Myspace Launching Competing Platform

Mike Arrington is reporting that Myspace’s new platform is set to launch next week at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco. I had the opportunity to speak with a number of developers while in the valley over the past week. Most said that they would be working feverishly to launch their applications on Myspace as soon as the platform launches.

While a massive opportunity, many have downplayed the rumored Myspace platform as a smaller opportunity given their lack of a newsfeed. Even without a newsfeed, the launch of the Myspace platform will surely be a large event. Marshall Kirkpatrick has pointed out that this is going to mean a serious increase in spam if Myspace’s application notifications resemble Facebook’s in any way.

According to Mike, the new Myspace platform is going to provide hosting for developers. This is a major shift in “social platforms.” One of the largest issues when the Facebook platform launched was hosting for developers trying to absorb the massive exponential growth experienced at launch. Many of the new developers on the Facebook platform have not been experiencing similar adoption patterns.

A little over a week ago, I questioned whether or not developers will go running for the door when the Myspace platform launches. We are about to see. Developers already constrained by lack of resources are going to be strained even harder as they start to develop on multiple social platforms.
