New Facebook Design Launch is Slow and Steady

According to Facebook, only 5 percent of users have been granted access to the new profile design. This is taking place while Facebook works through it’s bugs and responds to user feedback. It is clear that everything isn’t completely ready for prime-time yet. Personally, I have been having browser issues with my chat not displaying and there have been little glitches hear and there. It’s smart that Facebook didn’t roll it out for everyone overnight as all the bugs probably would have created a serious backlash.

This also means that there is still potential for user revolt due to the new design. Facebook users tend to be highly reactive to significant changes and the new design will most likely not be an exception. The only reason that no major backlash has occurred yet is that the new design hasn’t been rolled out to the majority of users. There is no word on when Facebook will finish rolling out the profile to users but at least one person that I’ve spoken with said it will at least be a few weeks before it is completely rolled out.

It’s clear that the new design has an emphasis on improving the overall user experience. Whether or not users think it actually does has yet to be seen. Do you have access to the new Facebook design? Would you describe your experience as positive?

Not really, no. Although it has a few things that are better, overall it’s definitely NOT a better user experience.

It took a couple days to get used to, but surfing goes much more quickly now. Peoples’ profiles pages load much faster without 10 application boxes that have to appear before I can write on their wall.

I’m guessing everyone will hate it for about a week, since its *change* and most Facebookers seems to hate that. But, I doubt we’ll see any substantial migration.

I currently consider the switch a net negative.

(1) The two oldest postings on my old Wall do not appear on my new Wall.
(2) iLike appears in the left-hand column on my Wall and Info tabs, but I don’t know why.
[I have since changed it so that iLike only appears in my Boxes tab, but I still don't know why some apps can appear in my Wall and Info tabs and others can not.]
(3) I can’t control which photo album contents are displayed in the Wall entry.
(4) I can’t collapse applications.
(5) When I add a Wall posting, it is initially displayed under the wrong date heading.
[This might have been fixed.]
(6) After editing a note, the links in the blue bar no longer work.
[This might have been fixed.]
(7) The timestamps on Wall postings are in the wrong time zone (Azores!).
[This was fixed, except that comments on my Wall appear to be in Pacific time, whereas my posts appear in Eastern time.]
(8) I’d like the ability to add a comment to ANY Wall item, which should also be optionally added as a comment in the publishing application.
(9) I don’t think it’s a very good idea for my friends’ comments (e.g., attached to my status updates) to appear in the news feeds of my friends. I don’t see any option to control that.
(10) News Feed items can be grossly out of order, making it very easy to miss new items.
(11) When you navigate to a profile from the “Recently Updated” friends view, the updated items are no longer highlighted.
(12) There is no visual cue that applications in the Boxes tab can be reordered (via drag and drop).
(13) The Notes Settings box on my Notes page says “Only people tagged in my notes and I can see my notes” even though the Privacy page says “Who can see your Notes? Only Friends.”
(14) The Friends and Inbox buttons in the blue bar should be drop-down menus, like they used to be.
(15) I still prefer having separate Mini-Feed and Wall, both visible simultaneously.

I’m absolutely LOVING the new FB experience… I love every little bit about it, from the way it looks, to the way it interacts, to the way you dont load a million different apps every time you wanna see what someone got on their wall…

I havent had any visual issues with the new layout since they started rolling it out (there were some issues before the official rollout, but that doesnt count), but you can tell its not a finished product and that theyre building and fixing it in-flight… currently the most annoying for me is the “public” link for photo galleries and individual photos… it doesnt work for people who arent logged in / dont have a facebook account… but if you drop the “new.” from the URL, it works (in the old layout)… but i’m sure its just a matter of days before they fix it

I enjoy the new design. Like you said, it’s a bit buggy and that’s been irritating, but I like the direction they’re going in, even if the implementation hasn’t been perfect in the early stages.

There are a few little things that I don’t like, especially the fact that it takes more clicks/time to access the Recently Added Friends page, as there used to be a link to it in the Friends pull-down. But the combination of the Mini-Feed and Wall was a great idea, especially as Facebook attempts to compete with FriendFeed.

I’ve been using for 2 weeks now, at the beginning thanks to a Firefox extension (Boost for Facebook) and I think the former profile layout was much better for many reasons.

I prefer the new design, it is cleaner, less cluttered & nicer to the eye. It does still have a few bugs such as being able to add new application tabs although this is meant to be easy as clicking a button it doesn’t work.
Navigating the menus & tabs is easy & logical & although I’m sure many will complain once they get used to it I think they’ll find it easier.

Much better. I was sick of seeing everyone’s spamy apps. Now those are out of the way, unless YOU want to see them.

The new design is horrible!!!!

Not sure if this was already reported, but anyone who now wants to opt-in to start using the redesign can do so by visiting new.facebook.com! There is an option to opt-out back to the old design just in case if it too buggy for your use.

I enjoy the new facebook very much and havn’t had a lot of problems. For a week now, all the problems after 14 July is now fixed.

I’d say it’s much better. Much more streamlined and useful. Everything feels like it works together now and seems like one Facebook, rather than there being a bunch of pages that loosely correlated.

i love. faster. cleaner. better.

Yeah, like Revanth Says, anyone can test out the new version by going to new.facebook.com. I did for a couple minutes but I still don’t have anything to do there. Facebook isn’t doing anything new here; Last.fm, deviantArt, and others have all been running out betas before they release to everybody.

I’m finding it actually MUCH more busy to look at. I have several friends on myspace who are not on facebook, claiming “it’s too confusing”. I honestly don’t think this redesign is going to help that in the least; I think it’s only going to make it MORE confusing.

And today I noticed that the minifeed now ALWAYS shows timestamps! I had very intentionally unchecked that option in privacy settings; I don’t want people knowing the exact times I do things. Come on. But there’s no longer an option to turn that off!! VERY NOT GOOD

The new wall functionality is beat, and so is the way that some app-oriented profile content gets the shaft. I am really not a fan. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

it’s alright. it’s not horrible, and it isn’t fantastic either. though i have to admit, having used it for a few days, i am starting to like it better since it’s more…….organized.

i did a quick poll of my friends, and everyone who i asked has access to the new site. the link you quoted is a bit ambiguous - it seems to indicate that up to 5% of users will be using it - perhaps that not how many people will have access, but how many have switched?

I didn’t have any problems opening new facebook but the design it a lot more confusing and cluttered. It’s a really poor design.

This is much better. The design is more modern and neat. The features are great - getting better and always improving.

The problem with the public, the problem with people who don’t “develop” anything, is they expect things to work - even in BETA tests. It’s ridiculous. Things won’t work in the BETA, but you knew that before you started using it.

It’s good when people find bugs and report them in a nice manner. It’s annoying when people MOAN about it.

I love the new FB, I think it’s very much providing what we expect from Facebook - a modern, more mature social networking website.

I do ask people though, that are constantly moaning about issues, stop MOANING about them and SUGGEST that they are changed. It’s a test, no-one forced you to “test” this development.

I’ve just read some comments about people finding the new site ‘confusing’ - if you find Facebook confusing, then you must struggle to spell your own name. It’s got everything CLEARLY marked, labelled and it pretty much spells it out for you, throughout the site.

@Joe:

The reason why some apps can’t be placed in the “Wall” or “Info” tabs is because the application developer hasn’t updated thier app to take advantage of this new feature yet.

It isn’t Facebook’s fault, it is the app developer’s…

I LOVE the new profiles, although there does need to be some UI tweaks to make it look a lil bit better & less cluttered with the ads down the right hand side.

Any current (as of August 07 2008) stats on what percentage of the population are now using FB 2.0?

In Canada we get the option of choosing between the two.

Any Application developers going crazy over the FB update?!?

We are in the midst of launching 2 new Apps and are having a lot of trouble. Why would FB launch without the proper documentation and support for developers?

HORRIBLE! I want my WALL back!!

HORRIBLE! I want my WALL back!!

It seems that, as we draw closer to the new design being forced on us, things are getting a little unstable: comments don't show up immediately, pages take longer to load, clicking on “preview” for a note instead takes one to the news-feed, etc…

I'd say I'll be happy when things settle down, but then we'll be stuck with the new design, which I really don't like. It adds more mouse movements to finding someone's information at a glance, and it looks really clunky, with stuff somewhat haphazardly placed on the page. The only thing I'd want on a separate page would be, maybe, application boxes…
