Facebook Is Being Blocked at Work

In a random sample of individuals who work at companies that block access to certain websites, 50 percent have been blocked from MySpace or Facebook. If this number is statistically relevant, 35 percent of all companies block access to Facebook or MySpace. While this may just be another security company looking for quick and easy press (I won’t be mentioning that company in this article), it does bring to light an important issue: should Facebook be blocked at work?

For myself, the combination of a blog, email and Facebook messages has been overwhelming. It it were for productivity purposes, removing Facebook would actually be a great option. The only problem is that if I remove Facebook from the equation, that means that I also have to remove this blog given that Facebook is what I write about. I am extreme case though and have to wonder whether or not other individuals are spending a significant amount of time on Facebook while at work. Do you spend a ton of time on Facebook while at work?

I would have to imagine that if a significant number of people are spending time on Facebook while at work, productivity worldwide must be decreasing dramatically. Honestly, I’m not sure how the Facebook team can finish a project without browsing around to see what their friends are up to. It’s pretty impressive that they keep rolling out new products given the ability of their product to suck users in for hours. Given that Facebook is an addictive product, do you think employees should be able to use it while at work?

i check my FB a few times a day but i dont really waste heaps of time on it. its like an extension of checking personal email - seeing if there is anything exciting going on in my personal life. there was that case of that dude who got busted spending 4hrs a day on FB while at work … nevertheless i dont think it should be banned. these analyses of “facebook costs business X million USD per year” are pointless
