This morning I wrote about OpenSocial in fact being a coalition of the willing based on Hitwise statistics. According to Silicon Alley Insider that’s all about to change today. Apparently MySpace, the social networking behemoth, is preparing to join OpenSocial. That may just be OpenSocial’s tipping point.
If Google is able to convince MySpace to join the alliance, they may in fact be able to take on Facebook. Without MySpace I still believe that they are a loosely joined alliance among social networks that are not currently leaders within the United States. The significance of any partnership with MySpace is huge! Ultimately, Google may have just pulled yet another successful PR campaign by doubling up big news one day after the other. Recently, Facebook has been the talk of the town (and may continue to be) but any alliance that includes MySpace is a powerful one.
I’ll be publishing more information as I hear more.
Update
According to Techcrunch SixApart has decided to join the pact. This is massive. As Mike Arrington said, “within just the last couple of days, the entire social networking world has announced that they are ganging up to take on Facebook, and Google is their Quarterback in the big game.”

Mark Zuckerberg is too busy counting his $240M to care much about OpenSocial right now, and what do you think of my new domain name?!

Launched on time, as advertised and w/ a reach of 200m users vs FB 50m. I wonder how Microsoft and FB feel right about now?

Facebook and Microsoft will be sniggering uncontrollably, all the competition tied up in a madcap venture to to unify the world of social networking with a bit JavaScript sticking plaster.
