Video of Today’s Facebook Pages and Homepage Announcement

-Facebook Friend Categories-Earlier today I recorded the Facebook webcast to post later. I’ve embedded the full feed below. It cuts in about a minute after it started and you’ll also notice that my inbox pops up a couple times. It was because I just learned how to use my new screen recording tool but the full audio is there up until they begin taking questions from the audience.

Also, below are links to a number of the current pages that have switched to the new design:

Hi Nick,

As much as I like the updates to the newly designed Facebook pages, but I’m very unhappy with the removal of FBML and the ability to incorporate customized graphics (and video via FLV). Isn’t this a big concern??

Companies like Apple, Dell, (the list goes on and on) have spent a significant amount of time building out their facebook pages, leveraging FBML by using customized images, swfs, and even the ability to integrate forms with external PHP scripts. Once Facebook pages all migrate to their new system, these companies will automatically lose all that content? Won’t that cause an uproar?

Maybe I’m missing something here. Thoughts?

Any idea when the “vanity” url feature will be available to everyone beyond the launch partners listed above?

I work at a University as a Web Admin and recieved the message below when coming into work this morning and updating our University Facebook Fan Page. Now, instead of having a nice “one-pager” of info about our University, visitors will have to “click-around” for info. If fan pages are just going to be profiles, then why would you provide fan pages in the first place? The least you guys could do is provide an option for how organizations want their fan pages to render. Heck, at least sync the content between pages and profiles if you are going to make them look and act exactly alike. I still think this a bad, redundant idea, which will just negate the uniqueness of Fan Pages and turn off visitors. We only have a small window of opportunity to connect with prospective students, alumni, etc. And now you’ve made that window into a bunch of even smaller, separate windows. It really seems like Facebook is contiuously having trouble “leaving well-enough alone.” Careful, or else Myspace demise awaits thee.

“Pages are now more like profiles. Update your Page now.
Pages now look and behave more like user profiles. You can more easily publish content to your Page’s Wall and gain distribution through News Feed. Learn about how to take advantage of the new features.

Right now, your fans are still seeing the old version of your Page. Take advantage of this opportunity to edit your Page before it gets automatically republished, which will happen soon. As soon as your Page is edited and ready, republish it.”

Our page has also switched over to the new design:

My page is totally hosed up in IE7 after doing the “republish” thing. Any idea why?

Thanks!

You can change the way the new pages render. Select the “settings” button just above your new wall, and you can select which tab users see first. Select “boxes” if want users to see the videos and FBML you placed on your page before.

Ty:

I tried your advice to no avail. This is what I’m seeing when I view my fan page in IE7:

Seems to display fine in Mozilla and Google Chrome.
