Facebook Raises Group Messaging Limit to 5,000

Facebook had previously limited group messages to groups with no more than 1,500 members. As of last week that limit was raised to 5,000 according to an article published today in the New York Times. Facebook had previously stated that they would be completely removing group messaging limits but for now it appears that they won’t go all the way.

This definitely doesn’t help much for those groups that have hundreds of thousands of users. Facebook is making slow adjustments though due to previous abuses by a select group of users that were using groups for spamming purposes. While there remains to be discrete ways to spam users, Facebook has been extremely effective at combating spam, a problem that severely impacted MySpace. Recently, MySpace has been on a streak against spammers winning two law suits, including a $234 million judgment back in May.

This little update by Facebook went unnoticed by most users since most groups are far below 5,000 users. The number 5,000 is an important one for Facebook. Currently users are limited to 5,000 friends. It’s an issue that a small number of users have been complaining about and Facebook has claimed has been a technical limitation. There is no word on if this number will be removed anytime soon aside from unsubstantiated rumors.

stuff that likely will be large - electoral, facebook/ social networking topics or online protests, other common protests (UK fuel), ISP Phorm, UK Speed (broadband speed) amongst others like Get rid of … Mugabe/ bush/ Blair/ labour (UK Party)/ Republican Administration/government, introduce… colour/backgrounds/ music (to facebook), remove xyz feature etc petition. However if they are not likely the above groups then likely the ‘make me popular’ or ’seaweed eaters in Antarctica’ - should not be given the unlimited or high privileges along with get as many as possible in here groups

I think that the group message restriction has been very relevant to people that do political organizing on Facebook. Coming from the background of online organizing for youth political groups, there are groups that have more than 1,000 members (especially national orgs) that will benefit from the increase.

Since Facebook groups are opt-in and very easy to leave, I don't really see there being too much of a problem with potential spam. If people begin to get unwanted messages from a group they have joined they will leave. The limit, however, prevents people that have opted-in to receiving communications from an organization from getting messages, which definitely decreases the efficacy of the Facebook group for organizing. A group with 999 people was more valuable in reality than one with 1,000 or more.

It's good to see that the number has been increased and more organizations will be able to take advantage of all the value of a Facebook group.

Finally a break to people who have large groups! This is the best news for the day! Woo Hoo!

I have a successful Real Estate group with over 10,000 members. I cannot effectually communicate with my members.

So my only solution is to cap it off at 10,000 and start new off spring groups, capping them off at 5,000 a pice.

Question:

Are there any known restrictions on creating two or three groups with the same content in the same category?

These message limits are completely ridiculous. If people don’t want to receive messages from a group, they are welcome to leave it. There, problem solved!
