Breaking: Facebook Releases New Design
Posted by Nick O'Neill on July 20th, 2008 10:13 PMFacebook has been testing out the new profile design for the past five months but for the first time ever, they have released the new full site design (pictured below). You can access the new site by visiting www.new.facebook.com.
New Homepage
The first noticeable change is a complete removal of the left-hand sidebar. Instead all of the links have been moved to a wider sidebar on the right hand side which appears to be double the size of the original. The applications have been moved to two different locations in the header and to the right hand sidebar.

New Applications Dropdown
There is a new drop-down menu in which users can view all of their applications. It’s not that great though if you have hundreds of applications installed as it takes a fair amount of time to browse through the applications (see the video below).
New Publisher Links
The top of the newsfeed now displays links to the publisher box on the new profile. This enables quick access for posting new notes, new photos, new videos and sharing links with your friends.

Bookmarks in Sidebar
As mentioned above, Facebook has moved the application links to two places: the navigation bar and the sidebar. The sidebar version shows only 8 applications but by clicking “See All” expands to show other applications. For some reason not all my applications are displayed in these links. For instance my “Mouse Hunt” link is no longer present. Additionally, it doesn’t appear that these links show up as the default links you initially had under the old design.
Removal of Social Ads?
Facebook used to display SocialAds flyers but apparently those are no longer displayed. I’m not sure if this is a fluke or a strategic decision by Facebook. Facebook will be announcing new initiatives on Wednesday and perhaps some of these initiatives are expected to remove this one. My guess is that this is a temporary removal as it doesn’t make much sense to completely remove SocialAds flyers. That also means that all ad campaigns that were running will not currently display on the new homepage or new profile.
Honestly this doesn’t make much sense and I’m guessing that Facebook may have instead chosen to redesign SocialAds. I have reached out to Facebook and am waiting for them to respond at this point.
New Friends Page
There is now a new friends page. While it is not substantially different the friend lists have been moved from the right hand side to the left hand side. The width has also been expanded to accommodate the new site design.

Design Feedback Form
Facebook has also included a form for users to provide feedback about each page’s new design. They have also emphasized that this feedback is expected to be positive and courteous as I’m sure they expect some negative feedback about the new design. On every page you can simply click “Send Feedback about this Page” directly above the navigation bar. Over the coming month, Facebook will be making updates to make sure that the new design provides a good user experience.

Conclusion
The new site design is much cleaner and simplified a lot of the features on the site. The fact that one of my applications didn’t display on the homepage leads me to believe that there are still bugs on the new design. Facebook is expected to announce the new design to users over the coming days at which point applications will begin noticing new users interfacing in new ways. The true test will be whether or not applications experience a reduction in growth rate. We will have to wait and see!

No Social Ads on the home page. Just the ones in the News feed? Bizzare (logout) link at top of home page…

link doesn’t work

I like it a lot so far! There are def a hand full off bugs and oops.

Say goodbye to apps - there is no viral spread any longer. It is a bit of a “Thanks for coming out!” on the part of FB. They have the user base and not about funwalls and scrabulous - now it is all about friends news feeds. I think it is great for users and the grim reaper for app developers.

It’s not loading for me — redirects me to the standard http://www.facebook.com site. Which .. itself seems to be loading only 10% of the time at the moment, alternatively giving me a “connection reset” or just an empty page.

A bunch of apps have this message:
Please go back to the using old Facebook profile for now. Facebook has not given developers enough time to modify apps for this new profile so they will all be broken for a week or two.
Apparently a bunch of developers got together to coordinate this message. LULZ.

Looks like HTTPS is now being used for account editing pages and the like. Try to navigate to the following URL, and you get redirected:
http://register.new.facebook.com/editaccount.php

Yeah! GREAT NEW site! Apparently, my QuadCore IE7 Vista System is not comptible and needs to be “upgraded”.
=============
You are using an incompatible web browser.
We detect that you’re using an old version Internet Explorer that doesn’t work very well with Facebook..
To get the most out of Facebook, please upgrade or download one of the following browsers:
Note: The beta site is currently disabled in IE6 because it’s all messed up and broken. Don’t worry, we’ll have it working IE6 soon.
Mozilla Firefox
Opera
Safari
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Flock

Apparently visiting this release of http://www.new.facebook.com is considered your “opt-in” because now when I visit the normal facebook, I get redirected to the new one.
July 20th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
The new home page is much better suited for advertising.
1) Facebook can now include the popular 300×250 ad unit… Before this FB could only use the odd 120×600.
2) FB’s ad strategy are ads within the news feed. The wider and more focused view on the news feed should help their inline advertising campaigns.
(who is FB’s competition in advertising that everyone except FB is overlooking? FriendFeed)
Overall impression - Congrats, the new home page is a much better design for the Facebook advertising team. We should see revenues jump considerably.

