Facebook Secretly Reveals Demographic Data

One of my readers pointed out to me a new feature on the Flyers Pro that enables you to view demographic data within Facebook. Currently, there is almost 20 million people in the United States that are on Facebook. Just over 8 million have specified that they are male and almost 10 million have specified that they are female. Not bad odds for a guy on Facebook!

Almost half of the entire population on Facebook have specified that they are single. There are almost 1 million users that are between the ages of 35 and 60 in the United States, whereas the same age bracket in Canada accounts for over 1.5 million users. The vast majority of Facebook users are still in the 18 to 35 age bracket. Chris Kennedy, an employee of Rock the Vote, pointed out to me that “at Rock the Vote, for example, we can now track the number of 18-29 year-olds in the US who identify as liberal or conservative and monitor changes over time that may indicate a shift in the political identity of young Americans.”

While there is still a bias within this data, the information is good for generating rough estimates about users on Facebook. In terms of demographic data, the information is definitely a little skewed though. For instance, less than a third of users on Facebook appear to put their political leanings. 75 percent of people are comfortable enough to put their relationships status. Another useful tool is the ability to browse the number of individuals on Facebook based on company and even the demographics of users within that organization on Facebook.

You can also view how many people on Facebook have listed a specific keyword within their profile. For example, there are 445,520 people in the United States that listed “Pulp Fiction” as one of their favorite movies. This new Flyers feature is definitely cool for finding out interesting demographic data on Facebook. If you want to view more information about Facebook’s demographics, you can go play with the Flyers Pro page.

[…] 1. Think about your target demographic. Although many consumer internet entrepreneurs advise not to bury yourself in the target audience analysis prior to product lunch, it’s highly highly helpful to hypothesize who would be using your product. If you’re building an application popular among older users (e.g., Bingo), chances are Facebook is not your ideal launch platform. Just look at the stats for bingo.com. If, on the other hand, you’re designing a poke-like game for teenagers and young adults, Facebook may be a great place to start.
