Project Management Comes to Facebook

Yesterday I suggested that Facebook is for fun and the odds of people using the site for productivity purposes are slim to none. While I still think that’s the case, Divshare has launched a pretty sweet project management application. The AllFacebook writer, Rory Marinich set up a sample project for me and it seems fairly similar to Basecamp sans the design. You can upload any type of file to your project and the application automatically detects the format.

For each project there is also a wall where you can post notes. The only thing that appears to be missing is any sort of scheduling feature (deadlines, etc). It would be nice to know what the deadlines are for a project. This application definitely accopmlishes what is required for smaller projects. Given that students are the largest U.S. demographic on Facebook, this would be an awesome tool for school projects.

While I’m skeptical about the future success of this application, it is well designed and has a good shot at getting at least a few users. DivShare previously launched the DivShare Facebook application and it had relatively poor results. The application currently only has 38 daily users. If you are looking for a project management tool on Facebook though, you should check out the DivShare Projects application.

The idea is neat, cause thousands of people use Facebook. But, well… it’s not a real PM application, is it? It just doesn’t have the right features, so it can be used for real project management. This app may be nice to play around with, but nothing more. In my opinion project teams will still continue to use tools like Wrike.com http://www.wrike.com/. They have graphics (like Gantt charts), tasks scheduling features (like due dates) and lot of other necessary functions that actually help to collaborate and complete a project.

[…] Another great application has been launched on Facebook. The College Planner application that was just launched by Embark enables high school students to apply to colleges directly on the site. In addition to applying, you can find out what schools your friends are interested in as well. Best of all, it is completely free to use. Recently, there have been a number of useful applications, including the Projects application which I reviewed yesterday. […]

No real need to download an app like this for a school project–you can just make a group. I could do a project in “I HATE When Kids Suck At Putting Together the Shrine of the Silver Monkey” (my favorite fb group) just as easily as I could using DivShare. The discussions, posted items, the wall, etc. that every group comes with are plenty.

Although I am a fan of Facebook and also a fan of project management software I feel that the combination of the two may not be the best partnership. I personally use Communiclique’s collaboration software and am extremely pleased with the results. However, I feel that PM software should strictly stay PM software and not integrate into anything else. To me Facebook mixing with PM software is like mixing work and play and we all know how that works out.
