Google Attempts to Conquer Facebook, Not!
Posted by Nick O'Neill on October 16th, 2007 11:30 AMYesterday, Eric Eldon posted an article about Google recruiting third party application developers for running adsense. I’m not quite sure that this is a huge surprise. Any web based advertising company is going to fight to get a piece of the top applications on Facebook. When you have hundreds of thousands of daily visitors to your application, every web advertiser is going to be fighting for a piece of your real estate.
Early yesterday morning I received an email from one of my readers highlighting these Google ads but I thought nothing of it. Eric has said that Google is “specifically building this network for advertisers who want to be on Facebook, and will let advertisers run their ads across all Facebook apps that sign up for it.” Is this a separate network? That’s what Eric makes it sound like but that doesn’t make much sense to me. If Google is actively recruiting these developers, look for them to acquire one of the large players that have piggybacked on the success of Facebook.
Since they are most likely not going to acquire Facebook at this point, Google will be forced to try and attain as much information as possible from whomever the largest third party is in this space. While this is all theory at this point, it is a logical business decision. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out over the coming months. Do you think Google will buy one of the larger players like Slide or RockYou?
