Where’s the New Profile?
Posted by Nick O'Neill on July 17th, 2008 12:14 PMOn Tuesday evening Facebook announced that users would begin seeing the new profile within 24 hours. They also gave warning to developers to be prepared. More than 24 hours have passed by and the new profile has still not launched. While Facebook initially suggested that the profile would launch sometime this week, the notification to developers the other night made it seem like a profile update was imminent.
Developers are still waiting to see how their applications are effected by the new opt-in design. Facebook is clearly busy with a number of projects that they hope to launch at next week’s f8 but the profile redesign is clearly one of the most important changes for Facebook developers in months. We are expecting the profile to go live today but as of now there is no word on when the change is finally happening.
Developers simply need to stand by and wait for Facebook to throw the switch!

As a regular Facebook user, I have been looking forward to the release. I hope that they stay to there word and release a “beta” this week. The beta should be to all users, but on a opt in schedule as to not overload the servers.
But, please facebook give me a date or time…

Nick, they are rolling it out the same way they rolled out chat… slowly, and to more users each day. It's not like they are flipping a switch. It is happening on a slow opt-in basis. Late, yes, but as planned.

Facebook has far too many changes on the go and they can't make up their minds as to what they really want. Facebook needs to focus their attention on one project and see it through to completion. Users are getting anxious and developers are getting frustrated.
I've checked out the developer preview and half the options don't work. The Application pulldown listing of all apps only refreshes the screen and same with the Inbox, the plus tab to find more applications doesn't do anything and clicking on any of the applications you do have takes you to the normal site. Some applications show you a note that says there is nothing in the application.
C'mon Facebook, get your act together.

@Mike, I definitely disagree … I don't think that this was as planned by any means … the profile has not been rolled out to any networks yet

Slightly off topic, but does it annoy anyone else that in even slightly wide resolutions, the content on the profile pages are not centred under the header menu?

@Ian, I just looked at the developer version, and the menu bar has been resized the the length of the content portion. It looks better that way, IMO.

It's really annoying that almost all facebook launches have/had a delay - e.g. weeks ago the chat and now the redesign and the start of the payment platform is postponed as well…

I have already tested the new profile thanks to firefox extension “boost for facebook”. And sincerely I think it is much worse than the present one. I know that they will launch the new one this week… it pisses me off !!

if they go for a staged opt in
there is 24hrs in a day so maybe have time windows when you can 'opt in' FB could opt for the top 23 countries/ markets then the 24th hour could be all other markets.
this could also be done on surname basis A-W then X,Y Z the last hour.
but if there ever did the annoying fb network 'favoritism' they did with FB Chat i be very annoyed, Harvard University does not deserve it more than the Zimbabwe or any other network!

What's wrong with Harvard et al. going first? After all, FB started at Harvard and other elite universities.
In fact, I'm kind of mad they opened up FB to high schoolers and the general public. It's gone downhill since then. All sorts of spam and fake profiles. All these sorts of people already had Myspace.
I understand there's money to be made off of these people, but why base your business on all sorts of fickle people that will move on to the next thing first chance they get. It was far more valuable to have the captivation and interest of just the elite college students. Imagine going up to advertisers and saying we've got the next generation of doctors, lawyers and captains of industry checking our website compulsively. Want a piece of that action?
Silly move FB.
