The Wild West of Advertising

Want to advertise your Facebook application? There are a lot of options out there. One thing is for certain: you can spend a lot of money just with adding application users. The only issue though is figuring out how accurate that advertising is and whether or not you are getting what you paid for. Google for instance will ban you for encouraging users to click on your ads. Facebook advertisers seem to currently have nothing against this.

Have a good model for getting users to click your ads? Go for it! Nobody is stopping you, especially not the Facebook advertising platforms currently out there. You can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars advertising your application but most of the services provide un-targeted ads and there is no way of verifying that your ads were actually served. The bottom line is that there is nobody to monitor these new ad networks so many of them are now playing dirty. The ones that actually do verify their numbers and don’t encourage people to click your ads for the sake of clicking them will end up winning in the long run.

Have you seen any of these applications that are designed to leverage the unmonitored ad networks? What responsibility do you think these advertising providers have to their clients? Should they be checking each application to make sure that they don’t violate any terms of service?
