comScore released a study today which found that Facebook traffic for the past year ending in June, tripled from 172,000 visitors to 538,000. While Facebook has half the traffic of MySpace and a small fraction of Mixi, the leading Japanese social network (which attracted 56 million visitors in the same period), it is rapidly catching up. As many in the industry have suggested, the battle for social network users in Asia is far from over. This study only confirms initial assertions.
Another interesting finding from this study is that Orkut has a relatively dominant position in Japan in comparison to MySpace and Facebook. Facebook’s launch of the Japanese version of the site has most definitely contributed to the growth. If Facebook’s growth rate continues, we could see the company rapidly become one of the dominant players is Japan. They still have a ways to go before they catch up to Mixi.jp though.
It will be interesting to see if Facebook can duplicate this growth in other countries throughout Asia.
