestions are clearly. Idea 2: Facebook vision do seem to scale down the types of stories to likely 1 type (2 being lucky) but edit might be nice to give user the choice of short stories (Newsfeed ‘Real time’) or one liners (recent activity* - * a must is to reinstate at least the time to Recent Activity and bring back ‘by date’ grouping).
With idea 1 it do sound like the CNN Facebook live feed implementation Facebook Connect tool and this is still will be in use for events although not full time at Facebook discretion but AllFacebook usually knows if Facebook and a third party will have this (maybe the EU Elections - although i not into politics myself)
This is still crap. I’m missing birthdays because the damn things are shoved down to the end of the utterly useless right sidebar’s application/advertising/everythingelseyoudon’tcare about behemoth.
*fume*
I’m just pissed at the new layout because it increasingly is becoming cluttered with USELESS information and looks more like a huge forum thread rather than a network site.
And whose genius idea was it to move the Events section under the pointless highlights bar? I’ve missed so many important things, especially birthdays, because of this ridiculously thoughtless move.
For everyone who misses seeing your friend’s birthdays towards the top of the home page, I use this to fix it:
