Are Social Networks Getting Boring?

Peter Kafka has pointed out some pretty depressing numbers about user engagement on social networks across the board. Kafka’s post was based on another post by Business Week’s Spencer Ante who has an early look at the Comscore numbers. While Facebook had fantastic growth in their overall user base, the total amount of time spent on the site decreased month-to-month.

One of the big reasons why I’ve stopped spending as much time on Facebook is applications have ruined the clean interface of the site and slowed things down considerably. It would be in Facebook’s best interest to offer a default lightweight view with no custom third-party applications. If that is too much to ask then they should track the performance index of the third-party application servers. If it falls below a threshold then the application box should be not displayed on the user profile. In the end I don’t care how its done but Facebook needs to take action.

I think if you wanna figure out how to make the best and most engaging social network you have to read all of the latest thing on social objects and object-centered sociality.

The reason why its a failure is because theres nothing to do on it. Once you found/spied on your old friends, played a pointless round of scrabble and join some pointless inactive group that you dont even engage with any way, what else is there to do on facebook? The answer…nothing. For me the only good thing to come out of facebook…is that I now know only your family stands the test of time. friendship and networking has no substance.