Wow!! Removal of Social Ads? That’s odd - surely they’re showing up elsewhere as so many members have ongoing campaigns running. There’s going to be a bunch of disgruntled peeps unless FB has something up their sleeve.
Hm, I’m in the San Diego Network and don’t see the new design just yet… probably another day or two. And that new.facebook.com link doesn’t work for me either - defaults to reg. site.
Cheers,
Mari

I liked your concern for social ads. But they are keeping space on rightside of the profile, where they will likely to put ads, social or otherwise.

I always love the neatness and style of facebook designers, and now they definitely revamped the look to something more modern. The app menu is so cool, looks like windows start menu. Amazing web programming all around.
I noticed a few small features missing:
- No wall post count
- Can’t browse by clicking Birthdays or Networks anymore
- Can’t filter activity anymore, and perhaps RSS are gone?
I’ll miss all those things and having everything on the same page (with the exception of people with too many apps).

Social Ads are not gone. Anyone with a Social Ad account got an email this morning with the details on the changes to Social Ads.
There will be two social ads on the right side of the profile pages, selected placement of one social ad on the home page.
Those with access right now can already see the ads.

I’m seeing Social Ads on mine. They’re on the right instead of the left.

Totally ridiculous to not let you go back to the standard version when their system “has detected” that I am using an old version of IE - when I have just done a full system upgrade!! Maybe this is just a ploy to get people off of IE and onto some other browser. I’m not keen to junk my system up with yet another browser. Even deleting history etc doesn’t let you go back to the old version - probably a registry setting but I don’t have time to find it. Facebook are not doing themselves any favours on this one!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the office we are forced to use IE6. We aren’t allowed to download and use any other browsers. As of this morning I can no longer log-on to Facebook using IE6. From home, using Firefox, it’s not problem. Is there any way to get back to the old Facebook? It automatically sends me to the new one when I try to log on.

Okay, I have /three/ web browsers and I tried to get to my facebook one each one. And /all/ of them keep saying something to the effect-
Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://www.facebook.com/home.php”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.
I just want on Facebook. I didn’t know that added this new facebook would make that impossible. So at this time, I am trying repeatedly to get to it and across the browser it flickers from trying to connect from http://www.facebook.com and http://www.new.facebook.com and ends with it saying it can’t re-direct properly.
HELP! I JUST WANT ON FACEBOOK!

I like the idea of tabs & the better organization available for folks with lots of apps & info but new design won’t let me display all my beloved applications in left bar OR move them somewhere else as in past. I kinda miss the whole lot that was me (& others) being on one page–I edited as necessary. Best part of Facebook for me was seeing a snapshot of who someone was instantly. Yes, I can definitely see where re-design will help keep new ad dollars following in–I just hope I’ll be checking in as often to view. I’ve re-verted to old FB interface for now…

The new design is completely unnecessary. Just keep it simple and keep the old design. Spend more time fixing the facebook chat because that is a whole bag of mess.

If you’ve got the new facebook. You can go back. there should be a bar on the top of the facebook screen. and on the the upper right hand corner, it should have a link for if you want to go to the old facebook. I’d say. If you hate it, like I do, click on it.

I just have to say that the NEW FACEBOOK is not very user friendly. They changed everything.
Rule: If its not broken why fix it. FB should just improve on what the users recommend. Changing the whole design & flow of thins just serves to disrupt whatever people already know. People have already gotten so used to the OLD FB interface. They know where everything is. And them boom, they changed it all. I can’t even find the basic EDIT PROFILE link when i logged in??? Hmmm, why do all the social sites like to revamp their interface. Revamp design is ok, revamp interface?? its like changing your already successful strategy.
Its better to value add & keep value add, not change & be something new???
I am a Web Strategist, looking frm a strategy point of view, FB users are increasing rapidly, there is no need to change. Unless ur users r declining, like what friendster did. Friendster changed in the direction of FB to add newsfeed functionality etc & now they are slowoly getting back more users. But FB now, this change? for what purpose?

Well for those who have not gotten the chance to view the new facebook. Don’t, there’s no need to, its ugly. Stick to the old user friendly & tested interface.

New Facebook is better than the old Facebook.
Though some important features in old Facebbok is not in the new one.
It take some time to get used to it.
“Kotu Wechcha”, compartmentalized, insode-cage people do not like the new design!

I deleted my Myspace account because I hated it’s complexity, I love Facebook’s simplicity and it meets all of my socializing capabilities…however…the new facebook is just chaotic. People enjoy simplicity these days, if you’re going to force people to use the “new” yet “not improved” Facebook, then at least always give them the option to continue using the old facebook for as long as they want and make sure it’s still in working condition.
P.S. I completely agree with Jeff (#47), Facebook isn’t broken…but the chat needs some major reworking.

Sharper text needed, enlarge font, style o.k. Brief sentences invite curiosity. Go people.

I hate the new facebook! I don't know what's “simpler” about it. I want the old one back. I don't understand why users don't at least have the choice of which facebook they'd like to use. I garuntee I won't be using it nearly as much, and I know others feel the same.
September 18th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
I it; I can't find anything, and it won't let me revert back to the older one.
