It appears that Facebook may be adding another advertisement to their site under the new design. In the process of debugging an application on Facebook, Zvi Band stumbled across an interesting component found by leveraging Firebug’s element inspector. There is a div marked as “footer_ad” at the bottom of the page. Currently the size of the div does not appear to be any standard advertisement size though.
Does this mean that Facebook is definitely putting advertisements in the footer? Not necessarily but it could be a good indication of what’s to come. The addition of one advertisement on the site could increase Facebook’s revenue substantially. The company definitely wants to avoid cluttering the site with advertisements though, otherwise they could end up looking like MySpace, where there are ads that take up half the site.
Currently, Facebook’s design remains much cleaner than MySpace, but adding more advertising could certainly make users cry foul. Then again, Facebook’s gotta pay the bill, right?

On the old version of Facebook there was an odd not in the bottom bar that said something to the effect of, “I will figure out something to put there.” So I always expect an advertisment there at some point even if it is just a link like at the top of my gmail messages.
