That's a choice you made, and that's all that Facebook provides. I choose to only accept friend requests from people who are actually my friends (or at the very least, acquaintances) in real life. You've chosen to include a much broader group.

"Suddenly Facebook has become a conduit for spreading capitalist ideology"

We can only hope so. If it is, it will serve as a monumental achievement. It will lift millions out of poverty, bring freedom and choice to billions, and improve the quality of life for all of us.

Spread-on Facebook...

It's not very stupid. It's a good discussion to have: if Facebook has the potential to match the hype, then it can be as detrimental as it could be positive. My take, however, is that Facebook is much more limited in its potential than everyone makes it out to be. Facebook communication is not the same as real world communication. It is low fidelity, degraded, and cheap. My friends on Facebook are not my real friends, and my messages on Facebook will never be as valuable to me as a telephone call, or a real birthday card. If Facebook truly 'enhances' human relationships, then I should have more and better friends the more I use Facebook. I think it's actually the opposite.

It's very, very stupid.

Facebook is not selling us human relationships, it is GIVING us a tool to enhance them, paid for by sponsors.

How about Air Lines that fly us to see our loved ones. Are they selling us our family?

How about the food store that sells us the food we need to eat to survive. Are they selling us our own lives?

Everything is a commodity. Such is capitalism. Take it or leave it, Hodgkinson.
